CPY Bamboo is the Best!

Crystal Palace Bamboo needles and hooks are among the best on the market, if we do say so ourselves.

CP Bamboo DPN's There are many features that make Crystal Palace Classic Bamboo a choice above the rest. Bamboo is a sustainable resource.  The bamboo used to make CP products takes approximately 10 years to mature, whereas most bamboo products use bamboo that takes three to five years to mature. This makes for a much stronger finished product. The needles are put through a special autoclave process that hardens the bamboo and prevents the needles from warping. Then they are finished with a natural resin that penetrates the needle, rather than with a lacquered top coat that could chip. The needles are hand-inspected before packaging for final quality control.

The real test is to try them out for yourself.  Crystal Palace Classic Bamboo come in single-pointed needles, double-pointed needles, circular needles and crochet hooks. Visit your local or online shop and give them a whirl!

New FREE Patterns:
9 More Designs!

What busy bees our designers have been this summer!  We have nine new free patterns on the site since May.

Aria Easy Poncho We have two smashing Aria designs, the Aria Easy Poncho and the Aria & Mini Solid Long Cowl.  The Easy Poncho, designed by Sandy Blue, is delightfully drapy, light to wear and uses only four balls.  Its St st and rev St st ribbing and simple construction - two rectangles - makes this a great project for any knitter.  The Long Cowl, designed by Laura Andersson, is a snazzy accessory that uses a strand of Mini Solid to give the piece body without adding a lot of extra weight.  Wear it long or double it up around the neck.

Monaco Diamond Cowl The Diamond Lace Cowl, also by Laura Andersson and done in Monaco, is dreamy!  The silky hand and shimmery surface of Monaco is accentuated in this piece.  As Laura writes, "Monaco is a classy and elegant yarn that spoke to me of an equally elegant and interesting design. The centered diamond lace seemed just the ticket, offering a lovely lace motif that was fun to knit."  Monaco is a bamboo and rayon blend with slow-stripes that creates a unique, sophisticated fabric that is soft and shiny.  This piece uses four balls to make.

We have an addition to our doll collection.  The Cuddles 18" Doll Sweater is adorable and, as you might imagine, quick to knit.  It uses one solid ball and one print ball of Cuddles

Mendocino Shaped Shawl The most recent addition to the free pattern library is the Mendocino Shaped Shawl by Gail Tanquary.  This four-ball shawl not only looks great in soft, two-ply, slow-striping Mendocino, and it also wears quite well.  The blunt end is a comfortable alternative to the traditional point for those who do not like to sit on their shawl.  The shawl is knit from center back neck edge downward.  Yarn overs at the beginning of the row are dropped on the following row without knitting them. This allows for a stretchy edge and a small picot trim.

Shambala 8127 Shambala is a super cozy and warm bulky yarn with gorgeous slow-striping color ways.  It will be available in eight delicious shades beginning this fall.  Shambala is easy and fun to knit, with exciting color effects that can be very forgiving to uneven stitches!  It boasts a higher than usual yardage for its size (70 yd/50g), so it goes further than a typical wool bulky.  It may be difficult to think of this wooly wonder while it is in the 90's and above in many parts of the country, but you will be longing for it come fall!

Shambala Cowl We have posted several Shambala patterns in preparation for its September arrival.  Preview the Big Cable Scarf (a cozy classic), Mistake-Rib Cowl (comfy and easy, pictured to the right), Ribbed Hat (one-ball project), and the Lace-Edged Ribbed Hat (sweet and fun) to inspire you for the upcoming season.

Indie Knitting News:
HeartStrings FiberArts

Sunset Wrap in Mini Mochi HeartStrings FiberArts has been very busy as well!  Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer has three new GORGEOUS patterns now available for sale.

First is the exquisite Sunset Wrap done in the new mouth-watering "Ice Strawberry" color way of Mini Mochi. As the designer writes, "The textured beaded lace pattern stitch is reminiscent of the hues of back-lit clouds along the horizon of a beautiful sunset over a glacial lake. The beads give just a hint of light as though the last rays of sun are reflecting off wisps of clouds on the horizon.

