The Employment of Doctors by Hospitals - Indentured Servitude or Practice Salvation

Hospitals are showing renewed interest in employing physicians. They have moved down this path before. Many hospitals acquired physicians' practices in the early '90s and, after multimillion dollar losses, divested them before the end of the decade.
The earlier wave of physician employment was almost entirely focused on primary care physicians. And most of it was done for defensive reasons. Health systems felt that owning a network of primary care physicians would put them in a strong position for negotiating managed care contracts. It was an era in which the experts said the primary care gatekeeper at the high end of the food chain was the wave of the future. Of course, things didn't quite work out that way. Read More...

Healthcare Work Force Report Questions - How to Plan for the Future
| | Healthcare policymakers' ability to plan future work force needs is hindered by incomplete and inconsistent data on certain health professions, as well as a lack of training in new care delivery models, according to an analysis by a Washington think tank.
The Bipartisan Policy Center on Oct. 18 released a preliminary report, "The Complexities of National Health Care Workforce Planning," a review of existing work force employment and training.
The center, founded in 2007 by four former Senate majority leaders, plans to release a full version of the 28-page initial report in November. Read More... |

Medicare Part B 2012 Premiums Lower Than Projected
| | | The Obama administration announced that premiums for Medicare Part B coverage in 2012 will be $99.90 a month for most beneficiaries, a smaller-than-expected increase over the $96.40 paid this year by a majority of elderly and disabled beneficiaries. Part B pays for physician visits, hospital outpatient costs and certain other services. A 3.6 percent Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, the first in three years, will more than make up for the small increase, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Healthcare Reform Review Decision could come on Nov. 10
| | The Supreme Court could decide Nov. 10 whether it will review President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law this term.
The Obama administration and five opponents of the law are asking the court to review whether the law's requirement that all Americans buy insurance is constitutional. Five of the six pending requests have been sent to the justices ahead of the November conference, at which the justices will decide which cases it will accept.
Petitions from the Obama administration and several opponents of the law - including 26 states, the National Federation of Independent Business, Liberty University and the Thomas More Law Center - will be under consideration.
Virginia has also asked the court to accept its case, but the Justice Department has not yet responded. Virginia's petition was not circulated Wednesday.
The court could decide at the Nov. 10 private conference if it wants to hear the issue and would likely announce it on Nov. 14 - or could defer a decision until a later conference. Read More... |

Harvard Study Highlights Wide Range Of Medicaid Expansion Estimates
|
| If one thing is certain about the 2010 health law, it's that almost nothing about it is certain. And according to a newly released report, one of the major unknowns involves the law's expansion of Medicaid, the federal-state health insurance program for the poor.
In a Health Affairs article released October 26, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health say the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) could add between 8.5 million and 22.4 million people to the rolls by 2019. It could also drive up annual federal spending on the program by anywhere from $34 billion to $98 billion.
Medicaid expansion begins in 2014, when the threshold for eligibility will be raised nationwide to 133 percent of the federal poverty level. Currently, eligibility varies widely among the states once certain federal minimums have been met. Read More... |
