DID YOU KNOW?
Volunteerism

Companies
often encourage employees to volunteer with community organizations such as the American Conference on Diversity. The Independent Sector places the monetary value on volunteering at $20.85 per hour.  (Indepentdentsector.org)

In 2009, approximately 26.8% of the adult American population volunteers an average of 8.1 hours of service. However, New Jersey ranked #47 in the volunteer rate of its residents in the years 2007-2009.(Corporation for National and Community Service)

Some studies suggest ethnic differences in the type of organization in which people choose to volunteer. Using the 2005-2007 Current Population Survey's Annual Volunteer Supplement, John Foster-Bey found that "blacks appear to be more likely to vounteer with religious organizations than either whites, Aisans or Latinos.  On the other heand, Latino appear to be more likely to volunteer in educational and youth service organizations than blacks, whites or Asians." (J. Foster-Bey. Do Race, Ethnicity, Citizenship and Socio-economic Status Determine Civic-Engagement? 2009)

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

That's a good question because many of us choose to donate our time to organizations serving many disparate sectors of our civic, community and religious life here in New Jersey.

Here are some thoughts to consider as you decide to become or remain a volunteer.  I'll call it my Top 10 Best Guidelines for Volunteering.
  1. Believe in the organization's mission.
  2. Feel that you can live the mission as well as donate time to the cause.
  3. Be an Ambassor for the organization - introducing its work & needs to others.
  4. Share your time to meet your needs as well as the organization's to avoid disappointments on both sides.
  5. Work with the organization's professional staff as a resource and guide for your participation.
  6. Be sure there is a good fit with your skills and interests and the organization's needs.
  7. Introduce others to volunteering.
  8. Donate financial resources to the best of your ability if you can. There is always a need.
  9. Feel the passion for the work of the organization.
  10. Enjoy your experience!
To the many who volunteer with the American Conference on Diversity, we appreciate your time, talent and support.
