DID YOU KNOW?
Our Future Leaders

The 2006-08 American Community Survey estimated that:
  • One-third of NJ households hadchildren under the age of 18
  • There were almost 500,000 children in grades 9th - 12
  • There were another 560,000 students in college and graduate school.

In the 2008-2009 school year, there were more than 1.38 million children in NJ's schools.NJ Department of Education

Data from the 2010 census should be able to add to the significance and importance of our youth in our communities and their schools.

The Power of Youth Leadership

I am so proud of the important work we do with the young leaders in NJ. From high school to college and university settings, we are creating and implementing programs which educate and empower our future leaders - your future employees, neighbors and friends.

In the most diverse state in the country, this is powerful "stuff."

It is important for all of us to understand and value the richness of NJ's diversity because this is a great strength for our state.  A powerful and well-educated workforce, led by leaders who understand the value of communicating with one another and appreciating one another's differences, will yield the most successful  businesses and communities.

Ask the high school student delegates to Lead for Diversity. Each year, hundreds of students impact thousands more (36,000 last year!) through Action Plans to improve human relations in their schools and communities.

Ask the participants of the Campus Leaders' Program who are working and leading the efforts on their campuses to create and expand inclusive learning and social environments.

Ask the school districts with which we've worked. They "get it" for sure.

What better legacy to leave than to know that your support, your interest and your insight into the value of diversity is being passed along to a powerful group of young leaders?
I do believe that one person can change the world and the Youth Leadership Institute creates the atmosphere, programs and climate for learning that will enable these leaders to build and secure a more inclusive society as they experience their life's journey.

It's a journey which begins with the next generation of leaders. As we say, "It is a journey we can take together."
