Greetings! |

This month's article is not written by Gary Clements, President of FICAP, but by Gary Clements, Papa to Lily, our wonderful 2 month old granddaughter. If you Google words like perfect and beautiful you will probably see her picture.
We at FICAP have had the privilege of having four very high-profile speakers address us over the past couple of months. And while their individual opinions on the state of the economy differed to some extent, for the most part they all came to the same conclusion. Indicators show that the economy is improving slowly but steadily, and although things are not going to be the bed of roses that we had hoped for, it certainly should not be the briar patch we have had to pick our way through for the past couple of years. Most of us left the meetings with a sense that there is still much work to be done. I believe that to be true, we must continue to closely scrutinize our businesses and our plans, cultivate new customers, and nurture existing ones.
As I mentioned above, Lynn and I have entered the role of grandparenthood and think it is one of the most incredible things on earth. As we held Lily for the 1st time, we both quickly realized that certain things that had mattered suddenly didn't anymore. As we operate our businesses during these difficult conditions it is easy for us to get consumed in the daily demands that are placed upon our time, and in dealing with issues that are completely out of our control. We should all be reminded that managing our businesses is what we do, not who we are. Who we are is defined by our relationships. And the most important relationships are with our Creator, spouse, family and friends. One day through myriad circumstances we will all be disconnected from the business world we live in everyday. At that point what we will have left is our relationships.
It is important to our success to ensure that our businesses are as efficient as they can be. It is paramount to our success to insure that our relationships with family and friends are as strong as they can be. Both take a lot of work and both provide great benefits. "Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget." - anonymous
I look forward to seeing all of you at our dinner meeting on the 18th. ProMasonry is the subject. Don't forget, you can now register online for our convention which is July 16 & 17 at the Sandpearl Resort in Clearwater. You can make your room reservations now as well. Be sure to tell them you are with FICAP to ensure the proper discounted room rates.
See you at the Sandpearl... it is 5:00 right there.

FICAP's Pay Per View... Michele Stropoli, Executive Director |

Most of you should know who Tiffany Duffy is and that she works with
Separation Technologies. If not, at the next meeting, look for the beautiful
blonde woman with the ready laugh and smile. Tiffany is a delight and I've
heard through the grapevine that our members have a difficult time telling her
no, so I put this theory to the test...I asked her to tackle the 50/50 drawing at
the Economic Forum.
Tiffany stood at the entrance to the banquet hall, smiled, was her charming self, and raised $ 800.00. Yes, you read that correctly. This was, by far, the largest 50/50 drawing in FICAP history.
When it was time for the actual drawing, President Gary Clements unknowingly issued a challenge. You see, up to this point, Chuck Parliment of Parliment Building Products and Ron Pafford of Suwannee American Cement were tied with the most money raised, and Gary pointed this out to the audience. Not to be outdone, they have thrown down the gauntlet...the challenge is on...the race may begin...they will put up or shut up at the banquet on Saturday night at this year's convention. Who will win the competition? You need to be there to find out.
Saturday night, July 17th, FICAP's own Pay Per View.
For those wondering, Marty Smith of American Cement was the big winner at the Forum, so he took home $ 400.00. The other $ 400.00 was deposited into the Scholarship Fund.
If the challengers are successful, someone stands to win the largest 50/50 pot in the history of FICAP. What a way to end the week...with enough cash to pay for your trip. It could happen...after all...we will celebrate Another Day in Paradise.
Thank you!

Goal Group 3 News and Highlights by Ron Pafford
Well, like most, I seem busier than ever trying to produce positive and tangible results. The great news is that Goal Group #3 (GG3) continues to produce these type of results for our association! Read More
News from Goal Group 4 by Chuck Parliment
We continue to finalize the updating of the FICAP By-Laws and the Articles of Incorporation. The board at their last meeting approved three policies we recommended for adoption - 1) Document Retention, 2) Whistleblower Policy, 3) Conflict of Interest Policy.
We have also selected a Producer of the Year. This prestigious award will be presented at the annual convention at the Sandpearl in July. You must be present to receive the award. So every producer should be in attendance.

