We Have a Winner!
Chunky Mochi and Bamboo Needles
You may have noticed that we have a new name for our CPY fan newsletter.  Thank you to Rita of Pittsburgh, PA who entered the winning title "Purls from the Palace."  In fact, two other contestants also coincidentally entered the winning name, but since Rita was the first to enter, she wins the Grand Prize of $150 in CPY merchandise.  We are awarding Cathy of Oakland, CA and Jessica of New Orleans, LA each a $50 runner-up prize for entering the same title.

Thank you to everyone who submitted entries for the "Name our Newsletter"contest.  It was a lot of fun, and I hope everyone enjoyed participating!

Greetings!

Hello, CPY fans!  I hope you all are enjoying the fall with your needles a-clickin' and your hooks a-twirlin'.  And speaking of hooks and needles, this month we wanted to focus on one of our greatest and long-time products, Crystal Palace Classic Bamboo.  The knitting needle/crochet hook market has expanded quite a bit since we first introduced our bamboo, but our Classic Bamboo needles and hooks continue to this day to be some of the highest quality you can buy.  Every CPY fan should experience the warmth and ease of our treasured bamboo.

We have a slew of free patterns ready for the taking and many fun free and for purchase indie patterns as well.  I have included yarn and needle information after each pattern so you can better prepare for your next CPY project.

And if you have missed either of the first two issues of Purls, you can now view them on our new Archive page.

Happy yarning!

Sincerely,
Cathy Campbell

Crystal Palace Bamboo:
A Classic for the Savvy Knitter
Cutting Bamboo
Harvesting the Bamboo

For over 20 years, Crystal Palace has
been selling the highest quality bamboo needles on the market.  In my early years of knitting, I was happy to use any needles I could get my hands on:  aluminum, wood, plastic, unfinished bamboo.  But after I tried Crystal Palace Classic Bamboo, I knew I would never go back.

& Bamboo Crochet Hooks

There are many features that make Crystal Palace Classic Bamboo a choice above the rest. First, it takes approximately 10 years for our bamboo to mature, whereas most bamboo products use bamboo that takes only three to five years to mature. This makes for a much stronger finished product.  After the needles are cut down to size and cured in the sun, they are put through a steam autoclave process that prevents the needles from warping. Then they are shaped, sanded and finished with a natural resin that penetrates the needle, rather than with a lacquered top coat that could chip. The needles are hand-inspected before packaging for final quality control.  Read more about the process on our website...

Crystal Palace Classic Bamboo come in the following single-poi

Child's Dragon Rib Hat in Chunky Mochi
Child's Dragon Ribs Hat

Since last newsletter, we have added six new free patterns to the website.  First is a cute hat designed by Laura Andersson.  The Child's Dragon Ribs Hat in Chunky Mochi is a child's version of the original Dragon Ribs Hat which was released in August.  This is a one-ball project and a great choice for a quick, inexpensive but packed-with-love gift.  This project uses one ball of Chunky Mochi, 16" circular and 8" double-pointed needles size 9 (or size needed to obtain gauge).

Topsy-Turvy Cowl in Mini Mochi

Also in the "quick gift" category are three new cowl patterns, the Topsy-Turvy Cowl, the Sidestepping Cowl and Fan Stich Cowl #2.  Topsy-Turvy, designed by Laura Andersson in Mini Mochi, is something of a sampler project, using bands of various stitch patterns and the elegance of Mini Mochi to produce a beautiful neck warmer.  It can be worn with either end at the top.  It is also the subject of the current

mentioned below.  The Sidestepping Cowl, also designed by Laura Andersson, is made out of Panda Silk DK and features a 2 x 2 diagonal rib for flexibility and visual interest.    The Fan Stitch Cowl #2, designed by Susan Druding in Chunky Mochi, is a soft, loosely-knit cowl featuring a feather-and-fan stitch.   Topsy-Turvy uses one ball of Mini Mochi and 16" circular needles size 7.  Sidestepping Cowl uses one ball of PSDK and 16" circular size 6.  Fan Stitch Cowl #2 uses two balls of Chunky Mochi and 16" circular needles size 13.

Pinwheel Blanket in Puffin
Pinwheel Blanket

The Pinwheel Blanket, designed by Gail Tanquary, is a darling pattern knit in cushy soft Puffin, which with its bulky gauge can turn out a throw or baby blanket in relatively no time.  It uses miter construction in garter stitch, embellished with a crocheted (or knitted, if you prefer) edge.  This project uses nine balls of Puffin, 26" circular needles size 13 and crochet hook size K (optional).

Girl's Ballet Shrug in Mochi Plus
Child's Ballet Shrug

The Child's Ballet Shrug out of Mochi Plus is a version of the two by the same name made out of Bunny Hop and Cotton Twirl.  It is a cute vest-shaped shrug designed by Gail Tanquary that would look great with a glitter t-shirt, jeans and a pair of boots.  (Hey, I want one of these!  And it just so happens that I am in luck.  An adult version will be available soon.)  The pattern is sized for girls ages 4-10.  This project uses three to five balls of Mochi Plus and 26" circular needles sizes 8, 10 and 10.5 (optional for bind-off).

Rodekool Brioche Scarf in Knitty.com

Knitty.com continues to be a popular stop for novice and savvy knitters alike, full of stylish free patterns.  The Rodekool Brioche Scarf is a spectacular scarflet pattern in the current "Deep Fall" issue.  This is a gorgeous and unique design by Nancy Marchant, author of the recently released book, Knitting Brioche.  Brioche knitting creates a double-layer, making a reversible piece.  The project uses just one ball of Mini Mochi, worked from both the inside and outside of the ball.  You can view technical tips on the designer's website.  This project uses one ball of Mini Mochi, circular needles (any length) size 5 and double-pointed needles size 5.

Ann Norling's Pattern #49

Ann Norling Designs are classically beautiful.  Their simple, well-made construction make her garments as desirable to wear as they are to knit.  Recently, she has added a Chunky Mochi version to her multi-gauge Pattern #49, Kid's Buttom-Up Raglan Sweater. This is the sweater a child will wear often, the go-to garment whenever he or she is headed out into the cool air.  This is an incredibly versatile pattern, offering a variety of styles, gauges and garment sizes.  This project as shown uses six balls of Chunky Mochi, 16 (26)" circular needles sizes 8 and10.5 and 8" double-pointed needles sizes 8 and 10.5.

In the Land of Oz Shawlette

Adrienne Fong's Shawlette

Adrienne Fong, otherwise known as Bellybutton Knits, is a gifted designer and great supporter of Crystal Palace Yarns.  Among her collection of beautiful designs is In the Land of Oz, an "elegant crescent-shaped shawlette (that) features a stockinette center and an easy to memorize 'peacock' lace border to add a touch of fun. Best of all, you can knit this with that special skein of 'sock' yarn that is just too luscious for walking on."  She has made several different versions of it, including the Mini Mochi one pictured above, and one using a combination of Mini Mochi and Mini Solid, using a whapping two balls.  It also works up beautifully in Panda Superwash and Panda Silk.   This project uses two balls of Mini Mochi and 35" circular needles sizes 7 and 8.

Diane Augustin's Chunky Mochi Scarf

And be sure to check out the Chunky Mochi Scarf by Diane Augustin for purchase on Ravelry.  It is a three-ball scarf that knits up quickly for a soft and warm accessory for fall.  Diane works for Lila & Claudine's, a retail yarn shop in Old Mahtomedi, MN.  Diane was immediately inspired when the shop received its Chunky Mochi shipment and had to design this lovely piece.  Diane uses her publishing background and love of fiber to create beautiful patterns she hopes "will enhance your knitting or crocheting (and beading) experience. This project uses three balls of Chunky Mochi and 9" single-pointed needles sizes 11.
