Greetings!
Preston 2012

As I was going through the mail that Janae left on the counter this week, I saw several graduation announcements for young people leaving high school. That got me to thinking what an exciting time this is for these young people. They've spent their lives under their parent's wing and now they are ever so close to the point of leaving the nest. Many will be continuing on with their education, many others will be entering the work force and looking for that right career, while others may be moving in the direction of the military.

I always enjoy meeting and talking to these young people. So much of their life is ahead of them, and the enthusiasm that they have for the future is contagious. They are looking forward to all that lies ahead. Some are even anxious or scared of the unknown. If you get a chance to talk to or be with these teenagers in the right setting, I have found them to be full of questions about school, careers, being independent from their parents, or the expense of living on your own.

Congratulations to all the high school and college seniors. Most have a lot of time, effort and someone's money invested in them. I challenge these graduates to make a difference for the good, maintain high family values, and keep your ethics and morals unquestionable. My time to make a difference is coming to a close. Now, it is your time, your time to reach out and make your mark. We as parents always want our children to achieve higher goals than we have, and we want nothing but the very best from and for them.

GOOD LUCK to the Graduating Class of 2012!

Our Role as Leaders

Each of us functions in a leadership role. Whether you lead a family, a multi-million dollar company, a corner café, or a goal group, we are all leaders. At least one person will look to you for guidance and direction.  What will they see?

A great leader understands the importance of initiative as they motivate, guide, and provide the initial motion for any team, group or organization they are called to lead. As leaders, we have an opportunity to speak into the lives of others. How will you use this

Recently, the head of NACM Tampa's Collection Department was asked what was the number one mistake creditors make that come across her desk? Her answer was the lack of an updated credit application hinders the collection process more than anything else. Officers and Principals of companies come and go. The person you did business with five years ago may have nothing to do with you getting paid today.

Every three or four years, go to Sunbiz and verify the officers of your active accounts with the ones listed on your credit application. If they don't match, obtain an updated application. If an account as been inactive for two years or more, ask for an updated application before shipping that next load of ready mix concrete or concrete blocks.

Georgia Tech Builds Carbon-Neutral Lab

Next-Gen Concrete Could Last for 16,000 Years

Civil engineers at MIT are currently exploring ways to create concrete with reduced creep that will be able to last for 16,000 years. Sustained Growth: Not Enough to Satisfy?

What Can We Expect for the Remainder of 2012?

When serving a copy of the filed construction lien to the property owner per F.S.S. 713.08(4) (c) don't forget to send a Demand for Copy of Contract and Statement of Account per your rights under F.S.S. 713.16(1), as well. If the party served does not reply within 30 days after the demand is made, they would lose the opportunity to be awarded their attorney's fees from you should they be deemed as the prevailing party in a construction lien case F.S.S. 713.16(5) (b).

Floridians Right-to-Work

FHBA Action News reported in the May 21, 2012 edition that U.S. District Judge James Boasberg declared invalid a new rule proposed by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that would have accelerated the union representation process.

"At issue was the 'ambush' election rule that would dramatically shorten the amount of time for an employer to organize a response to attempts to employees to unionize. Where previously an employer would have up to six weeks to prepare for a union election, the NLRB's new procedure would compress the current average time from moving from petition to organize a union down to as little as 10 days."

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce filed a legal challenge seeking to overturn the NLRB rule, which went into effect on April 30, 2012.

This is indeed a special victory for the independent family business owners of FICAP.
