Greetings! |

As I sit by a warm fire trying to escape this record cold weather, I began to think of what 2010 has in store for us as an industry and association. In December I recapped the many accomplishments of our association and its efforts to help our businesses and our industry. While a "what have you done for me lately?" report is important to remind us of the accomplishments of our association, as leaders and business owners we are always more concerned with what is in store in the future.
While feelings are mixed as to what will happen in our industry, it is safe to say it will be another lean year. At FICAP, however, 2010 promises to be another year full of informative meetings that will no doubt provide each of us with helpful tools to assist us in our businesses. Our line-up of meetings includes our quarterly education event in March, a presentation on antitrust guidelines, and roving meetings at two of our producer members' plants. April will bring our economic forum with the national economist from the National Association of Home Builders, and other distinguished economists. In July we return to the beautiful Sandpearl Resort in Clearwater for our annual convention. Mark you calendars now for July 14-18 as we look forward to another exciting convention.
We start off the year with a very important meeting. During our social hour we will have a "meet and greet" session with some of our legislators, giving us a great opportunity to get to know these elected officials who are friends of our industry, and express our desires and concerns directly to those who can make a difference. Our speaker for the evening is Adam Babington, legislative counsel, Florida Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Babington will be speaking on Hometown Democracy, a constitutional amendment that will appear on the November ballot in Florida. Passage of this amendment, also known as Amendment 4, will without question be devastating to our industry. Please make every effort to attend this important meeting on January 26th, and learn what you can do to help your company, your community, and your industry fight this anti-growth proposal. "All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing." - Edmond Burke
Constitutional amendment discussions, an economic forum, antitrust education, a free industry specific education event, and a fun-filled convention, all in the first half of the year. I can't think of another organization that gives its members more value for their membership dollar than FICAP. Thank you for your continued support and service to your association. Gary Clements President, FICAP |

| Cost Saving Ideas |
|
Everyone is looking for ways to save money and our members are no exception. Each month we will offer a cost saving column, as long as you the members continue to provide the ideas. We're not looking for trade secrets, but simple ways to reduce costs that you might not have thought of for your own company. Two different members offered money saving ideas for January.
1. ER Jahna - We found that at all our locations we did not need as big a dumpster or did not need it picked up but once a week. Small dollars but when added up annually and throughout the company saved us a lot of money.
2. Parliment Building Products - If you write off any bad debts, you can get a refund on sales tax paid to the state but not collected by the vendor. Advise the FICAP membership to discuss this topic with their accountants.
3. Parliment Building Products - Increase deductibles on health insurance with company providing self-insurance on the increase, making sure your health plan does not include anyone over 65. Move them to Medicare and reimburse them any cost for gap products.
Please forward any suggestions for February to the FICAP office.

Business-Mileage Deduction Rate Drops by 9%
Citing lower driving costs, the Internal Revenue Service cut the standard rate taxpayers may use for deducting mileage driven for business purposes, from 55 cents a mile this year to 50 cents starting in January.
In addition, the standard mileage rate for driving for medical or moving purposes will be 16.5 cents a mile in 2010, down from 24 cents in 2009. The rate for deducting the costs of driving for a charitable organization will remain 14 cents a mile (Congress, rather than the IRS, sets that rate.) Read More

2010 Legislative Session Will Include Corruption Reform
After a rash of corruption charges against state and local officials and other political figures, a handful of lawmakers has already filed a slate of bills aimed at cracking down on official misconduct.
Senate Ethics and Elections Committee Chairman John Thrasher, R-St. Augustine, is arguing for a move-carefully approach and not to overreact to sensational headlines.
In announcing the second of three petitions he filed with the court - the final one successful - Governor Crist has suspended 33 officials in the past three years because of corruption charges. Read More

