Greetings!
Happy summer! We are just back from exhibiting at TNNA's, the National Needlework Association's, summer show in Columbus, OH. Here we met with many of your local yarn shop owners to show and sell our new fall line of yarn. We are so excited for our new fall yarns, and we are happy to give you a sneak peek of these tasty bites. We have a total of four new yarns, Mendocino, Monaco, Moonshine and TuTu, all of which will be available in shops in September. We also have new colors in Cotton Twirl, Merino 5, Kid Merino, Little Flowers and Party Ribbon. We have new free patterns in this issue, including a Cotton Twirl baby pattern for summer, as well as two gorgeous indie features from Crochet! Magazine and Heartstrings Fiber Arts. And we continue the knit-a-long fun with another KAL on the Crystal Palace Ravelry Group. There are prizes to be won, so do not miss out! Sincerely,

Mendocino: Fall 2011 Sneak Peek!
Mendocino is one of the four new yarns that Crystal Palace is offering for fall. A cousin of the fingering-weight Sausalito, this two-ply, worsted-weight delight is beautiful, soft and wears well. One ply of slow-striping yarn is plied with a second solid ply that makes for a pleasing visual effect: the yarn colors are varied with mergers of solid colors and a marl effect where contrasting colors meet. It is made from the same 80% machine-washable merino wool and 20% nylon content as Sausalito. The yardage is 97 yd/50g. It comes in 10 lovely color ways and knits up to 4.5-5 sts/ inch on US 7-8.

Monaco and Moonshine: Fall 2011 Sneak Peek!
This year we are adding a little sparkle to our collection. Monaco is made of silk-like, slow-striping bamboo yarn wrapped with an elegant rayon boucle for stability and pizazz ( 44% rayon/ 34% bamboo/ 11% nylon/ 11% acrylic). Monaco comes in 10 color ways. The put-up is 55yd/50g and knits up to 3.5-4 sts/ inch on US 9-10. The hand is silky soft and smooth, and it drapes beautifully. Monaco is due to arrive in shops in September.
From the same mill as our Kid Merino comes the flashy and fun Moonshine, a kid mohair blend with metallic highlights. Each ball packs a lot of yardage: 135yd/50g. It comes in eight printed colors and two solids. It knits up to 4.5-5 sts/inch on US 7-8. Moonshine is due to arrive in shops in August. See all four new yarns from Crystal Palace, TuTu, Mendocino, Monaco and Moonshine, on our website, and stay tuned for free patterns as well! |
Cotton Twirl, Merino 5, Kid Merino, Little Flowers, Party Ribbon: New Colors in Shops NOW!
One thing you must understand about Crystal Palace is that we LOVE color. Each season is an opportunity for us to add hip and fresh colors to our existing yarn lines, and this fall is no exception.
Cotton Twirl is a great choice for cotton projects requiring a 4-4.5 sts/inch gauge, and we have added 14 new solid colors to Cotton Twirl. Cotton Twirl is a 90% cotton/10% elastic nylon textured yarn which is enjoyable to work up. The small elastic content makes Cotton Twirl hold its shape beautifully. These new colors are in shops now, in time for creating summer projects.
Merino 5 is a superb, 100% machine-washable, multi-plied wool which is a pleasure to knit or crochet, and we have added 12 new "Team Spirit" themed shades to the Merino 5 lineup. These are available in stores now so you can get a head start on your 2011/2012 sports knitting and crocheting!
These colors have all arrived and are in yarn shops now! |
Cotton Twirl and TuTu: New FREE Patterns!
We have added more free patterns since the last issue of Purls. Arella, designed by Linda Iwaszko of Mrs. I's Yarn Parlor in Osceola, Wisconsin, is an adorable baby dress made from contrasting colors of Cotton Twirl. It works up quickly and features a gathered waist, seed stitch edging and waistband and flower buttons or applique. I think this dress is simply darling! And because of its basic shaping, Stockinette stitch body and seed stitch accents, this is recommended for advanced beginners and beyond. Try this dress with selections from the new solid range of colors of Cotton Twirl.

Even though TuTu is not yet available, we have already posted some patterns on our website to tempt you in preparation for its arrival in August. The TuTu Boa Scarf, recently added to our website, is a beauty! Dramatic and expressive, this pattern is simple and showcases the effect of the our new TuTu yarn beautifully. Put this on and you are instantly transformed into a diva extraordinaire. It moves fast and uses only two hanks of TuTu, which makes it a very affordable, glamorous project. TuTu has a unique way of working up, and there will be instructions on knitting TuTu on the inside of the yarn label, as well as on our website.

We have found that Cotton Twirl and TuTu work very nicely together. The TuTu and Cotton Twirl Scarf uses one ball of each. You can experiment with many different color combinations to suit your fancy. The TuTu and Cotton Twirl Baby Hat, with ruffled edge and eyelet-accented crown, works up sweetly and quickly. You only need a fraction of a hank for the trim, and less than a ball of Cotton Twirl for the crown. (Check Ravelry for TuTu Sparkle! and TuTu Fun!, two new scarf/shawl patterns from indie designer Diane Augustin. TuTu Sparkle! combines TuTu and Cotton Twirl, while TuTu Fun! combines TuTu and Plus Solid. Both of these are downloadable for purchase from Ravelry.) Do not forget about our other Cotton Twirl patterns on our website, like Squares Baby Blanket, Fishy Toy and Victoria Lace Vest.

Indie News: Panda Silk in Crochet! Magazine

Elegant and sweet is the Right-Angle Wrap, designed by Andee Graves and available in the July issue of Crochet! Magazine. Made from our dreamy Panda Silk fingering weight yarn, this project will add extra flair to summer outfits. We had a chance to see this project first hand at TNNA, and it is indeed lovely. As described by the designer, "This wisp of a shawlette is created with a 90-degree center angle that helps it sit securely across the shoulders. In cooler weather, the piece can be snuggled up as a scarf under a jacket." This intermediate-level crocheted piece uses H and I hooks and only two balls of Panda Silk.
Crochet! Magazine is a publication of DRG Publishing. The July issue is now available in yarn shops and book stores.

Indie News: Peek-a-Bead Scarf in Sausalito!
Sausalito is proving to be a great yarn for elegant, lacy scarves. The gorgeous Peek-a-Bead Scarf by Jackie Ericson-Schweitzer of Heartstrings Fiber Arts is a perfect way to show off Sausalito's beauty. The eyelet and diamond design is accentuated with droplets of beads nestled at the base of each diamond. This project is recommended for advanced beginners because of its small and fairly easy row repeats, but is equally as appealing to more intermediate and advanced knitters as well who want a project not requiring a lot of concentration. The pattern is available for sale through Heartstrings Fiber Arts. See more Heartstrings patterns in Crystal Palace Yarns here. |
