Young Life

YOUNG LIFE MALIBU WORK CREWS

Once again, SLPC has the opportunity to serve Young Life (YL) work crew members on their way to and from Camp Malibu in British Columbia.  As we did last year we will again provide these disciples with a place to rest their heads and a "Grab and Go" breakfast as they travel to and from Malibu.  A "Grab and Go" breakfast is defined as something like Costco muffins, fruit, milk/juice, water, coffee, etc.  There are about 80 workers each time. The dates we will serve breakfast to the work crews are as follows-

Thursday, June 23

Saturday, June 25

Monday, July 18

Wednesday, July 20

Sunday, August 14

If you wish to donate to this effort (time, money, or supplies) please contact Lou Olmstead (253-517-3095)  or May Isaacson (253-335-5772).

Trinity Sunday Trinity Sunday Recolored

As we celebrate Trinity Sunday  this coming Sunday, we proclaim the mystery of our faith in the triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, One-in-Three and Three-in-One.

Unlike other festivals in the church's liturgical calendar, Trinity Sunday centers on a doctrine of the church, rather than an event. It celebrates the unfathomable mystery of God's being as Holy Trinity. It is a day of adoration and praise of the one, eternal, incomprehensible God.

Trinity Sunday, in a sense, synthesizes all we have celebrated over the past months which have centered on God's mighty acts: Christmas-Epiphany celebrating God's taking flesh and dwelling among us in Jesus Christ; Easter celebrating Christ's death and resurrection for us; Pentecost celebrating God the Holy Spirit becoming our Sanctifier, Guide, and Teacher. It is, therefore, a fitting transition to that part of the year when Sunday by Sunday the work of God among us is unfolded in a more general way.

"RESURRECTION" RUMMAGE SALERummage Sale
The eighth annual "Resurrection" Sale is nearing!  Yes, it is that time of the year where one person's throw away is another person's treasure.  For these past eight years our sale has gone from fund raiser focused to a focus on community outreach.  As you know, the economy has struggled in recent years and we have found that the donations received from our gracious congregants have found their way into the homes of grateful people that can continue to put these items to good use.  Please consider donating your goods as well as your services during this year's Resurrection Sale.  This event is a true sign of God working in us and among us.  Contact Rod Woods (253-854-3837) or Sandy Florence  (253-874-0479) for your opportunity to be a part of this great event.

A churchwide letter concerning the new Form of Government

LOUISVILLE

To congregations of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

While it is not official until the Office of the General Assembly receives notification from presbyteries that have voted, it appears that, as of June 7, 2011, the proposed new Form of Government (FOG) has been approved by a majority of our 173 presbyteries.

The new FOG will replace the current version within the Book of Order of the church's Constitution on July 10, 2011, one year after the adjournment of the 219th General Assembly (2010). The print edition of the new Book of Order will be available by late July.

The new Form of Government at its core

A new section, Foundations of Presbyterian Polity, which contains the vast majority of the first four chapters of the current FOG, will also be added to the beginning of the Book of Order. Within it are these words:

In the power of the Spirit, Jesus Christ draws worshiping communities and individual believers into the sovereign activity of the triune God at all times and places. As the Church seeks reform and fresh direction, it looks to Jesus Christ who goes ahead of us and calls us to follow him. (F-1.0401)

The foundational message of the saving love of God through Jesus Christ is timeless. The writer of Hebrews reminds us, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (13:8). And yet, when the Spirit has moved the church to respond to "the sovereign activity of the triune God," the church has, in turn, worked to reshape itself to do so effectively.

While the new Form of Government will help the PC(USA) to be a faithful and responsive church in the 21st century, it also has a dimension of bringing us back to a truly constitutional document that contains broad governing and theological principles and emphasizes function over structure.

What will change?

Many Presbyterians will see nothing suddenly or dramatically different with a new Form of Government. Worship services will go on as usual, and congregations will continue to teach the faith, serve their communities, reach out to those in need, and work to further God's realm on earth. However, what will be different is that congregations, presbyteries, and synods will have the opportunity to tailor mission and ministry to fit their own particular contexts and challenges.

The new FOG will also usher in changes in terminology. For example, ministers of the Word and Sacrament will be known as teaching elders, partnering in ministry with ruling elders who serve on the congregation's council (session).

It is a season of much change in the church, and change is often accompanied by anxiety. Making the transition from the current Form of Government to the new one will take time, patience, and grace. We will all be living gradually into these new dimensions of the church's governance. We commend to you the resources and guides at http://oga.pcusa.org/formofgovernment for assistance, including the "Frequently Asked Questions" document that accompanies this letter. Further resources will be made available over the course of the summer to help with this transition.

The best resources through this transition, however, will be each other. A new Form of Government puts all of us on the same page, as it were. Through conversation, cooperation, and collaboration, we will discover the most effective ways to move forward into this new and exciting chapter of the life of the church.

In the end, as affirmed in the Confession of 1967, "The church ... orders its life as an institution with a constitution, government, officers, finances, and administrative rules. These are instruments of mission, not ends in themselves" (9.40). The mission remains the same: to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed, and to work for the reconciliation of the world. With God's help, may this new Form of Government enable us to be ever more faithful to that mission.

In Christ,

Deacon's Corner

by ROSE RATTERAY, Deacon

Steel Lake is adjusting to changes around us as well as changes within our church family. As you probably know, Karen Dick has been Director of Steel Lake Christian Preschool for nearly 15 years and retired at the end of the school year.

Karen has been a dedicated and hard worker managing the students, staff, dealing with parents, vendors, and regularly reporting to the Session. Her unwavering loyalty, dedication, and commitment has helped the preschool flourish. Today's preschool is different from the preschool of years ago.

When the little ones enter SLPC they are met with a curriculum which encourages personal as well as academic growth as they are prepared for Kindergarten. They participate in traditional Pre-K areas but in addition they are gently taught academics which are necessary for them to succeed in elementary school. They also learn about God, Jesus Christ and how to live the Christian life. Karen and her staff show Christ's love as they guide the children following principles found in the Bible.

As Karen retires we wish her every joy in this new chapter of her life. We also hope she will stop by to visit us as her leaving, although good for her, is still painful for us.

There is a rainbow for us as our Coordinator of Youth Ministries, Kim Erickson, assumes the position of Director of Preschool. So as we say good-bye to Karen we extend a warm welcome to Kim and to Sara Franklin who replaces Kim as Coordinator of Youth Ministries.

God bless Karen, Kim and Sara and give them wisdom in their new undertakings. May He richly bless each of them and may they feel His presence daily.
