Preston

This, absolutely, is one of my favorite times of the year. A couple of weeks ago our family spent a Sunday afternoon putting up the Christmas tree and the countless other decorations that only come out for one month of the year. My kids have yet to figure out that the time we are spending now together as a family during this Christmas season, will be the memories that not only encompass so much of what they remember of our family, but is also the foundation they will use when one day they start their own families. The decorations, the gifts, the smell of all the wonderful things (cookies, pies, cakes) that my wife is preparing in the kitchen certainly make an impression on me.

Last weekend we participated in a Christmas program at our church. This, I hope and pray, will be such an important part of our children's memories as they grow up. If you celebrate Christmas for its true meaning, I would encourage you to do as we do. Spend some time with your family, especially children and amidst all the lights, tinsel and food to reflect on why we celebrate this time of year, to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

If you were not able to make the Annual FICAP Christmas Banquet in Lakeland, you not only missed a great dinner and a very challenging trivia game arranged by Michele, but some great time and cheer with your FICAP family. We looked back over the year and reflected on the things shared and accomplished together as a trade association. There was also some time to think about what is to come for next year. This is always such a wonderful event so plan to attend next year and bring your spouses.

If you are a Producer, make sure you plan to attend our January program, dealing with new and challenging issues associated with accepting credit card payments. Does your customer use your money for a month, forty-five or sixty days and then want to pay you by credit card so they get those reward points? We have an expert, Rudet Fountain from United Transaction, who has agreed to share some tips that just might impact your bottom line.

Michele has done her usually good job of planning well thought out programs that will benefit our members for the first part of 2012. It looks like 2012 is shaping up to be very busy for FICAP.

Speaking on behalf of the Sparkmans (Preston, Janae, Ashton and Ethan) I want to wish each of you and your families the very best this Christmas Season, and may your travels be safe.

Merry Christmas

FICAP PAC                                                                         by Wade Mullins

WadeWe certainly have a lot of information to share with you this month. First, let me say I am extremely proud of so many FICAP members, Bob Thomas, Chuck Parliment, Gary Clements, Scott Baker, and Mark Carroll who were able to join your Executive Director, Michele Stropoli, and myself in Tallahassee and support for our industry during Concrete Days in the state capital. Thank you so much for going beyond the call of duty.

Even though I took a few months off from penning a regular "In The Mix" column on the various political happenings around the state, does not mean things have been quiet with state government. As you know, the FICAP PAC has been doing what it can to assist the Masonry Association of Florida with the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 412 by Bennett and House Bill (HB) 403 by Caldwell. Several FICAP members have been meeting with state legislators In their district offices this fall, as we try and convince our lawmakers to help us with this endeavor.

Over and over we have heard the following, "why do we as an industry need to come to the legislature for assistance when we should be able to collectively decide on our own to assess ourselves," and thus be able to promote, conduct research and educate others about concrete masonry? When we have explained to the legislators that we are merely trying to comply with anti-trust laws, the vast majority of our elected officials have understood.

SB 412 received its first committee hearing on Monday December 5 in Senate Community Affairs. There was some good discussion and suggestions made by the committee members. SB 412 passed unanimously out of this committee, and into the Government Oversight & Accountability Committee, which is chaired by Senator Jeremy Ring.

HB 403 by Caldwell was scheduled to be heard in November during the Concrete Coalition days. However, one of the House Members, who happens to be in a position of leadership, pulled it from Consumer & Business Affairs Subcommittee Chairman Doug Holder's agenda. MAF Lobbyist David Ramba is working very hard to get the bill moving forward, as are others. If you live in or know someone who lives in House District 28, please contact me so I can give you the details on how you can help us move HB 403 by Caldwell forward.

Another item, which should really get your attention, is what the wood industry and in particular, the Florida Building Materials Association, just announced. They are going to push for a building code change in Florida that would allow wood construction in Florida schools. Since their newsletter is copyrighted, click here and read what they intend to do. This is very scary.

If that does not get your attention, and cause each and every one of our members to financially support the efforts of the FICAP PAC (as little as $100 per year), then a stronger organization with much deeper pockets may just run us over and take away what business we have left.