"This infinity wrap is knit circularly as a large tube with lace eyelets worked on 5 of the 6 pattern rounds. If you have not knit lace where there is lace patterning every row, the Sunset Wrap is a good introduction. And even if you have, you'll enjoy how relaxing and fun this project is.  Because Sunset Wrap is pleasingly reversible, you can wear it in a variety of ways."

  Flames of Fall in Sausalito

Next is the equally fabulous Flames of Fall stole, knitted in Sausalito.  The design dazzles in the new fall 2012 "Harvest" color way.  Like the Sunset Wrap, the piece is enhanced with delicate glass beads, which, of course, can be omitted without compromising the delicate beauty of the design. "Beads and flames of lace endue a soft glow of warmth in this pleasingly reversible stole."  Three balls go amazingly far for this timeless beauty.  For another elegant Sausalito accessory, check out the designer's Peak-a-Bead scarf

Terzetto Victorian Mitts Lastly are the dainty and sophisticated Terzetto Victorian Mitts, designed in ultra silky Panda Silk.    "'Terzetto' is a musical term meaning a trio for instruments or voices.  Terzetto Lace Mitts are named for the threesome of lace stitch patterns used in their design. Let this trio of lace stitches sing to you while knitting and wearing these elegant near elbow-length Victorian style fingerless gloves."  The mitts look great against the Great Hall lobby of the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), as they are themselves works of wearable art.

All HeartStrings FiberArts patterns can be purchased online for immediate download or for hard copy shipping.

Indie Crochet News:
Totally Tam, Fan Shawl & 3 New Patterns in Crochet! Magazine

Crochet is finally getting its due attention in the yarn world, and CPY is happy to be a part of this exciting fashion focus on this age-old craft.  We are featuring five new indie designs this month to inspire our crochet fans.

Sunset at Red Rocks in MendocinoThe Autumn 2012 issue of Crochet! Magazine is already online, and boy is it a winner!  Among the many beautiful and varied projects are three pieces using Crystal Palace Yarns.  The As You Like It Cowl by Wendy Lewis is quick and easy and done in Mini Mochi.  It can be made two different ways: as a seamed cowl, as shown, or as an open-ended piece that can be fastened at the front with a pretty closure.  It is also the subject of our current Cowl Contest (details to the left).  The Lilac Mist Sweater is cozy and elegant.  I saw this in person at the recent TNNA trade show in Columbus, OH, and it is lovely.  This pattern is designed in our feather-light Kid Merino by the talented Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby of Shibaguyz.  The third project, Sunset at Red Rocks by Cindy Adams, is an incredibly gorgeous afghan crocheted in Mendocino.  The large trianglular motifs are interesting and fun to work.  The soft, slow color changes of Mendocino remind one of a Colorado sunset.   The issue is available now online and on newsstands starting August 4.

Totally Tam in Mochi Plus Totally Tam, designed by the talented Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby in Mochi Plus, was originally featured in the September 2010 issue of Crochet! Magazine, but is
now available for customers on e-PatternsCentral.  This fabulous and FREE crocheted hat pattern features a women's and a men's version. The women's version is a traditional tam while the men's is a slouch hat that works great for men or women.  "Crochet this darling Totally Tam which, with one basic design, transforms into two distinctive looks: a chic
Totally Tam in Mochi Plusberet for her and a cool slouchy beanie for him. An interesting ridged pattern using post stitches makes both hats plush and warm,"  as the pattern introduction states.  Susan and I had the good fortune to meet the designer at the recent trade show, who says he has more plans in store for CP yarns.  Stay tuned to the Indie Patterns section of our Web site for future Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby designs

Panda Silk Crocheted Fan Shawl (detail) Lastly is the jaw-dropping Crocheted Fan Shawl by Valerie Martin and done in Panda Silk. The Crochet Fan Shawl was created using the knit version (Panda Silk DK Fan Shawl) as inspiration.  The construction of the shawl was designed to hold true to the feel of the original shawl and as a benefit minimizes the number of ends to weave in.  This is a classic piece that will enhance any wardrobe.  Oh, and did I mention this was FREE, too?

CP Bamboo hooks Among our many yarns suitable for crochet (the Mochis, Panda Silk, Cotton Chenille, Cuddles, Merino 5, etc.), we also carry beautiful bamboo crochet hooks in sizes D3 to L11.  These hooks are made of the same top-quality brown bamboo as the Classic Bamboo needles.