Economic Outlook: Recovery Still on Track in 2010 Despite Uncertainties Ahead by Chief Economist Scott Brown
The economy entered 2009 in crisis mode. The financial meltdown in the autumn of 2008 led to a collapse in the real economy in the first half of the year, but monetary and fiscal stimulus helped shore up growth in the second half. The Federal Reserve provided key liquidity and lending support and fiscal policy helped limit the downside to GDP. Yet, while the recession appeared to end in the summer of 2009, the economy will not be fully healed for some time. Read More
News Media Websites May Become Pay Per View
Consumers have become accustomed to the sweet, steady flow of free news, pictures, videos and music on the internet. Now, however, there are growing signs that this free ride is drawing to a close. Newspapers, including this one, are weighing whether to ask online readers to pay for at least some of what they offer.
A handful of papers, like the Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times, already do. Indeed, in the next several weeks, industry executives and analysts expect some publications to take the plunge. Read More

I-95 express lanes coming to Broward
Construction to extend toll lanes north from Miami-Dade
When Dina Pearlman commutes to Miami, she zips into the southbound Interstate 95 carpool lane in her Toyota Prius hybrid as soon as she enters the highway from Griffin Road. But Pearlman and others like her will have to adjust their driving habits when I-95's new express lanes expand north to Fort Lauderdale. That's because access in or out of the express lanes will be restricted to a few carefully chosen locations. The Florida Department of Transportation plans to award a contract in the spring for the estimated $100 million project that will re-stripe I-95 and widen the shoulders to create an additional lane in each direction between the Golden Glades interchange and Broward Boulevard.

Second this month, cash ain't cash unless it's cash. That's from Red Scott, and he meant cash in hand is the only real thing, especially for paying bills and making payroll. We're pretty sure he never imagined how pertinent his thought would be at present, in our current economy. This is the first time in our lifetimes that credit is no longer the same as cash; up till a year or two ago, it was. Bankers and lenders had promised to stand by us, to lend us prescribed amounts under our LoC's, and now they are mostly reneging on those promises. Read More
FUNDAMENTAL OF SUPERB BUSINESS LEADERSHIP -
Jim Bleech, Parliment Building Products
I did not learn of this fundamental while in college. (I don't think many of the college professors would have been very good in the role of business leader.) Instead this is a fundamental that I have learned from observing both on the inside and the outside of the business world. No matter what the economic environment will be, superb business leadership will result in business growth and profitability. While every other fundamental is pointing down, this one, by itself, can make a difference in a company's survival and ultimate prosperity. Read More

I got nothin... Michele Stropoli, Executive Director |
|
I was enjoying dinner with friends the other day and as we were laughing and talking, the usual stuff, one of them started complaining about their co-workers. My other friend quickly jumped into the conversation and they started going back and forth with their stories. I sat there listening and wracking my brain to come up with something of my own to add, but I had nothing. I couldn't come up with a single story. In a quirky way, this bothered me, because I wondered what was wrong with me, why don't I have something to share. FICAP is a large group of people and we're tackling many projects from different perspectives and backgrounds, and yet, it works.
Which makes me think of the story of the cracked pot. Did someone send you that email during the Holiday's? I received it several times and stopped to read the story. If you're not familiar with it, it's about a pot with a crack who feels inferior to the other pots. His owner continues to use him day after day until one day the cracked pot just can't take it anymore and apologizes for wasting so much water, because half of the water leaks out before the owner can get back to his house. The owner then tells his own story. You see, he planted seeds along the path, but only on the one side of the path, and each day the cracked pot waters those seeds, without any extra effort on the owners part. Instead of looking at the pot as useless, the owner utilized his strengths and created something beautiful.
We are part of a big puzzle and each of us play an important role, flaws and imperfections included. My strengths differ from yours and vice versa. What fits is that we're part of the same puzzle and without all, the puzzle would be incomplete. FICAP is an awesome association of misfits, overachievers and cracked pots. I'm surrounded by people who look for the positive and embrace the people around them; so when friends complain about their co-workers...I got nothin. I can sit back and smile and know that I've got bragging rights. My co-workers rock!
I look forward to spending time with you on the 26th!
