Gary's profile

As we begin to enter another political season, the FICAP PAC fund comes to mind.  As mentioned in last month's In the Mix, this is going to be a very big election year.  We learned at our last meeting that the fight to defeat Amendment #4 is going to be difficult and expensive. It has never been more important for our industry and our economy as a whole to have pro-business legislators in office than now.

We have a great asset in Wade Mullins who chairs the FICAP PAC.  Wade stays well informed on what is happening in Tallahassee, as well as, who is running for office and what seats they are running for.  In addition he gives us great insight about who are the pro-business and pro-industry candidates.

FICAP and our PAC are being noticed.  Many candidates are now familiar with FICAP and know who we are and what we do.  The PAC is a great benefit to all FICAP members.  Whether you financially participate or not, you and your company are represented.

We have approximately 90 members in our association but we only have 15 members who specifically contribute to the PAC on an annual basis.  This is a critical time, and our businesses and industry need strong representation.  I know everyone's budgets are tight.  I encourage each of you find a way to free up a small amount for our PAC fund.  You can become a member for as little as $100.00.  Truly a small price to pay to help insure we have the right people in office after the election, the kind of people who are genuinely concerned and understand the construction industry.

My goal is to have a minimum of 50% of our members as PAC fund members, and I think it is an attainable goal.  Thank you for your continued support of FICAP.

FICAP PAC - The Legislative Corner                                    Wade Mullins, Chairman
Wade

Did you get a chance to meet Representatives Bryan Nelson and Scott Randolph at our January General Membership meeting? No problem. Over the next several months we plan to have other legislators stop by during our Social Hour to get better acquainted with our members. It is very hard to get many of them in one place at the same time, unless you are doing a fundraiser. Besides, meeting one or two at a time allows for more conversation about our industry and our concerns.

Speaking of our PAC efforts, have you or your company joined the FICAP PAC for 2010? There are many good candidates we need to support in 2010. Membership levels start at $100.00. There are many issues on the radar that we need to influence by helping the right candidates get elected in 2010. Read More

Because many of the items we sell are large and heavy, one of our biggest expenses is shipping. Sometimes the shipping can be as much or more than the product we sell. We've found that FedEx works best for us. By paying for our FedEx charges with American Express we get an additional 5% off.  Another benefit is that the American Express bill is so detailed that it makes it easier to track the cost of individual packages.

Reorganize your office supplies.  You might be surprised how many are tucked away in this closet or that one and completely forgotten by all.  Create one central location for supplies and make sure none are hidden in those vacant offices or cabinets.

Around The Industry
Concrete Push

As the recession takes a toll on residential and commercial construction, the Florida concrete industry is pushing for a bigger share of the state's paving projects. "During this particular recessionary period where local jobs are scare, we would like to see the Florida Department of Transportation and cities, municipalities and counties all take a very close look at utilizing concrete for paving roads, intersections, highway, parking lots - any paving that's out there," says Tim Kuebler, chairman-elect of the Florida Concrete & Products Association.

Top 25 Markets of 2010

Expect more building permits in most markets this year, but the gains will be far from historic.

You may have seen the national housing forecasts for this year, but what are the prospects where you live? We asked Hanley Wood Market Intelligence (HWMI), a sister company of ProSales, to help answer that question by forecasting how many building permits HWMI expects will be issued in the 12 biggest markets in each of four census regions. HWMI predicts the changes will range from a 255% rise in Detroit to a 28% drop in Salt Lake City. The average is a 33% increase. Read More

Sustainable Cement

As we see our industry evolving due to new government regulations and private sector roles with sustainability we need to ensure that each of us is informed and can adapt, succeed and flourish in the new sustainability era. I am sure that most of you have seen the influx of material relating to sustainability invading your inbox and many new design or build contracts. Probably the most frequently cited leader in sustainability would be LEED. Most Ready Mix Concrete Producers are familiar with how they can contribute to LEED Credits, but have they taken into account how the cement industry is also contributing to those credits?

Cementitious Products can be used in Ready Mix Concrete or in conjunction with Ready Mix Concrete to help obtain LEED-NC credits under the U.S. Green Building Council's rating system. These credits are in the material resources area and are specifically:  Read More

Stimulus Transportation Under Scrutiny

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As the anniversary of the passage of the U.S. economic stimulus plan looms and President Barack Obama presses for new jobs legislation, states and the government are assessing the impact the program has had on transportation.

"The transportation industry was the poster child of the stimulus," said Larry "Butch" Brown, president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Read More

Five Ways To Start Your Business Day Right

Five Ways To Start Your Business Day Right

We take mornings for granted. They are a new beginning-- a gift given to us each day; yet we grumble and moan as we roll out of bed and stumble through our daily routines. That kind of foggy, blase attitude can negatively influence the rest of the day.

A frustrated, cranky or indifferent attitude can plague everyone around you. Your team needs to feel inspired and invigorated, so make sure you feel the same way! Just a few small tweaks to your morning routine can set you in the right direction towards success. Read More

Fear tactics threaten one of America's greatest recycling success stories

Jan. 25, 2010, Washington, D.C. - Every year the United States produces about 70 million tons of fly ash from coal-fired power plants. This material has physical and chemical properties that make it an ideal substance for making concrete.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency promotes recycling fly ash and other byproducts of coal combustion through its Coal Combustion Products Partnership, a consortium of governmental and industry groups.  The agency identifies recycling of these materials a "national priority." Decades of sound science and practical application confirm these materials are safe and pose no threat when managed properly.  Read More

Survey Reinforces Industry Slump

Construction equipment manufacturers expect overall industry business to turn around slightly in 2010 following double-digit expected year-end 2009 declines in the minus-40-percent range for the United States and minus-30-percent range for Canada and other worldwide sectors, according to the annual "outlook" survey of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). Survey respondents then anticipate stronger growth going into 2011, but not enough to erase the severe 2009 business and job losses. Business in 2012 is then expected to level off. Read More

If you live in the State of Florida and have a driver's license, you might as well locate all of the paper trail documenting your name from birth to now.  To "prevent fraud" the State has implemented new security procedures.  Everyone who gets a new license, has one replaced (at the DMV--some lucky folks might still be able to do so online), or renews their license will need to show the following: Read More

2010 Head Shot
A grandmother was watching her grandchild playing on the beach when a huge wave comes and takes him out to sea. She pleads, "Please God, save my only grandson. I beg of you, bring him back." And a big wave comes and washes the boy back onto the beach, good as new. She looks up to heaven and says: "He had a hat!"

That's gratitude for you, isn't it?

Sometimes it takes practice to be thankful. It's easy to take things for granted.  If you can't stop right now and list at least 5 things you are truly thankful for, then you are out of practice and need some work.  In this dog-eat-dog, dismal economy, we still have much to be thankful for and we have much to appreciate.

If you need a little more convincing, read further.

In 2001 Stephen Post, a medical school professor of bioethics, created a research group called the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love, dedicated to testing and measuring the effects of love, gratitude, and other positive caring emotions in human life.

Dr. Post's research has discovered that spending 15 minutes a day focused on things you're grateful for can have the following effects on our physical health:

1. It increases your body's natural antibodies.

2. It increases mental capacity and reduces vulnerability to depression.

3. It creates a physiological state of "resonance", improving your blood pressure and heart rate.

That's gratitude for you, really. It not only lifts up the recipient, it also gives life to the one expressing it.

I was reminded recently and I wanted to share because it truly does change your life...one thank you at a time.

Thank you!
