DID YOU KNOW?

In 2008, NJ was among the top ten states in multi-culutral buying power and among the top ten states with largest consumer markets for the following groups:
  • African-Americans ($35 billion)
  • Asian ($32 billion) and
  • Hispanic ($36 billion) (The University of Georgia, Terry College of Business, Selig Center for Economic Growth)
According to 2008 Census estimates (quickfacts.census.gov) 14.5% of NJ's residents identify as black, 16.3% as Hispanic or Latino and 7.7% as Asian.

Recently relesased updated US Census Bureau figures estimate the total US population to climb to 399 million by 2050, with whites making up 49.9% of the population. Blacks will make up 12.2%, virtually unchanged from today. Hispanics, currently 15% of the population, will rise to 28% in 2050.

COMMENTARY

Diane Schwartz The Numbers Speak for Themselves

The purchasing power dollar figures above are impressive and instructive.  They really do speak for themselves as to one of the measureable, powerful impacts of diversity on our lives as well as our economy.

It is our neighbors, co-workers, customers, clients and friends who have become a powerful force.  These numbers are shared to demonstrate the impact that our diverse society has on all of us.

If that is the case, it behooves us to recognize the value each of us brings to each other - as people, as community members and residents of New Jersey. The growth projection of our state's diverse population is strong and so is the increased purchasing power

If the numbers speak for themselves - we should learn to speak for each other.  Soon, New Jersey will be a "majority of minorities."  The term "minority" won't even apply to any one group. All of us - every color, race, ethnicity and culture will not produce a major group in our state.

Times are changing.  The 2010 Census should provide interesting numbers for us; verification that we are really only just beginning our diversity journey.
