From the CEO: The Others

There is one thing all humans are good at; pointing out other's perceived deficiencies, all the while thinking oneself infallible and above reproach. The rationale is that it is far better to bend the will of others than to reflect upon oneself and change.
Corporations, at times, are no different than human beings in that regard. And ours is one. The Maricopa County Medical Society, along with every other medical association across this nation, has had tendencies to look upon the others - those who are not affiliated, or members - as the outcasts, the "wrong ones" because "they just don't get it or appreciate what we're doing, or are complacent and uncaring about the future of medicine."
Maybe there is room for self-reflection before pointing fingers. Let us look inward and determine what it is that would change that mindset and begin the catalyst or movement to foster collegiality and common purpose among physicians. Read More... |

ABMS to Make Physician Maintenance-of-Certification Status Public
| | In the last several years, medical specialty boards have implemented maintenance-of-certification requirements to provide ongoing education and assessment of physicians. Now the American Board of Medical Specialties plans to make information about whether individual physicians are meeting those requirements available to the public.
The move coincides with efforts to increase transparency across healthcare. But some physicians are waiting to see how clearly the ABMS presents the information for public consumption. Read More... |

Officials Hope to Stem Increase in Prescription Drug Overdoses
| | More Arizonans are dying from overdoses of prescription painkillers such as oxycodone and methadone, a problem the state's top health official blames in large part on people self-medicating.
"This is a public health issue that's getting worse, much worse," said Will Humble, Director of the Arizona Department of Health Services.
A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published earlier this month found that prescription painkillers contributed to 14,800 deaths nationally in 2008, representing about 74 percent of all prescription drug overdose deaths that year. Read More... |

Providing Prices isn't as Easy as it Sounds
| | A Federal report demonstrates what many have long known: Most physician offices are unable to provide an estimate of the amount of money a patient eventually will pay out of pocket before medical services are provided, making it nearly impossible for price to play a role in healthcare decisions.
"My first reaction is that I'm disappointed they spent all this money to do this report," said Yul Ejnes, MD, chair of the American College of Physicians Board of Regents. "They could have asked any physician."
This is in part because it is not always clear what patients need before they are seen, but there are aspects of the health system that complicate the issue even more. On Sept. 23, the Government Accountability Office released a report on healthcare pricing to the U.S. House, which issued it publicly on Oct. 24. Read More... |
