Valley Fever Continuing Medical Education (CME) Courses

The morning event is a basic course providing an overview of treatment of Valley Fever designed for Primary Care Providers from 8 am - noon.
This course is free of charge and 3.25 CME credits are available.  

 

The afternoon course includes more advanced topics geared for specialists (but all are welcome to attend either or both sessions) and is from  1-4:30 pm.

The advanced topics course has a nominal $50 fee (waived for members of the VFAAC and students/
physicians in training) and has 3.0 CME credits available.

Over the next several days, the voting membership will receive their official ballot and proxy attestation for the 2012 Board Officers and Directors (in separate mailings).

Richard Heuser, MD to Present at the Annual American Heart Association's Scientific Session Meeting

On November 13, 2011, Richard R. Heuser, MD, FACC, FACP, FESC, FSCAI, Chief of Cardiology at St. Luke's Medical Center and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, will present at the American Heart Association's (AHA) yearly scientific session meeting in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Heuser has been honored to present yearly at the AHA meeting since the early '80s. He will be presenting a paper on the "Advanced Antegrade Approach to CTO's:  New Technique and Devices to Improve Success and Safety", for the treatment of chronically 100 percent occluded coronary arteries.  Read more... 

Medical Identity Theft a Growing Problem
One-third of healthcare organizations, including physician practices, insurers and pharmacies, have reported catching a patient using the identity of someone else to obtain services, according to a report from the professional services firm PwC.

The report, "Old Data Learns New Tricks," by PwC's Health Research Institute, said the problem - and consequences - of medical identity theft could get worse as electronic sharing of patient data increases. Physicians unwittingly could end up using information obtained during a visit with an identity thief in deciding how to treat a patient, for example.

Medical identity theft is still a small percentage of the total amount of identity theft that occurs, but it's the fastest-growing segment, said Jim Koenig, director and leader of PwC's identity theft practice. Read more...

Mayo Clinic Plans Medical School in Scottsdale
Mayo Clinic will join forces with Arizona State University to develop a new $266 million medical-school branch in Scottsdale that could begin teaching medical students by 2014.

The Rochester, Minn.-based medical school plans to add the facility, to be called the Mayo Medical School-Arizona campus, at Mayo's campus on Shea Boulevard east of Loop 101. Read more...
Make Sure You Know How to Meet Version 5010 Level II Compliance

The Version 5010 compliance deadline is less than 90 days away.

 

All entities covered under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) must be ready to implement the Version 5010 transaction standards by December 31, 2011. In order to meet this compliance deadline, you need to conduct both Level I Internal Testing, and Level II External Testing of transactions. Read more...
