Listen to your Patients
Patients are storytellers and the really great physicians actually listen to their stories. I spent two months during residency working with a general surgeon. I received from him the single most important piece of advice I've ever received from any physician - "Listen to your patients." Those four words are deceptively simple and clear, but incredibly difficult to implement at each patient encounter. Our education focuses on clinical knowledge and technical skills, but in order to diagnose even the simplest condition we must listen with intent to learn from our patients.
Listening comes easy for some of us and for others it is a skill that requires continued work and development. I have no stereotypes about who listens better - male or female physicians, primary care or specialists. I do know certain things make me a more effective listener for my patients; having a resident or student in the exam room helps me. My experiences as a hospital chaplain shaped my reflective skills in all types of patient encounters, from the mundane to the dramatic. Even a liability attorney will cite listening as a critical skill for physicians.

Barbara Leff for Treasurer
The following is on behalf of the physicians listed below and while the Medical Society is happy to provide material and information to the members, the opinions expressed below are those of the individual authors and not necessarily, implied or otherwise, of the Maricopa County Medical Society.
We have had a great friend and advocate in the Arizona Legislature for the past fourteen years. Senator Barbara Leff has always been there for us. She has sponsored many bills for the medical community and has been our voice for the many issues that come before the legislature. Barbara was the sponsor of the Affidavit of Merit: Expert Testimony legislation which has stopped all non meritorious lawsuits from going to the Discovery Phase in a lawsuit. . MICA has reported saving millions of dollars as a result of this law. Barbara sponsored the HMO Reform Legislation which included a prompt pay provision for physicians. Because of Barbara's work, all cases dismissed by the Arizona Medical Board are removed from the Board's website. She has sponsored so many pieces of legislation for us that it would take pages to summarize her work on our behalf. In addition, she has prevented hundreds of bills from becoming law that would have been bad for physicians.
Barbara has now reached her Term Limits and will be leaving the Senate. We are very sorry to see her go. We will miss having such a strong advocate in the Legislature.
But we can say thank you and help her to be successful in her next endeavor. Barbara is running for Arizona State treasurer and we are asking you to help her with her campaign. A stable and well run Treasurer's office is vital to the economic success of this State. This impacts everyone living and doing business in Arizona.
Please join us in helping Barbara become the next Arizona State Treasurer. In order to qualify for Clean Elections funding, Barbara needs to collect 2,000 $5 contributions.
We are asking you to help Barbara collect enough contributions to qualify by filling out the enclosed form and sending her a $5 check or cash. Please ask friends and family to do the same. Simply fill out one form per person and sign it. If you and a spouse would both like to donate, you may send cash or one check for $10 but you must both sign the check and send two separate forms. Please make checks payable to Leff for Treasurer. If you solicit friends or family, please also fill out the bottom of the form as the solicitor and sign it as well.
Please send all contributions to Barbara Leff at 8641 N. 55th Place Paradise Valley Az 85253 or to the address on the form.

Progress stalls on multiyear Medicare pay patch
For the third time this year, a 21% cut to Medicare physician pay officially will go into effect after Congress again ran out of time to prevent the reduction.
The Senate left town May 28 for a weeklong Memorial Day recess, although the House later that day passed legislation to prevent cuts through 2011 and replace them with pay raises. Because the upper chamber is not scheduled to return until the week of June 7, the reduction will take effect June 1.
The Senate's lack of action was strongly criticized by physician organizations, including the American Medical Association.
"The Senate has turned its back on seniors, and America's physicians are outraged that Congress has deserted patients by failing to address this year's Medicare cut before the June 1 deadline," said AMA President J. James Rohack, MD. "Senators are more interested in heading home for the holiday than in preventing a Medicare meltdown for seniors."

Congress is not listening: it is time to get patients involved |
| Sign the Petition Online!
The Arizona Medical Association (ArMA) has tried for the last five years to convey to our legislators how devastating a reduction in Medicare payments will be to the sustainability of the program. Virtually every state medical association has taken the same action. While there is uniform agreement in D.C. that the sustainable growth rate (SGR) is broken, there is still no fix, and realistically, one is not on the horizon. It is time to take action to a new level and get patients involved. The Texas Medical Association (TMA) has launched a campaign called Stop the Medicare Meltdown. Their goal was to collect 1,000,000 signatures for a petition letting Congress know that a continuing series of temporary holds are no longer acceptable. The TMA's direct, hard-hitting campaign was shared with every state and our participation was welcomed. In two days this has gone viral; almost every state has joined, along with a growing number of specialty societies. Expectations now have been raised to collecting multiple millions of signatures. This will let Congress know the time for talking is over. ArMA is joining the campaign and everything you will need to get involved is contained in this STAT. Using the electronic petition, sponsored by the TMA, will provide an accurate accounting of all signors in a verifiable format which will be presented to Congress. Every physician and patient signature counts in this campaign. ArMA leadership urges you to assist with the petition drive and to encourage your patients to do so as well. MxSecure's Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Software, MxChart™, Now iPad Compatible
Healthcare providers can now easily access critical patient information in MxChart EMR software wherever they are, via Apple iPad.
EMR software and medical transcription services provider, MxSecure, Inc., today announced that MxChart, their EMR system, is now compatible with the Apple iPad.
"With Apple selling 1 million iPads within the first month, it's easy to predict that mobile devices like this will be widely adopted by the medical profession," says MxSecure's President and CEO, Colin Christie. "We see a lot of situations where immediate access to a patient's medical records, and the ability to review recent labs, X-rays or other diagnostic test results on the run, would add great value to that patient/provider interaction."
