IN APPRECIATION for Lori Jeffreys
As many of you already know, Lori Jeffreys has been a fixture in the nursery for as long as anyone can remember. She has been coordinating our nursery care since she was a teenager.
This Sunday we will be showing our appreciation for her many years of service with a special time of recognition during worship, followed by cake afterwards. Sunday will be Lori's final day as paid staff as the responsibilities of this position will transfer to our new Director of Children's Ministries/Preschool Director, Kim Erickson on August 1st.
As you join us for worship on Sunday, please find Lori and extend your own personal expression of gratitude and appreciation for her ministry among us.

CONGREGATIONAL SURVEY
At last night's meeting, the session discussed Amendment 10A and how we should move forward as a congregation. In light of our discussions and particularly the input we received at the special session meeting last Sunday, we have created a very brief nine-question survey that will be available online from August 1st through August 21st. The purpose of this survey is to gauge the congregations feelings on this issue. A separate email will be sent to all members and friends on our News You Can Use distribution list with a link to the survey. And another link will be available on our website.
To ensure that the results of the survey reflect the thoughts and opinions of our congregation, it will be necessary to enter your name and phone number on the survey, however, your anonymity will be preserved. Your name and phone number will be removed from the survey results prior to its distribution to the session. Your responses will remain anonymous.
People who have limited or no access to a computer will be accommodated. Elders will be available in the office after worship on August 7th, August 14th, and August 21st to assist people in completing the survey using the volunteer computer.
The next regularly scheduled session meeting will be held on Thursday, August 25th at which time the session will review the results.
Thank-you in advance for your participation in this survey. We greatly appreciate and value your input.

Several items that have been identified that they hope to purchase with these funds are : Bibles in Spanish, age-appropriate Sunday School materials, pens, pencils, crayons, shoes for the children, plastic chairs and other items as the need is observed.
Total Red Wheelbarrow collection from July 10, 17 and 24: $2,283.83! Of that amount, $244.97 was collected during the week of Vacation Bible School. |

SAM'S ALERT: PACIFIC BEACH Mark your calendars for the SAMs gathering at Pacific Beach Conference Center scheduled for September 9, 10 and 11. This year we will have a buffet dinner (see menu on signup sheet in the narthex) on Saturday evening the 10th at 6pm that will be in the "Ocean Mist Room". The cost for this dinner is $18.95 per person plus $3.50 gratuity. There are no fees for the room as long as everyone partakes of the buffet. The dinner needs to be paid for with your deposit. To confirm your reservation, please pay for the dinner ($18.95 + 3.50 gratuity per person) and your first night's stay to Ed Sutherland (make checks payable to Ed Sutherland). RV Sites are $20.00 and the Motel Rooms are $50.00. Please pay this money before August 1st to insure a spot. At the end of July we will still be able to add or remove reservations as needed although to add sites after that may mean that motel rooms/hookups may not be available for the late comers (dry camping for RV's) so sign up early. The signup sheet and menu are posted on the SAM's board in the narthex. Past attendees are listed so you only need to indicate your wishes for this year by filling in the yes/no box on the list. If your name isn't listed, please enter your name and all pertinent information on an open line at the bottom of the list. You also may call or email 253-927-1339 or eddiesutherland@comcast.net to confirm your reservation. |
Stewardship Update
Dear Friends,
As you can see from the chart below, for the month of June, Regular Offerings continued to run less than the projected budget by $5,177. At $6,822, Other Income (consisting mostly of rental income) was also less than the budget of $9,052 by $2,230. The rental issue is no doubt a reflection of our economic hard times as at least one of the congregations using our building is unable to meet their contracted rent. Fortunately, Ordinary Expenses of $35,068 for June also ran less than the budgeted amount by $6,636 as committees did their best to hold down costs and postpone projects.
The Year-to-Date income for Regular Offerings was $21,438 below that budgeted. Total Year-to-Date Income was less than the amount budgeted by $29,826. Year-to-Date Expenses were less than the budget by $26,786, but, in spite of less spending, the actual net loss for the year is $24,447, which is of some concern.
We recognize that many might be experiencing unexpected financial challenges that could affect giving. However, if you are withholding your giving because of your discontent with recent changes in our denomination, please realize that this only affects our congregation and not the Presbytery, Synod, or General Assembly. The only funds sent to them from Steel Lake are the per capita amounts (based solely on our active membership list). Even if members choose not to include the per capita amount in their giving, Steel Lake must remit the total amount to Presbytery each year. All pledged offerings and undesignated Other Income are deposited into our General Fund for the worship, programs, staff and outreach of Steel Lake Presbyterian Church and, as you can see, we are slowly losing ground.
As of July 28, 2011, our Session approved reducing the 2011 expense budget by $19,208 (the amount of projected interest we expected to pay this year on the Synod Loan; which we already paid in full). This reduction moves us very close to a balanced budget; however, our actual expenses are still running more than our actual income which still leaves us with a net loss to date.
So we thank you all for the love and loyalty you have for Steel Lake and, if it is at all possible, we prayerfully ask that you support our mission and ministry by helping us stay on a firm and stable financial foundation.
