DID YOU KNOW?

A Diversity Council is a "group of people within an organization who lead, advocate for, coordinate, inform, and/or monitor the Strategic Diversity Management process. Highly productive diversity councils can have a multiplying effect. Council Members can assist with data gathering, can assist in the communication process, will be involved in establishing measures, help educate employees about diversity, and continually reinforce the company's commitment to the diversity process."  (http://www.prismdiversity.com)

Employee-resource groups (ERGs),  also called affinity groups or employee networks, are "company-sponsored employee groups from traditionally underrepresented groups or those that support these groups."  Unusual ten years ago, in 2010 all of the DiversityInc Top 50 had ERGs and all were funded by the company.

ERGs should be open to all employees, complying with the organization's anti-discrimination policies and applicable law. (http://www.hrc.org/issues/workplace/diversity/4832.htm)  They can be a beneficial resource to a company, including serving as a resource for the employees they represent, a source for coaching and mentoring, a means of connecting to diverse consumer markets and a tool for attracting and retaining talent.  (http://www.prismdiversity.com/products/employee_diversity_groups.htm)

In 2010, 46% of DiversityInc Top 50 companies had a generational employee-resource group.  Five years ago, no one had one.

Diversity Councils - A Driver for Successful, Inclusive Companies

Over time, many companies have learned that a powerful way to enhance and build Diversity and Inclusion within their companies is the creation and support of a Diversity Council.

With a "charter" from the top of the organization, the Diversity Council is the forward-thinking group of employees who personally value diversity and express that very same company value through their participation and by serving as leaders and guides on issues of Diversity and Inclusion throughout the company.

Who best to take this role than committed, diverse employees who have the ear and participation of top company leaders as well as employees as they help to focus efforts and shine a spotlight on the many aspects today's diverse companies experience? Their efforts help move the company's values agenda forward.

With focused and realistic goals mirroring company values, employee leaders can make a difference in how successful their company is relative to these issues.  Goals and activities should be relevant, meaningful and measureable.

With support from diversity professionals within the company, Diversity Councils can make the most meaningful contribution to moving both Diversity and Inclusion forward.

In fact, the value placed on Diversity Councils by major corporations has led medium-sized companies and national and statewide non-profit organizations to develop them as well.

The most successful companies consider their Diversity Council a key component, along with Employee Resource Groups (also known as Employee Business Groups or Councils), to achieve their Diversity and Inclusion goals - a measure of company values and commitment and a Best Practice to be sure.
