MCMS Encourages Members to Comment on Prop 203

At the January Maricopa County Medical Society Board meeting, discussions were held on the need to disseminate information about ADHS' call for public comments on Prop. 203 to the physicians of Maricopa County.

MCMS goal and mission is to get as many physicians involved in commenting (positive, helpful, constructive comments) to ensure the program is developed in accordance with the intent of the law, and to ensure that the physicians of the community get their voices heard.

This is an integral part of MCMS' new mission to be the "Voice of Medicine in Arizona" and physician participation is the key.
The first call for comments closed on January 7; however, there will be another ADHS comment period for  between January 31 through February 18, 2011.

To submit your comments and  obtain information about important upcoming dates; such as ADHS information regarding the process, http://www.azdhs.gov/prop203/calendar.htm or

MCMS Goes To Capitol - Results in Bill

The recent proposed changes to ARS 36-2602 (Controlled Substance Monitoring Program) by MCMS successfully resulted in an invitation to the Capitol to speak to representatives regarding the issue. The proposed change will include data from the Department of Health Services, which will indicate who possesses a medical marijuana identification card. Shortly thereafter, Representative Matt Heinz, introduced the bill (HB2585) on the floor of the House in early February.

The initiative was brought to the MCMS Board's attention by MCMS Secretary, Dr. Sue Sisley and within days of the January Board meeting, a response to Dr. Nathan Laufer's letter of support and proposed language was received.

"We are very excited about the quick response to our support of the proposed change. Representative Matt Heinz, also a physician, quickly recognized the importance of this change to ensure patient and physician safety. We are encouraged that this recent success will result in a more open communication between the legislators and the Medical Society," said Dan Mitten, Maricopa County Medical Society CEO.

Dan also stated that Dr. Laufer's leadership allowed for this change to happen and Dr. Sisley was a key factor and instrumental in getting this piece of legislation introduced.

The Medical Society is very appreciative and grateful to Representative Heinz who provided great insight into the process and supported the measure from the beginning.

MCMS will keep the membership posted on this legislative piece as it develops and is encouraged about future involvement with the State's Legislators. The Medical Society is closely monitoring the development of the medical marijuana program to ensure physicians and patients are protected and provided with the best care available in a safe, successful program.

MCMS Supports Restoration of Transplant Benefits

The Maricopa County Medical Society supports a recently submitted bill (SB1383) that will restore a list of transplants to the list of AHCCCS-covered services. The proposed bill allows funds in the Automobile Theft Authority Fund to be spent on organ transplants for AHCCCS patients.

Should this bill pass, $1.4 million from the ATA Fund in FY2011-2012 will go to AHCCCS for organ transplants.
