TopGreetings!

Preston

First, let me thank our friends at American Cement for hosting the October Roving Meeting at their Sumterville Cement Mill. What an event! Not only did we have absolutely beautiful weather to enjoy and great Barbeque for dinner, but were also given a tour of their manufacturing facility. The hospitality Cary, Skip and crew provided us was greatly enjoyed by a large contingent of FICAP members from around the state. Plus, the Producers even got the opportunity to conduct a Board meeting earlier in the afternoon in the Training Room at American.

Let me remind everyone that due to the hectic schedule we have this month, FICAP will not be having a General Membership meeting in November. The big push for November has been on the Concrete Days, which was our industry's legislative push in Tallahassee that was held on Nov 15th and 16th. A large contingent of people from all aspects of the Concrete and Masonry Industry were there promoting a very specific agenda. The last count I heard was about 55 individuals roamed the halls of the Capital. They met with a majority of the legislators getting the industry message out that the Concrete and Concrete Masonry Industry is united, it is a Florida industry, our products are energy efficient, sustainable, and when used keep most of the money generated here at home. Creating jobs by utilizing Florida made products was repeated over and over. FICAP will keep you informed as the 2012 legislative Session unfolds.

Our December Christmas dinner will once again be held at the Lone Palm Country Club in Lakeland December 15th. Michele has already circulated details so get those reservations made now. This is always a great time to get together with our friends in the industry over some good food and spirits. I would encourage everyone to bring their spouse and friends. This is an event that you will not want to miss.

We will be celebrating Thanksgiving in just a few days. This is one of the holidays that's about family time. My family will be heading to North Carolina to visit my father. I encourage everyone to take the time to put our business aside and take this day to be with family and to be thankful for all the things that we are so fortunate to have. We live in the greatest country in the world, and are involved in a great industry that has provided for all our families. More importantly, as we gather around the thanksgiving table, we need to give thanks for the many blessings that we often take for granted, but are so lucky to have.

Janae and I wish you the very best this Thanksgiving Holiday.

Sincerely,

Preston Signature

2011 Concrete Days in Tallahassee

 Florida Check-off Image

Fifty-five concrete industry constituents descended on Tallahassee, Florida November 15 - 16th 2011 to promote "Concrete." They included fourteen representatives from the masonry industry, including the Masonry Association of Florida (MAF), and six masonry contractors.

The promotion began Tuesday evening with a reception at the Governors Club where the concrete representatives socialized with many legislators and other "movers and shakers", discussing industry challenges and the resulting effect on the Florida economy. This theme continued the next day at an industry only breakfast to plan the day's events. We divided into teams of four - five people and received our assignments for legislator visits at the capitol building. Read More

ASTM Soil and Rock Standard                                                                                       Technical Corner

Deep Foundation Elements Are Subject of Proposed ASTM Soil and Rock Standard
A proposed new ASTM International standard will cover procedures for assessing the integrity of concrete in cast-in-place deep foundation elements such as bored piles, drilled shafts and auger cast piles.

The proposed standard, ASTM WK34326, Test Method for Integrity Testing of Concrete Deep Foundations by Thermal Profiling, is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D18.11 on Deep Foundations, part of ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock.

According to Garland Likins, Pile Dynamics Inc., and a D18 member, ASTM WK34326 will be useful because it will enable the evaluation of a total concrete cross section, including the concrete outside the reinforcing cage.

A Great Industry Effort                                                                                                Director's Corner

Michele 2010If you were a part of the Tallahassee efforts last week, you know what a success we experienced. If you weren't, you should make every effort to participate next year.  Fifty five industry representatives (producers, suppliers, masonry contractors and industry partners) stormed the Capitol and met with more than 100 legislators.  The response was tremendous and the message was well received - Concrete puts Florida back to work.

We have many to thank for the success.  Dave Ramba, Mike Murtha, Wade Mullins and Pat McLaughlin have done a great job of preparing and packaging HB403 (SB412), Florida Concrete Masonry Products Research, Education and Promotion Act (Masonry Check-off). Wade Mullins and Mike Murtha also provided additional bill numbers and information on other issues that affect our industry in which to share with those in Tallahassee.  All made for great conversations with our legislators.

A HUGE thank you goes to Mike Murtha who invested a great deal of time and energy coordinating this event (with a lot of help from Laura).  Mike arranged the legislative appointments, a reception, breakfast, luncheon, packet of materials, lanyards and a truck display.  Thank you Mike and also thank you Chairman Rick Edwards and the Board of Directors of FCPA for your hospitality.

My political mentor, Wade Mullins, believes I should meet often with my legislators so they understand my interests and concerns, and possibly remember my name. I decided to try it his way, and I'm only going to say this once, "He was right." Ugh.  It is a great idea and even though regular contact does not guarantee they will support your position or bill, it does gain you an audience and the ability to share your point of view.  Thank you Wade for your perseverance in training me.

By the time this newsletter is published, I will be on vacation and enjoying Thanksgiving week with my family.  Nothing against any of you, but I'm REALLY looking forward to the break from routine and more time in the kitchen.  I may not know concrete mix designs or have political savvy, but I know my way around a kitchen and love spending time in it. I've decided to share one of my favorite recipes; something I expect will become part of your lineup of must haves in the future. I discovered this recipe in the mid 90's and it's one of the few I did not feel the need to tweak. It's elegant enough for a first course or hearty enough for the main dish. Don't be stingy with the ingredients and whatever you do, don't use inferior products. You should always buy the best you can afford for every effort in the kitchen and you should use fresh when possible. The fewer trips down the center isles of the grocery store, the healthier it is for your family. That's just Mama Stropoli talking (notice I left off Sugar-Adam and Gary).

I hope you have a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving!
