MCMS Encourages Members to Comment on Prop 203
At the January Maricopa County Medical Society Board meeting discussions were held on the need to disseminate the information about ADHS' call for public comments on Prop. 203 to the physicians of Maricopa County.

MCMS goal and mission is to get as many physicians involved in commenting (positive, helpful, constructive comments) to ensure the program is developed in accordance with the intent of the law, and to ensure that the physicians of the community get their voices heard.

This is an integral part of MCMS' new mission to be the "Voice of Medicine in Arizona" and physician participation is the key.
The first call for comments closed on January 7; however, there will be another ADHS comment period for  between January 31 through February 18, 2011.

To submit your comments and  obtain information about important upcoming dates; such as ADHS information regarding the process, http://www.azdhs.gov/prop203/calendar.htm or

The Hospital Review Process - Fair or Flawed?

The peer review process as practiced in most hospitals may be inherently biased. In my opinion, in its current state, peer review may allow for the worst-case scenario to occur with devastating consequences. In certain circumstances, this process can allow poorly qualified physicians to continue to practice and can penalize competent physicians who may have a rare complication. Read more...

The Time for Great Opportunities

The New Year has come upon us and our imagined future is the present. We begin 2011 with a myriad of healthcare related topics, issues, obstacles and opportunities. From every angle, medicine is inundated with challenges that seem overwhelming, problematic and just another nail in the coffin of organized medicine.

Perception is the key to overcoming the sense of dread and allowing these changing times to chip away at our armor and destroy our enthusiasm and positive approach to the future. Read more...

Update: MCMS Support of Amendment to ARS 36-2602
On January 25, MCMS CEO Daniel F. Mitten and MCMS Secretary Suzanne A. Sisley, MD visited State Representative Heinz at the State capital to discuss ARS 36-2602, which pertains to the controlled substances monitoring program; contracts; retention and maintenance of records. As a result Rep. Heinz is now in the process of introducing the following language to the current statute: "This database will include data from the Arizona Department of Health Services to identify those Arizona residents who possess a Medical Marijuana ID card."

The addition of this line is integral in the success of the medical marijuana dispensing program and will allow physicians to make informed and safe decisions regarding their recommendations for possession of medical marijuana and/or of the prescribing of other opiates. This monitoring is solely for the safety of the patient and their health.

The Maricopa County Medical Society Board of Directors voted unanimously to support this addition to the current statute at the January 2011 board meeting.
