Educate Legislators on Impact of AHCCCS Cuts

AHCCCS, the state's Medicaid program, will have deep cuts if state legislators have their way.

The Arizona House, Senate and the Governor all have differing proposals, none of which include new revenue, and all incorporate large cuts. ArMA and a coalition of healthcare provider groups have tried continuously since January to make it clear these cuts will not only be devastating to our medically indigent, but to the stability of the entire healthcare infrastructure, and the overall economy of our state. Organized Medicine: Why it Matters - Part I

By: Nathan Laufer, MD

Nathan Laufer, MD

MCMS President

Lately, I have heard many questions about the value of organized medicine. Physicians are looking to limit their expenses and are trying to decide if they are getting their money's worth out of their memberships in local associations, such as, MCMS and ArMA.

I will try and answer their concerns in a two part series.

If we had several wishes for our medical practices these are probably what they would look like: We would like to continue to practice independently as small businesses, be fairly compensated for our work and years in school, have influence with legislators regarding healthcare issues, be in charge of quality of care issues, have tort reform, maintain patient choice regarding doctors and hospitals, get rid of health plan pre-authorizations and roadblocks to collections, and most importantly to be allowed to organize and do collective bargaining, if needed (Federal Trade antitrust exemption). Unfortunately, some of these wishes may never come about. However if we don't try to achieve some of these goals, we are guaranteed a 100% failure rate in implementing any of them! Read more...

Six Biggest Gripes of Physicians Employed by Hospitals

Victoria Rentel, a family physician in Columbus, Ohio, joined a hospital-owned group several years ago. At first, nearly everything went fine. There were a few glitches: she'd occasionally order tests or consults at competing facilities, either for patient convenience or because of health plan coverage. When the hospital's administrators found out, they told her it was a violation of her contract; but that didn't stop her because she knew the hospital never enforced this provision. Read more...
