| Longtime MCMS CEO to Retire |
Mr. Anthony Mitten has announced his plans to retire as Executive Director/CEO of the Maricopa County Medical Society and its subsidiary Medical Society Business Services. It is anticipated that his retirement will take place at the end of the first quarter of this year.
Mr. Mitten felt that after 50 years with the Society (36 as Chief Executive Officer) it was time to step back and allow a new generation to assume control of the organization. In discussing his plans recently with Society Officers there was agreement that Mr. Mitten will continue to offer his legal services to members of the Society. A modest stipend to connect him to the Society was discussed and will be implemented on retirement from the Society and Business Services. Additionally, with agreement from the Arizona Foundation, Mr. Mitten will retain his status as Executive Vice President of the Foundation for the foreseeable future working on the basis of hours permitted by the Pension Plan of the Society and Foundation.
For the soon to be vacant Society position, Mr. Mitten felt that Dan Mitten was eminently qualified by education and experience to assume the role of Executive Director of the Society and Business Services. Dan has been the Associate Executive Director of such for the last 11 years and an employee of the organizations for 22 years. MCMS will be preparing a special issue of "Round-up" magazine to honor Mr. Mitten and his accomplishments in the organizations. We welcome physicians to comment or relay a story about Mr. Mitten that can be shared with the membership. Please send your comments and/or well-wishes to MCMS@mcmsonline.com. | |

From the President

 Susan M. Whitely, MD
"Straight from the Source" I should have specialized in public health medicine. I am an intense advocate of efforts to keep our community healthy. I am a vigilant vaccinator; each year I have a flu shot contest with my entire staff competing on teams. When H1N1 announced its presence, I hounded our public health officials for information and vaccines. When the seasonal flu shots were impossible to obtain, I called multiple pharmacies and became a beggar on behalf of my patients and their families.
It was as if I was obtaining black market products - pharmacists literally told me "Don't tell anyone I sold you these vaccines." I talked to so many corporate Walgreen's personnel, I lost count (no luck there), as well as a well-known local physician's flu shot clinic (no luck there). I wrote thank you notes, sent flowers, and even gave a gift card to helpful pharmacists. I read the public health weekly email updates, and watched a lot of news to try to educate myself, my staff and patients. I found our public health officials to be forthcoming and tireless in their efforts to help me with this crisis. And yes, I had pre-ordered my vaccines a year in advance! After all of this, I'm proud of my staff for giving over 2000 vaccines for seasonal and H1N1 flu to our patients. It's not enough, but it's a great start. Complete article... |
| Update from Dr. Bob England |
|
Dear Colleagues:
We still have no sign (yet) of a third wave of the H1N1 flu pandemic nor much of a regular flu season. Keep your fingers crossed and keep vaccinating when you get the chance.
Meanwhile, I have good news. We are all waiting for guidance from the feds on how they want us to dispose of unused or expired vaccine.
While we await these instructions, we're going to take the burden (and cost) of it off your hands.
If you have vaccine that is due to expire, we'll take it from you. When your excess doses reach about 30 days prior to expiration, simply mail them to us (small quantities that can fit into a padded envelope or box), or call us at 602-747-7111 and we'll pick them it up (large quantities). There is no need to keep them cold as we will just be disposing of them.
Mailing address: Maricopa County Public Health 4041 N. Central Ave, Suite 600
Phoenix, AZ 85012 Attn: Eugene See
If you need more vaccine to replace what you're returning, just call the same number (602-747-7111) and we'll get you fresh stock. And of course, if you want more because you're using it up, please call the same number and we'll get you all you want.
The vaccine may be used up to its expiration date, but feel free to return to us any stock that you don't think you'll use. We'll handle it from there.
Thanks again.

| Collegial Invitation from Drs. Rosen & Russo |
|
Dear Colleagues,
As we all know the turmoil in Congress and, the rush to overhaul our nation's medical care, has left all of us with more questions than answers. In this process we have witnessed the worst of partisan politics; a total disregard for the welfare of our patients which is our overriding concern, our responsibility as physicians. The opportunity for Arizona voters to speak out is fast approaching as several key legislative seats are to be decided in this election cycle.
While this event is geared towards the promotion of Jim Ward for election in Arizona's 5th Congressional District, the issues remain pertinent to all physicians regardless of political affiliation. This invitation is a collegial one for physicians to gather and share their concerns regarding healthcare and is in no way a MCMS sponsored event or endorsement, implied or otherwise.
Please join us after work on March 17th. Share a cocktail and conversation on the issues that matter most to the orthopedic surgery community. There is no financial obligation to attend.
Wednesday, March 17, 2010: 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Intercontinental Montelucia Resort: 4949 E. Lincoln Dr. Paradise Valley, AZ 85253
Please RSVP your attendance to Michelle Marini at (602) 274-1988 or Michelle@votejimward.com

Sebelius, Solis Announce Nearly $1 Billion Recovery Act Investment in Advancing Use of Health IT, Training Workers for Health Jobs of the Future
|
Grant Awards to Help Make Health IT Available to Over 100,000 Health Providers by 2014, Support Tens of Thousands of Jobs Nationwide
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis today announced a total of nearly $1 billion in Recovery Act awards to help health care providers advance the adoption and meaningful use of health information technology (IT) and train workers for the health care jobs of the future. The awards will help make health IT available to over 100,000 hospitals and primary care physicians by 2014 and train thousands of people for careers in health care and information technology. This Recovery Act investment will help grow the emerging health IT industry which is expected to support tens of thousands of jobs ranging from nurses and pharmacy techs to IT technicians and trainers.
The over $750 million in HHS grant awards Secretary Sebelius announced today are part of a federal initiative to build capacity to enable widespread meaningful use of health IT. This assistance at the state and regional level will facilitate health care providers' efforts to adopt and use electronic health records (EHRs) in a meaningful manner that has the potential to improve the quality and efficiency of health care for all Americans. Of the over $750 million investment, $386 million will go to 40 states and qualified State Designated Entities (SDEs) to facilitate health information exchange (HIE) at the state level, while $375 million will go to an initial 32 non-profit organizations to support the development of regional extension centers (RECs) that will aid health professionals as they work to implement and use health information technology - with additional HIE and REC awards to be announced in the near future. RECs are expected to provide outreach and support services to at least 100,000 primary care providers and hospitals within two years.

New Senate bill would put off 21.2% Medicare. Pay cut now in effect until October 1st.
|
| Senate Democrats this afternoon introduced yet another bill designed to temporarily spare physicians the 21.2% Medicare pay cut that took effect today on account of partisan gridlock in Congress last week.
The bill, which also extends expired unemployment benefits,
subsidies for health insurance premiums, and various tax breaks, would
postpone the effective date of the massive cut to October 1.
Organized medicine has expressed outrage over the reimbursement
reduction, arguing that it will force physicians to turn away Medicare
patients and military families, whose coverage under TRICARE is based
on Medicare rates. Last week, Senate Democrats unveiled legislation
that would have postponed the effective date of the pay cut by 30 days,
but Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) blocked the measure, saying sponsors hadn't
provided a way to pay for its cost. That impasse angered the American
Medical Association. Complete Article...

Health reform is top ACP priority in annual status report
|
| The U.S. health care system is in such decline that
major reforms are needed to address the high number of uninsured,
dwindling number of primary care physicians and rising costs of
administering care, the American College of Physicians concluded in a
recent report.
The political climate in Washington is too highly partisan and
polarized for lawmakers to craft effective piecemeal reforms to address
the health challenges facing the nation today, the ACP said in its
annual "State of the Nation's Health Care" report. Those challenges
include making health insurance coverage more affordable, available and
secure; ensuring a sufficient supply of primary care physicians and
specialists; and reforming payment and delivery systems to achieve
better value. But such measures can be achieved, the internists' organization said,
if lawmakers take the House and Senate bills passed late last year and
agree on a legislative pathway to enact a final bill.
