Greetings!

I hope to see you all at our MCMS Annual Event - Tailgate Mania coming up this month. It will be fun to see the diversity of school colors worn by all, to eat delicious tailgating food and to spend time with friends and colleagues. The Society staff has worked diligently to put together a fun event.

I have asked our colleague, Dr. Bob England from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, to write a public health update for all of us. I have already started giving influenza vaccinations in my office and I am amazed that even though we gave almost 2,000 flu shots last year, some of my patients still harbor misconceptions about the flu vaccine. On a larger scale, patients don't always understand the burden of many vaccine preventable diseases, and we may be their only reliable medical teachers. Please don't forget any "teachable moments" available to all of you throughout the day. And lastly, get your vaccinations updated!

Have a healthy Fall, and I hope to see you all at the Tailgate Party!! Go (Bucks!) (Insert your team name here)
Are you ready for some Tailgating?

Banner Baywood names new CEO
There are changes at the top for Banner Baywood Medical Center with the retirement of CEO Don Evans.

Laura Robertson, currently CEO at Banner Heart Hospital, will take Evan's spot effective Jan. 1. At that time, Debbie Flores will move from her position as associate administrator at Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City to become CEO for Banner Heart Hospital.

"Don has had a long, distinguished career in health care and has devoted 22 years of dedicated service to Banner ... his many contributions have extended to improving the community as well, " said Becky Kuhn, president of Banner's Arizona East Region, in an email to employees.

Banner Baywood, opened in 1984 in Mesa, provides acute care services in its 342-bed hospital.
What do 50.7 million uninsured mean to physicians?
At many practices, the economy has forced doctors to make stark choices as their patients find it harder to pay for care.

As the number of uninsured Americans spiked in 2009, physicians began offering new payment options, networking with other doctors to boost referrals, and accepting more Medicaid and uninsured patients. Doctors say they're spending more time helping patients who can't afford prescriptions, tests and other needed care.

The uninsured population reached 50.7 million in 2009, according to Census Bureau estimates released Sept. 16 -- the largest number since 1987, when the Census began its current method of estimating the uninsured.

Computerized Physician Order Entry Nearly Hard-Stop Alert May Effectively Change Prescribing
An electronic nearly hard-stop alert as part of an inpatient computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system seemed to be extremely effective in changing prescribing but resulted in clinically important treatment delays in some patients, according to the results of a randomized controlled trial reported in today's issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"The effectiveness of [CPOE] systems has been modest, largely because clinicians frequently override electronic alerts," write Brian L. Strom, MD, MPH, from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and colleagues. "When soft order alerts appear on the computer screen, clinicians are alerted about potential problems associated with the particular prescription order and are presented with alternative treatments available for consideration. In contrast, when hard stop-order alerts appear on the screen, the clinician's order is blocked from further execution to avert potentially serious reactions."

Nurses, PAs, Physicians Share in Federal Grants to Enlarge Primary Care Workforce
The new health care reform law that will extend insurance coverage to millions of Americans also is attempting to expand the nation's primary care workforce with a major infusion of cash. Although physicians are the main beneficiaries, registered nurses and physician assistants (PAs) also stand to gain in significant ways.

US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius yesterday announced $320 million in grants under the Affordable Care Act to boost the number of primary care clinicians, and thus match medical supply to the intensified medical demand created by the law. Of the $320 million, $167.3 million will flow into residency programs in general pediatrics, general internal medicine, and family medicine during a 5-year period, with the goal of training 889 more primary care residents in 2015 than are trained now.
