Introducing

Indie Patterns

on our Web Site!

Lightning Shawl in Mini Mochi

We are happy to introduce a brand new section of our Web site devoted to independent designs using Crystal Palace Yarns.  Now when you go to our Web site, you will notice Indie Patterns in the navigation bar at the top of each page.  These patterns are a mixture of free and for-purchase patterns from many talented designers, including Nicky Epstein, Lily Chin, Frankie Brown, Susan B. Anderson Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer and many more.  Each page in this section will include a picture of the project, some general information (materials used, etc.) and links to where you can access or purchase each pattern.

We think this new section will complement our free pattern collection beautifully.  We will be adding more and more patterns to this Indie Patterns section, so please check in regularly for new updates.

TuTu, Moonshine & Monaco: NOW AVAILABLE!
TuTu
Three of our new Fall 2011 yarns are now available in shops!

TuTu is our new ribbony yarn that is proving to be quite a hit!  It comes in six prints and three solids and is very affordable.  TuTu is great as a stand-alone yarn or used with another as accent.  See our free TuTu patterns on our Web site.
Moonshine in
Moonshine is a kid mohair blend with metallic highlights.  Add a touch of elegant bling to your wardrobe with this beauty.  It knits up to 4.5-5 sts per inch.  We currently have two free Moonshine patterns up on our Web site, with more on the way.
Monaco in

Monaco is a delightful blend of silky bamboo with a rayon boucle.  This 3.5-4 sts-per-inch yarn is the ultimate in drapiness!  It is shimmery and lovely, and good for anything from scarves to sweaters.   See our free Monaco patterns on the Web site for inspiration.

Check your local yarn shop or see one of our online dealers to get your new fall CPY!

New Free Patterns:  Moonshine, Moncao & more...

Monaco Skimmer Hat Our designers have been quite busy lately working on pieces for our Fall 2011 yarns.  We have six new free patterns up on our Web site since the last issue of Purls, including two Monaco projects and a dazzling Moonshine scarf.

The Skimmer Hat, designed in Monaco by Laura Andersson, is a fun, quick knit designed for advanced beginners.  It features a lettuce edge and twisted rib, and it uses two balls.

The Big Cable Scarf, also out of Monaco, is fun and drapy.  It uses just two balls of Monaco and features a long, wide center cable.  It is a great project to take on for learning cables!  Check out a similar version of the scarf in Chunky Mochi as well.

Moonshine Cable Panel Scarf Next is the lovely Moonshine Cable Panel ScarfMoonshine is the perfect yarn for this drapy, dressy, lacy scarf.  The flecks of gold in the yarn add a sophisticated amount of bling to jazz up the cool months.  Moonshine in this project works up into a beautiful, elegant fabric.  This scarf uses three balls.

The Lettuce Cable Hat, designed  by Laura Andersson in Chunky Mochi, is a fun little morsel.  Warm and wooly-soft, this Chunky hat works up quickly and is adorable to wear.  Only two balls are needed.  It is an excellent project for both beginning cable-knitters and seasoned knitters who want a quick project.  It makes a great gift, too.

The Chevron and Cable Slouchy Hat and Collar is a great set designed by Gail Tanquary out of Merino 5This hat and matching collar looks like something straight out of the Irish countryside. The hat features a 2 x 2 rib and basic 6-stitch cable with dramatic decreasing for a slouchy, beret-style hat. The flared collar features the same 6-stitch cable, picot bottom edging, chevron eyelet design and top ribbing. Both pieces are worked in the round. Merino 5 is superb for stitch definition, and one of my personal favorites. It is a 5-sts-to-the-inch, machine washable high-twist merino wool.

http://www.straw.com/cpy/patterns2/MochiPlus-miter-vest.html The art of layering is in full swing on the runways and on the streets.  The Mitered Square Vest, designed by Gail Tanquary in Mochi Plus, is a soft and cozy vest using mitered-square construction for the bottom portion and garter-stitch panels for the top.  This can be combined with a t-shirt or long-sleeve, jeans and boots, or added on top of a dress or skirt ensemble for extra warmth and interest.  It uses seven to nine balls of Mochi Plus.

We have many more designs coming soon, so stay tuned for the next issue!

Indie News: "80's Love" in Tangled Online Magazine
A-Ha Shawl in Mini MochiThe Summer 2011 issue of Tangled Online Magazine is currently available online.  The theme of this season's "bi-craftual" collection is "80's Love".  All the projects are socks or use sock-weight yarn, in celebration of last month's Sock Summit held in Portland, OR.  Each pattern is cleverly named after an 80's rock band, with a trivia blurb about the band in the left margin.  80's style is back, and Tangled does a great job of using both knitting and crochet to pay tribute to the decade.  Crystal Palace Yarns is featured in two of these rock-star projects.

A-Ha, designed by Holly Chayes, is a stunning circular shawl made from Mini Mochi, with concentric self-striping rings and easy-to-follow lace.  It may look daunting, but the pattern is rated at an "Easy" level, so do not be afraid to give it a try!  The piece measures 44" in diameter and takes seven balls to make.

Bon Jovi Socks in Panda Silk The Bon Jovi socks are totally awesome!  Crocheted out of Panda Silk, these socks designed by Anastasia Popova are comfortable and fun, great paired with low tops or pumps and tights.  They are worked from the toe up, and the heel is worked at the end.  Panda Silk is a dream to work up and even dreamier to wear.  These socks are rated as "Intermediate" and use three balls total, two balls of the main color and one of the contrast color.

For those of you who are not familiar with Tangled, it is a unique online magazine that gives equal attention and pattern support to both the knitting and the crochet arts.  The "bi-craftual" projects they feature in each issue are stylish and fun.  Viewing the magazine is free, with patterns available for individual purchase.

Mini Mochi in Time on My Hands E-Book
Grandfather Clock Gloves in Mini Mochi Time on My Hands is the new e-book by designer Becky Herrick, which uses the subject of time to inspire projects in this fun new PDF-formatted book.  The Grandfather Clock glove pattern, made from Crystal Palace's Mini Mochi, is an excellent choice for beginner glove knitters.  The color changes keep the gloves fun and interesting while working the basic ribbed cuffs and Stockinette stitch hands.  Sized for both men and women, these gloves make great gift knitting, too.  Remember with Mini Mochi, glove, mitten and sock patterns will often yield frateral pairs rather than identical, due to the positioning of the long stripe repeats.

The e-book contains nine total glove, mitten and wrist warmer patterns. The patterns will be released one or two at a time per month.  Customers can buy individual patterns for $4 each or purchase the entire set for $18.  You can see more about the book on the Time on My Hands Ravelry page.

Shop Display Contest Reminder
Whose local yarn shop has the coolest, most beautiful Crystal Palace Yarns display?  We are running a contest for yarn shop owners who carry Crystal Palace Yarn products.  We have asked our yarn shops to enter a photo of a unique Crystal Palace Display by September 15.  After that date, we will start a public voting process.  There will be links for you to cast your vote for the best display on our Web site, Ravelry and Facebook.  The prizes are for the yarn shops, but we are sure your LYS would love help and input from the fans of CPY.

So get your shops involved and be ready to vote starting September 16th!