Just last spring during the 2011 legislative Session, the wood industries advocate in Tallahassee tried to get a bill amended, which would have allowed wood construction to be used in our schools. You seriously don't believe rational thinking prevailed on that legislator and caused him to consider the impact this would have had on the concrete masonry industry, do you? No, that legislator was just going to help someone or some organization that asked for that legislator's assistance, until someone else spoke out on behalf of our industry. That someone just happened to be David Ramba, who just days before had been hired to represent the Masonry Association of Florida. The amendment was never filed.

FICAP formed our PAC in 2005. Even I underestimated how important our political involvement would become. I am still thankful that then FICAP President, Jimmy Keys, made a push for FICAP to take that political plunge, and form our PAC.

Many of you have told me your company doesn't get involved with PACS, or they already participate with other trade organizations in their political efforts. You should still be a member of the FICAP PAC, even if that is on an individual basis. Your bang for the buck could not be better spent. If you would like more information, please give me a call.

Here Come's A New Year...                                                                         Director's Corner

2010 Head Shot...and new opportunities for a brighter tomorrow.  As the hustle and bustle of the Christmas celebration consume our energy and thoughts, it's easy to forget there are those working on behalf of our industry and those in the military protecting our freedom's and rights.  Those with vision, who understand the ways of today will not sustain us tomorrow, and they're willing to take action. We are truly blessed to live, work and play in such a wonderful country and state.

The Christmas season is also a time of great loneliness for some. People who have lost a loved one, or are suffering through an illness, or those who have followed in Scrooge's footsteps and find themselves surrounded by bad choices and bitterness.  Many around us suffer from depression or loneliness, so please take some time this season to reach out to at least one person.  Your call or email might put the jingle back in their steps.

As I've shopped this Christmas, I've tried to consider the staff and cashiers of the shops. A genuine smile or word of encouragement makes a huge difference in their days. Time and time again they stop, take a deep breath, and thank me with a smile on their face in return.  We have the capacity to encourage or discourage those around us.  Are you a Mr. Grinch or a Jingle Bell Rock kind of person?

Oh, oh, oh...let me just say, you must listen to the Christmas song by Train,  Shake Up Christmas
If this song doesn't put the happy in your step, then you need to take a serious look at where you're walking.  You could also try Christmas in Hollis by Run-DMC.  Both keep a spring in my step.

I love Christmas and all the busyness that we've added to it.  What a bright time, it's the right time, to rock the night away.  Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet; that's the jingle bell, that's the jingle bell, that's the jingle bell rock!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...I'm off to cook chicken and collard greens. <smile>

As a side note...the FICAP office will be closed between Christmas and New Year's.

Housing starts and permits surge; levels still low

A surge in apartment construction gave builders more work in November. But 2011 is still shaping up to be one of the worst years in history for homebuilders. A surge in apartment construction gave home builders more work in November. And permits, a gauge of future construction, rose largely because of a jump in apartment permits. The rise in permits provides hope for the housing market, though 2011 is still shaping up as one of the worst years in history for homebuilders. 2012 Will be Better....If All Goes According to Plan

It is often said that to assume makes a you know what out of you and me but without assumptions there is not much that can be done as far as forecasting is concerned. There is nothing especially magical about December as far as an economy is concerned but we are calendar driven people and that means that people want to know if the next year will be any better or worse than the year before and the economists of the world oblige with their assertions about what to expect in the next few months. Florida Tourism Industry Saw Modest Growth During 2011

A flood of new visitors from Brazil and a stunning post-oil-spill rebound by Panhandle beaches were bright spots in 2011 for a Florida tourism industry that has weathered some hard times the past couple of years. The $60 billion industry experienced modest growth this year, and officials expect a similar bump in 2012 as the nation's economy continues to improve and the BP oil spill that fouled the shores of Gulf Coast states last year becomes a more distant memory. The real estate market is expected to stay sluggish for the first half of the year, but may finally improve by the end of 2012.

2011 has been a long, difficult year, with the economy continuing to limp along, unemployment hovering around 9%, Occupy Wall Street protesters demonstrating in most major cities and Congress displaying an embarrassing inability to put partisan politics aside and address the nation's economic problems. As the end of the year approaches, one can't help but hope for better news in the year ahead. Hope is not a strategy, however. To see whether 2012 will be any better, let's look at one key economic sector: the nation's housing market. Read More
