His niece Christina Abrams continues to head the JDRF walk, as captain of the team, JACKIE'S JOGGERS, in honor of her grandmother, the late Jackie Pavese, and her uncle and godfather, the late Richard Pavese, MD on November 5, 2011 at Wet N Wild in Phoenix. Read more...

E-prescribing of Controlled Substances Now Possible with Application Approval

Controlled substances account for 11% of all prescriptions, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). For many physicians, maintaining two prescribing systems and workflows - a paper-based one for controlled substances and an electronic one for everything else - has been a significant obstacle to the broad adoption of e-prescriptions (eRx) and the rapid identification of prescription drug abusers who are stockpiling potentially addictive Schedule II drugs. The move follows a report from the House of Commons' Public Accounts Committee that said the network is "beyond the capacity of the Department of Health to deliver."

Study: U.S. Physicians Burdened by Insurance Costs

High Medical Spending Found in Unexpected Places

Quick: Where do insured Americans spend the most on healthcare? Miami? Los Angeles?

Nope. It's Anderson, Indiana, where people with employer-provided insurance spent an average of $7,231 on medical treatments. Anderson's spending level in 2009 was 76 percent above the national average of $4,104 per person, according to the analysis.  Lake Havasu City-Kingman, AZ was also in the top 10 highest metro areas. Read more...

State Doesn't Have to Pay for Additional AHCCCS Coverage

Arizona does not have to pay for additional Medicaid coverage voters approved back in 2000, a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge has ruled.

The ruling is likely to result in as many as 250,000 low-income childless adults losing health insurance provided by the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), the state's Medicaid program.

The case is the result of a suit brought by the Arizona Center for the Law in the Public Interest, which argued that the state has to honor Proposition 204, a voter initiative passed in 2000 to extend Medicaid coverage to all persons who live below the Federal poverty level. The reason is the 1998 Voter Protection Act - another voter-approved initative - that requires the Legislature from changing voter mandates. Read more...
