Gary's profile

Is it possible that we have nearly completed another year?  2009 will certainly be a year that most of us will want to forget, but I think it will be remembered by all of us for quite some time.  We all experienced challenges in our businesses that were unprecedented and many lessons were learned.

"09" was a very successful year for FICAP.  We completed our first full year under the leadership of our new executive director, Michele Stropoli.  Our membership has stayed strong as we have exactly the same number of members now as we had to start the year, an exceptional accomplishment considering that most associations experienced member losses of 50% or more.  In addition we held a very successful and unique convention in July, continued with timely, pertinent, and free educational events like the Credit Management program in October.  We provided scholarships to five exceptional students, enjoyed two golf tournaments and a clay shoot. A new Future Leaders goal group was created, and a mentorship program was implemented in that goal group to further assist in preparing future leaders in our industry.  Your PAC was active even in a non-election year, and in February we saw the first issue of "In the Mix" our monthly e-news letter.  Additionally your association has followed the lead of its members and has undertaken a concerted and successful effort to eliminate unnecessary expenses.  While all these accomplishments were happening, most of the groundwork was laid to make 2010 a very exciting and successful year as well.  As you can see your association is alive, well, and vibrant and your membership dollars are hard at work to serve you and our industry.

Enough with the facts and figures.  It is truly a wonderful time of year.  I hope, as you are no doubt very busy during this time that you have an opportunity to enjoy the season and to spend time with family and friends.  As we search for that perfect gift for those we love, and secretly hope someone is doing the same for us, I hope all of us will seek out a family or individual who truly needs a helping hand and fulfill a need in their life.  Oddly enough it will be one of the best gifts we receive all year.  "Seek joy in what you give...not in what you get." Unknown

I wish all of you and very Merry and Memorable Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Revised 2009 Header
The FICAP PAC met recently to engage in some short term and long term planning. One of the many things discussed for 2010 was that during FICAP's January General Membership Meeting we hope to have several legislative candidates in attendance for a meet and greet. This will occur during the Social Hour.

After dinner, Adam Babington from the Florida Chamber of Commerce will be speaking regarding Amendment 4, which will be on your 2010 General Election Ballot. What is Amendment 4 you ask?  Attend the January meeting and get the answer firsthand at why this is bad for ready mix concrete and block producers.

Mr. Babington is in charge of a coalition of business interests who have been working diligently to defeat this Constitutional Amendment. The good thing is we really don't have to defeat the Proposed Amendment because it takes 60% of the total votes cast to pass a Constitutional Amendment. Do you think we can get 41% of the popular vote to defeat this bill? I certainly do.

2010 is shaping up to be very busy for Florida Politics and for the FICAP-PAC. We could sure use your support. Join the PAC today. Membership participation levels start as little as $100.00 on an annual basis. Will you help?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the FICAP PAC.

Free Cement! Everyone Wins with Limestone Addition

Drew Vermeulen, Technical Services Engineer for Suwannee American Cement.

Maybe it is not really free cement, but many people believe that the addition of limestone to cement is simply a ploy by cement manufactures to save money by diluting their product with 'filler' material. This of course is partly true but the story does not end there.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) updated their standards in the past few years to allow for up to 5% limestone addition in Portland Cement. This was not a profound advance in the cement industry. Many other specifying bodies in countries such as Canada or those in Europe have been allowing limestone addition for decades and also at much higher percentage rates. What are the positive benefits of limestone addition for the concrete producer? Read More

St. Pete Beach Abandons Local Version of Amendment 4

Since beginning a 3-year experiment with their own version of Hometown Democracy, St. Pete Beach residents have seen endless lawsuits, higher taxes and widespread economic turmoil. Recently, citizens of St. Pete Beach scaled back their local version of Amendment 4 so that only certain land use changes require a referendum. The voters chose to rein in their own local experiment by a decisive 60-40 margin.

"St. Pete Beach residents are tired of voting on everything, especially issues that don't even relate to development," said Ward Friszolowski, former Mayor of St. Pete Beach. "This amendment doesn't work. It has resulted in chaotic, confusing and expensive elections driven by sound bites rather than sound planning."  Read More

McGraw -Hill Releases Some Economic Predictions

Looking to 2010, the report predicts that firms will remain slow to hire, credit will remain tight, employment and the fiscal condition of the states will remain weak, and commercial construction starts will decline another 4%. For next year, MHC forecasts substantial growth in single-family housing (+32%), multi-family housing (+16%) and public works (+14%) construction. Growth areas will include the construction and retrofitting of federal buildings, and the construction of highways, bridges, sewer and water projects. MHC economists say this sets the stage for a "more sustained expansion in 2011." - Source: McGraw-Hill Construction

Haridopolos Is in Line to Become the Next Senate President

Sen. Mike Haridopolos will be designated next month as the in-coming president for the Florida Senate.

The 26-member Republican caucus is scheduled to meet on Dec. 8 to back Haridopolos, a Melbourne Republican, as the Senate leader for 2010-12. Assuming Republican maintain control of the chamber, a likely scenario given the Democrats have only 14 seats. Haridopolos will succeed current Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, after the general election next year. Read More

Ritchie Bros. to Conduct 2010 World of Concrete Charity Auction

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers will be conducting the World of Concrete benefit auction in Las Vegas, Nev., on Feb. 4, 2010, starting at 1:00 p.m. All proceeds support the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) post-secondary education program, developed by its National Steering Committee (NSC). Ritchie Bros. will waive its internet purchase fee for this benefit auction.

The CIM benefit auction features a wide range of donated items, including equipment, cement and sports packages. Like every Ritchie Bros. auction, the CIM auction will be unreserved, which means there are no minimum bids or reserve prices. Every item will be sold to the highest bidder on Feb. 4, regardless of price.

Last year's CIM benefit auction attracted more than 200 bidders and raised approximately $300,000 for CIM program expansion. Read More

State May get Tough on Fees

Florida's constant search for more money could mean a tougher approach to businesses that fail to file annual reports on time.

By law, the 1.2 million corporations in Florida must file an annual report with the state, which can charge a $400 fine on every company that skips the May 1 filing deadline. The state, however, must waive the fine for most businesses if the company says it never got a reminder notice to submit a report.

Last year, 136, 400 businesses requested a waiver. Read More

Michele's Family
2009 was not kind to our industry, and 2010 is still unknown, but a certainty in our lives is the opportunity to make a difference - - in our lives and the lives around us.  You've made a difference in many lives with sound business decisions, which enabled you to survive the down economy and uncertain times, both as individual companies and as an association.  Together, we've made a difference to the industry.

I have joined forces with a dynamic team of individuals who wish to make a difference to terminally ill children and their families.  I invite you to find out more by visiting My Christmas Dreams

I would also like to know what's important to you?  Please forward a link, or the contact information, regarding charitable causes and efforts in which you are involved.

This Holiday Season, I hope you take the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends. In the picture above are my children and a main reason I push forward to make a difference each day.
