This Year in Social Justice
Our lives are filled with milestones: birthdays, weddings, first dates, graduation, first day of school, first day on the job and so many others. Many are personal and special to us bringing treasured memories.
As a society, though, we have milestones as well; some joyous; some historic; some momentous; some tragic and often they leave indelible marks on our psyches and on our lives, creating impact on many of us or just, perhaps, for smaller groups of us.
Looking back on the year 2011 we saw the anniversary of many milestones with a social justice impact. The list above gives a brief snapshot of how social justice issues impact our lives from bullying to terrorism to the continued recognition of a national legend to the repeal of "Don't Ask-Don't Tell" legislation.
Social Justice - the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within a society - brings forth many issues which are part of the fabric of our lives. Some ignore the impact of social justice in our lives but matters of equity and fairness touch our lives in many ways - in our classrooms; our housing; where and how we shop; where and how and if we enjoy recreation; in our workplaces and many more.
Some people choose to ignore these issues or dismiss them, but we suggest that is shortsighted given the changing demographics in our state. Today, New Jersey is 40% diverse according to the Census. Issues of fairness and advantage vs. disadvantage continue to come to the forefront because we are so diverse. America is diverse as well and both state and nation struggle to find the balance of a free and fair society for all.
That's why it's important to look back occasionally and see just how far we've come on these issues; so we can measure our progress and begin to chart a course for the future.
After all, our Pledge of Allegiance does say "with liberty and justice for all."
