Generational Diversity
Here we are in a very diverse society and we find ourselves with not only racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation and ability status diversity in our workplaces, but also generational diversity.
That's something we've not really thought about in the past but as so many live longer, experience difficulties relative to the economy or simply have the desire to stay active, there is a new generation remaining in the workforce.
This presents unique challenges for companies in terms of employee to employee and employee to supervisor/manager relationships and communications. How does work move forward in a smooth and productive way? How do we navigate inter-generational issues which crop up during the course of the work day? In fact, according to Lee Hecht Harrison, 60% of US corporations acknowledge workplace tension among generations. That's where management training, skill-building, coaching and creative thinking come to the foreground. The richness of our diversity is captured in the enthusiasm, experience, energy and know-how that multiple generations can bring to our companies.
Here is some generational information:
· Matures ( Traditionalists)-Born before 1945
· Baby Boomers - Born between 1946 thru 1964
· Generation X - Born 1965 thru 1979
· Generation Y (Millennials) -Born 1980 thru 2000
Each generation has a unique set of values born of their milieu, life experiences and the historical events of their generation. Let's think about those experiences and values as we work with, partner with, observe and have lunch with our colleagues. We all have something valuable to contribute to the workplace. Best Places to Work harness all that power. It's the Power of Diversity!
