Gary's profile
Are you ready for some football?  I am, and we are already in the thick of it.  Football is a wonderful team sport, requiring precise execution of the given assignment by each player on each play in order for the team to be successful.

What makes one team more successful than another?  They all prepare about the same way: weeks of conditioning, hours of studying play books, and endless repetitions of running plays until they are perfected.  I think more often than not the difference between successful and unsuccessful teams can be attributed to three things: instilling the idea of team instead of self, recruiting great talent in key positions, and precision play-calling by the coaches based on hours of studying their team and their opponent.

Following these principles has led to success even against seemingly insurmountable odds.  Two excellent examples in recent years are wins by Appalachian State over

then- #5 Michigan, and again on Saturday as James Madison University beat #13 Virginia Tech.  In both these incidences a small school with "no chance to win" beat a top school in the nation at the opponent's home stadium - an amazing accomplishment against seemingly insurmountable odds.  They believed in their team, used their talents to their advantage, and made key decisions at crucial times. They had a plan and they worked their plan.

The football analogy is not unlike our businesses.  As we attempt to operate our businesses in a winning manner in a depressed industry, in an ailing economy, and cope with an administration that makes one bad decision after another, it would appear that we are facing seemingly insurmountable odds. But like Appalachian State and James Madison, we need to have a good plan and work it.  We must have talented people in key positions. We have all cut our staffs significantly over the past few years, and we have probably accomplished this goal just from sheer attrition.  It is our job as managers to instill in our employees a sense of team, they must believe in what we are doing.  We have to use the talents of our companies to our advantage.

How do we best do this?  If I may borrow a quote from the keynote speaker at our convention, Kraig Kramers, "walk the four corners," know your employees and what they think.   There is a wealth of knowledge and quality ideas in the teams we have assembled.   When we have these things in place it helps us, as managers, to make the proper calls at the proper times.

The formidable opponent that faces our industry, our businesses, FICAP, and the economy of Florida is Amendment 4.  As we all know, if Amendment 4 is passed in November, our industry and the Florida economy will be devastated.   How do we work the plan?  We at FICAP already have an awesome team, our dedicated members.  In fact, one of our sister organizations recently stated that in their opinion member participation is the strength of FICAP.  We have a tremendous number of talented people in FICAP.  I encourage all of you to take the message to the community, speak at your Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, at your church, talk to your golf buddies and neighbors.  The plan is clear and simple- get the message out to everyone you can - VOTE NO ON 4.

I am convinced that if we believe in what we are doing, and we use our talents and opportunities to our advantage and work the plan, we can be - and will be - successful in November.

"People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society."  Vince Lombardi

I look forward to celebrating this victory with you in November.

FICAP PAC News                                                                         Wade Mullins, Chairman

WadeLike it or not, politics is an important part of our lives. It, also, has a huge impact on our ability to do business profitably. Whether or not you consider yourself "political," get involved in the political process for the benefit of your industry, your     local community, and the great state of Florida.

Now what does getting involved mean from a practical standpoint?

First, it means voting in the November 2, 2010 general election. A lot of people around the world would love the opportunity

to participate in a free election like you and I do. I know President Obama gets the headlines and you are bombarded with all

those attack ads, and you are sick of it. My suggestion would be to ignore all of the sound bites. Watch the debates. Read not one but two newspaper editorials on an issue or a candidate.

Second, it means opposing Amendment 4, the proposed constitutional amendment that would put all land use changes to a public referendum. Please, please, please talk to your neighbors, family members, and folks where you attend worship services about this bad idea. Florida's unemployment rate is about 12%, whereas the construction industry's unemployment rate is over 20%. If Amendment 4 passes, that figure could go up to 30% in my opinion. This Amendment is all about jobs.

Your FICAP PAC met recently and voted to contribute $5000 to support a coalition of other Florida businesses fight Amendment 4, and support candidates who are running for statewide office.

Third, it means joining FICAP's PAC.

If we can help you with any questions about the election, please give us a call.

Coal Combustion Residuals (CCRs) ---- "Fly ash" Beneficial or Toxic?

There has been a lot of interest in the fate of fly ash with reference to the possibility of being designated a hazardous material. The proposed  EPA rule titled "Hazardous and Solid Waste Management System; Identification and Listing of Special Wastes; Disposal of Coal Combustion Residuals From Electric Utilities" is a mere 138 pages of governmental prose that tends to invoke a sleepy confusion as do most governmental documents. Basically it is a proposal by EPA to regulate Coal Combustion Residuals (CCRs) under the "Resource Conservation and Recovery Act" (RCRA) and to address the disposal of CCRs generated by coal ash used at electric utilities. CCRs are fly ash, bottom ash, boiler slag or flue gas desulfurization materials.   Read More

You Learn What You Live                                  Michele Stropoli, Executive Director

2010 Head Shot

The year I was born, Ross Laboratories published a Parent's Creed and provided it in a care package to military families. After I had a child, my mother passed the creed to me, where it currently hangs on my office wall.  The message was intended to help parents raise healthy, happy children, but I find it helps in my adult life as well.  It reads...

If a child lives with criticism, He learns to condemn.

If a child lives with hostility, He learns to fight.

If a child lives with ridicule, He learns to be shy.

If a child lives with shame, He learns to feel guilty.

If a child lives with tolerance, He learns to be patient.

If a child lives with encouragement, He learns confidence.

If a child lives with praise, He learns to appreciate.

If a child lives with fairness, He learns justice.

If a child lives with security, He learns to have faith.

If a child lives with approval, He learns to like himself.

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,

He learns to find love in the world.

I recognize a lot of my faults, and one of them is when "I'm all business" and forget the niceties of life.  I fire off that email intended as a reminder, and realize I forgot the please and thank you.  I get caught up in the busy routine and forget the personal touch and difference a phone call might make. We are all caught up in a world gone crazy where a smile, or a simple nice gesture, things we took for granted at one time, make a huge difference to the people around us.

If you make a difference in one person's life, then you've made a difference, and that matters.

I hope you have a great week!