Red Flags Rule by Bennett Acuff, Esq. Hill Ward Henderon
Time is running out to understand, implement, and comply with the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) "Red Flags Rule," 16 C.F.R. § 681.2. Although the FTC has delayed the compliance date four times (originally scheduled for November 1, 2008), it appears the June 1, 2010 deadline is set in stone. The Red Flags Rule will apply to a wide array of business organizations and understanding compliance requirements is vital. But what is the purpose of the Rule and how will businesses comply? Credit Managers Index - Innovative Use of Data
The Credit Managers Index was created by the National Association of Credit Management about ten years ago and is a good example of the innovation that comes from data analysis. The credit manager is in a unique position within a corporation. They are the ones who are constantly reminding the sales force that it isn't a sale until the company is paid and they control the flow of finance and credit more profoundly than even banks in many respects. Pro-Union Appointments to the National Labor Relations Board
Pose Concerns for Employers
By Brian C. Ussery, Esq. Thompson, Sizemore, Gonzalez & Hearing, P.A.
There are few areas of the law more directly impacted by the White House than the National Labor Relations Act, and its policies affecting labor relations. This is due to the fact that the National Labor Relations Board ("NLRB"), the agency charged with conducting union representation elections and resolving allegations of unfair labor practices in the workplace, is governed by a five-person board, all of whom are typically nominated by the President subject to confirmation by the Senate. Historically, the nomination process has resulted in a board comprised of a 3-2 majority of members from the political party of the sitting President that utilizes its majority status to implement labor-relations policy that mirrors the President's party-line politics. To this end, a Democratic-majority NLRB has traditionally favored a decidedly "pro-union" policy, which it implements through decisions in various labor cases. Read More

Let's Clear Up the Fly-Ash Dilemma: Is It a Danger or Not?
There's plenty of irony in the possibility that fly ash, a by-product of coal combustion, now may be classified as a hazardous waste by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It has been successfully recycled for years in what previously had been considered an environmental triumph. Punishing the sound environmental use of fly ash, especially as a substitute for cement in concrete, is the wrong direction. Read More

Energy-Efficient Concrete Homes By Ed Sauter
All but the most ardent skeptics agree that climate change is occurring. Although the ramifications and causes are debatable, nearly everyone agrees that man-produced CO2 is a major contributor to climate change and global warming. It is a fact that the operation of residential buildings in the U.S. comprises 21% of our energy consumption. Other statistics are even more convincing. We must do more to reduce energy consumption, and thereby CO2 contributions, in our homes and buildings. Read More

Environmental Compliance and Ready Mix Producers by Patrick Lear
Permit compliance is a daily job requirement for concrete batch plant operators. It involves many facets of the site operations and includes maintenance and operational practices which target the reduction and prevention of stormwater contamination. In order to be effective the permit requirements and ideals must be understood and practiced by all facility personnel. Read More

Why are we afraid of Air?
by Drew Vermeulen, Technical Service Engineer at SAC
Air Entrainment has been around since the late 1930s and is often required in modern concrete:
Sometimes concrete is subject to freeze/thaw situations.
Sometimes specifications require entrained air for apparently no reason.
Other times it is left completely up to the concrete producer. So, why don't we always entrain the maximum amount of air in concrete? It is almost a volume of free concrete... Read More

RMC Research & Education Foundation - Sustainable Concrete Plant Guidelines
The RMC Research & Education Foundation sponsored the development of Sustainable Concrete Plant Guidelines to provide the ready mixed concrete industry with a methodology for defining what constitutes sustainable plant operations. The final draft of the Guidelines was released earlier this spring and have already received a great deal of positive feedback. The next phase of the project includes a Sustainable Concrete Plant Pilot Program that will help to finalize the Guidelines. The Guidelines Participants in the Pilot Program will use the Guidelines to evaluate a minimum of two concrete plants for their level of sustainability. The Pilot Program will be conducted from May 1-July 31. Once the pilot program is completed, the guidelines will be updated to reflect the experience gained during the pilot phase. The full program will begin in fall of 2010.
If you interested in participating in the pilot program or learning more about the Guidelines, register for one of the free webinars by clicking a date below:
