Gilbert Hospital in favor of Healthcare Reform

Gilbert Hospital is in support of healthcare reform, but not as is currently being proposed and bandied about in Congress.  David Wanger, CEO of Gilbert Hospital is weighing in on healthcare reform and what it truly means to hospitals and individuals.

"Everyone wants to lower costs for healthcare, but nothing meaningful will happen with respects to reform until the issues of tort/malpractice,  insurance portability, removing pre-existing conditions and purchasing insurance across state lines are addressed" said Wanger.  He continues that "anything short of addressing those needs and others is empty rhetoric and frankly delaying what truly has to happen for reform to be realized."

Two Physicians Named to the Arizona Medical Board
Governor Jan Brewer has appointed Gordi Khera, M.D.(MCMS Member) and Jody Jenkins, M.D., for five year terms as members of the Arizona Medical Board.  Dr. Khera is Board-certified in Cardiovascular Disease and maintains a practice with Cardiovascular Consultants of Phoenix. Dr. Jenkins is Board-certified in General Surgery and is with Cochise Surgical Care in Sierra Vista.

The Arizona Medical Board has 12 members composed of eight physicians and four public
members, one of whom must be a registered nurse. The members of the Board are appointed
by the Governor and are confirmed by the State Senate.

The next Board meeting is Wednesday, February 10, 2010, beginning at 8:00am. The meeting is
open to the public, and the agenda is available at the Board's Web site, www.azmd.gov.

The Arizona Medical Board licenses and regulates more than 20,500 MDs. Board offices are
located at 9545 East Doubletree Ranch Road in Scottsdale.
AzHHA Launches Newly Enhanced Online Job Service
The Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA) Service Corporation announces the launch of its enhanced interactive job board, www.AzHealthjobs.com . The job board offers its members, and the healthcare industry at large, an easy-to-use and highly targeted resource for online employment connections.

With Arizona's hospitals recognized as the one sector of the state's economy that has grown throughout the recession, www.AzHealthjobs.com provides a muchneeded resource for employers as well as job seekers. Hospitals currently employ 73,000 Arizonans and generate $11.5 billion to Arizona's gross state product.

Although the state's jobless rate continues to rise, the healthcare community added 1,700 jobs last month.  "We're very excited about the enhancements to AzHealthjobs, because we know how critical it is for employers in the healthcare industry to attract first-rate talent with a minimum expenditure of time and resources," said Patricia Weidman,
Director of Workforce and Staffing Services for AzHHA. "And it's important for us to help enable smooth career transitions for those seeking industry jobs."

ID theft rule decision offers doctors a way out

A recent federal court decision could offer physicians and other health professionals an avenue for relief from a Federal Trade Commission regulation requiring them to implement a formal identity theft prevention program or face penalties.

The Dec. 1, 2009, ruling by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia blocked the commission from applying the "red flags" rule to lawyers. The decision prompted the American Medical Association and others to petition the commission in January for a similar exclusion for physicians and other health care professionals.

Curbing obesity:  Doctors play key role

Structured weight-loss plans with regular doctor visits were more effective at helping extremely obese patients lose weight than less-intensive programs, according to a study in the Jan. 25 Archives of Internal Medicine.

In the two-year study, 390 Louisiana adults with a body mass index of 40 or greater were randomly assigned to two groups -- usual care condition and intensive medical intervention.

Physicians instructed the 190 participants in the usual care condition group on how to use a weight management Web site and scheduled two annual visits with them.

Secret Order turns over some pretty big rocks to examine medical ethics, power and money-with a dash of humor
Secret Order is the story of a brilliant young scientist who may have discovered the cure for cancer.  Playwright Bob Clyman explores the impact of that discovery beyond the lab in Actors Theatre's production on Stage West at Herberger Theater Center from March 5-21.

Writing for nytheatre.com, Michael Criscuolo described Secret Order as "a taut, stimulating drama about the moral and ethical dilemmas involved in the high stakes world of medical research."

Broadway.com said that Secret Order is "a first-rate work of substance that is not afraid to turn over some pretty big rocks and examine what lies beneath.  Medical ethics, power, and money are just a few of the specimens under his microscope.  Throw in religion, fraud, and father-son relationships, and you begin to get a sense of the range of issues Clyman deals with."

Matthew Wiener will direct the fast-paced story of Dr. William Shumway, a 30-something cell biologist who may have found a way to get cancer cells to self-destruct.  The discovery leads to a job offer at a prestigious cancer-research institute in New York led by the ambitious Dr. Robert Brock, who sees a Nobel Prize in the future.  As news of Shumway's research spreads, a young Harvard University student, Alice Curiton, goes after a summer internship with Shumway.

Brock later tells Shumway, whose work is being sought for a piece in the New England Journal of Medicine, he's been offered a Friday slot for a presentation about his research at an esteemed conference in Tucson, but would rather he have a time on Saturday.   Before the conference Shumway realizes there's an issue with his research, which sets up a scientific and moral quandary testing the will, desire and integrity of everyone.

Cale Epps appears as Dr. Shumway, Mark DeMichele as Robert Brock, ASU student Jessica Weaver is Alice Suriton and David Vining is Dr. Saul Roth, the 67-year old Chief of Toxicology at Hill-Matheson, who is both Brock's boss and biggest career obstacle.
