This April 24-30, Arizona has the unique honor of being chosen as the launch state for this year's National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) campaign.
Each year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Border Health Commission spend the week in a border state highlighting the joint efforts of the United States and Mexico in their efforts to insure that infants are fully immunized against diseases. Their visit gives Arizona the opportunity to show our commitment to childrens health and wellness, innovative practices and strong partnerships.
The Arizona Department of Public Health is looking for your help and support in protecting our babies from pertussis (whooping cough) in Arizona.
Please consider getting involved. Any involvement may help Arizona infants and their families be better protected against this potentially deadly disease.
Visit WhyImmunize.org or call the Arizona Immunization Office at 602-364-3630 for more information. Read more...

Continuity of Care - Starts with Caring
By Nathan Laufer, MD
Before the turn of the century, most primary care doctors followed their own patients in the hospital when they became ill enough

to be admitted. Patients liked this; and there was good continuity of care since the doctor who knew the patient the best was the one taking care of him or her.
More recently, the hospitalist movement swept across the country and essentially ended all that. Now when patients enter the hospital, they usually have a different doctor, whom they don't know at all, talking to them about life threatening situations. The primary care physician whom the patient has come to trust over the years is nowhere to be found. The hospitalist must be able to overcome that barrier and win the patient's confidence and trust in a very short period of time. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. Read more...

The Business of Medicine
| | | Doctors' Distress:
MCMS member Dr. Robert Marotz attended a virtual briefing about a survey of physician attitudes in 11 countries, conducted by APCO Insight for Pfizer. It painted a chilling picture of the dissatisfaction in the U.S. and other countries where doctors feel they are losing their authority to make medical decisions to bureaucracies that dictate how they must practice:
- Nearly half of doctors surveyed in the U.S. and three-fourths of those in Germany believe the practice of medicine is going in a negative direction.
- Doctors, especially in the most developed countries, are most concerned about administrative burdens and outside interference in medical decisions.
- Large majorities of physicians in the U.S., Germany, and France believe that the condition of their health systems will be worse in the future.
- By a two-to-one margin, U.S. physicians rate the new health law as unfavorable (50%) vs. favorable (24%).
- Doctors in the U.S. were more likely than those in any other country to say they expect to leave medical practice sooner than they had originally planned.
- While doctors in most countries have a generally favorable view of clinical assessments of treatments and technologies, they want them to be voluntary. The survey found that 51% of physicians in the U.S. believe treatment guidelines that come from government or insurance companies have a negative impact on patient health.
The conclusion is clear that doctors want to spend more time with patients and not paperwork, and they want to treat patients according to their best medical judgment, not the dictates of outside payers.
