What is the Value of a Diverse Workforce?
Sociologist Cedric Herrig found that
-
"a workforce comprised of employees of both genders and varying racial backgrounds resulted in positive business outcomes. "
-
companies reporting the "highest levels of racial diversity brought in nearly 15 times more sales revenue on average than those with the lowest levels of racial diversity," and
-
Professor Scott Page in a 2008 interview in The New York Times, stated, "Diverse groups of people bring to organizations more and different ways of seeing a problem, and thus, faster/better says of solving it." ( NYTimes.com) Page's mathematical model demonstrates that heterogeneous teams consistently out-perform homogeneous teams on a variety of tasks. The goal is to manage diversity to take full advantage of diversity. (Page, S . The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups, Firms, Schools and Societies. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press. 2007.) Companies that have diversity training are more likely than their counterparts without diversity training programs to:
-
"report higher productivity than their competitors"
-
"report better business performance than their competitors," &
-
"report that their employees believe procedures for determining promotions are fair." ( Henderson, Washington and Watkins-Butler. Training for business success: does diversity training improve productivity, performance, and fair promotions? University of Illinois at Chicago. Nov. 2008)

| COMMENTARY | |
Valuing a Diverse Workforce How fortunate we are in NJ to have such richly diverse communities and workforces!
What does that bring to our business and community life?
We have the advantage of having a highly educated workforce (the best in the nation) which includes native New Jerseyans and people who come to us from across the country and around the world. That brings an interesting perspective to business development, team management and leadership as well as marketing efforts; all viewed through the lens of different cultures, races and ethnicities.
Our clients, customers and neighbors bring their unique qualities, knowledge and gifts to all sorts of business opportunities and community issues which, ultimately, enhance the outcome.
When we consider the purchasing power of so many diverse groups of people in our state, the need to work together respectfully and the opportunities and experiences that all of us can bring to common social and business issues, NJ businesses are learning that all of this diversity is something positive.
We are the better for it.
