CALLING ALL MEN!

Father's Day on June 19 is fast approaching and as we have done in the past, we'd like to form a men's ensemble to sing in worship that day. Even if you're not regularly a member of the choir, you are invited and most welcome to join the ensemble. Rehearsal will be held immediately following worship on June 12 in the sanctuary, with a warm-up rehearsal before worship on June 19. Questions? Talk with Jeshua Franklin or Joe Moine.

OFFICE HOURS FOR JULY AND AUGUST

For the months of July and August, the office will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 4pm and closed on both Mondays and Fridays. The office will once again be open on Mondays after the Labor Day holiday, starting September 12th.

Young Life

YOUNG LIFE MALIBU WORK CREWS

Once again, SLPC has the opportunity to serve Young Life (YL) work crew members on their way to and from Camp Malibu in British Columbia.  As we did last year we will again provide these disciples with a place to rest their heads and a "Grab and Go" breakfast as they travel to and from Malibu.  A "Grab and Go" breakfast is defined as something like Costco muffins, fruit, milk/juice, water, coffee, etc.  There are about 80 workers each time. The dates we will serve breakfast to the work crews are as follows-

Thursday, June 23

Saturday, June 25

Monday, July 18

Wednesday, July 20

Sunday, August 14

If you wish to donate to this effort (time, money, or supplies) please contact Lou Olmstead (253-517-3095)  or May Isaacson (253-335-5772).

News You Can Use - June 9, 2011

Pentecost Sunday

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday and we will be focusing on John 7:37-39, the text where Jesus stands up in the temple on the last day of the Feast of Booths and says, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'"

On this Sunday, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit.  And as part of this celebration, the congregation is invited to wear Red

Amendment 10A

Some of you may be wondering what the session thinks about the passage of Amendment 10A (see letter from our denominational leaders) and what opportunity there will be to discuss the issue of ordination standards in the Presbyterian Church (USA).  The session has assigned a small task-force to this question.  They are drafting two documents for the session:  one that highlights all of the implications of the amendment's passage and one that describes all of the possible responses available to Steel Lake Presbyterian Church.  This task-force expects to complete these documents very shortly and present them to session at its next meeting on June 30th.  The session will examine the documents, discuss the implications and the options and try to lay out a way forward.  We will keep you posted as things develop.

Music StaffSummer Singing & Fellowship

Mark your calendar for two summer-time hymn sings: Wednesday evenings July 6 and August 10 at 7 pm in Starkey Friendship Center. Bring finger food to share together after the singing.

In the church I grew up in we had singings on Sunday evenings usually once a month. It was a standard event and we rarely missed. Different people would take turns organizing any of the necessary details, sometimes choosing a theme, sometimes making more of a formal program and sometimes just inviting anyone to call out a hymn. We always sang in the fellowship hall, sitting in a circle, and, as is the tradition of conservative Anabaptists, we always sang a cappella. The church had sets of half a dozen different hymnals, ranging from a standard Sunday-morning type hymnbook to some older gospel hymnbooks, a shaped-note singing school book, and even (much to my father's chagrin) a "country & western Christian songbook." We'd rotate through the different books from month to month.

Singings are some of my favorite church memories from childhood. I suppose that might seem natural coming from me, but I think singing together as the family of God goes much deeper than simple musical giftedness or appreciation. Singing is a very vulnerable thing to do. It's a kind of fellowship with each other that is different than sitting together, or eating together, or talking together. It's something that can be very special.

So mark your calendar, and come join the music and the fellowship. We were gifted with a used but good condition baby grand piano that will reside in Starkey, and this will be our first chance to break it in!

Farewell from Karen Dick

The fourteenth year of Steel Lake Christian Preschool is now over.  The students have left for summer break and the rooms in the preschool are quiet.  It was a good year, as all fourteen years were, and God used the time to bring joy and the light of His presence to everyone who came through the doors.  We are thankful as this is also a time of transition for the preschool.  Even though I am leaving as director, the preschool will continue on and will always appreciate the support of the congregation.

I would like to use this time to say thank you to the Steel Lake congregation for a wonderful reception for me and the preschool ministry on May 8.  I appreciated the acknowledgement of the work in the preschool, the kind words that were said, the wonderful and generous gifts that were given to me and the lovely reception.   I also truly appreciated the kindness and warmth that everyone showed to me.  Thank you.

It is hard to believe that fourteen years have passed by since we started the preschool in the corner of Starkey Friendship Center with seven students.  It was a delightful and exciting time when this ministry was just beginning.  As the preschool grew over the years with God supplying every need, it was a time of growth, not only in the preschool, but in my spiritual life as well.  God helped me over and through many bumps along the way and was always faithful.  Many people from the congregation came alongside me and gave me the support I needed and I am grateful.  Steel Lake and the preschool ministry will always hold a special place in my heart and I will never forget my time here.  Thank you for allowing me to serve in this church in this way.

I will continue to pray for the preschool ministry and Steel Lake Presbyterian Church.  I wish you God's richest and most abundant blessings always.

KAREN DICK

Preschool Celebration

On Thursday May 26, the sanctuary of Steel Lake was the scene of a joyous occasion; the Preschool end of the school year celebration. The children, led by Director Karen Dick , teachers and teacher's aides, welcomed parents, grandparents, family members and friends to see them participate in a program of songs, Bible verses and to see a brief video.

The children calmly walked into the sanctuary and took their place upon the steps where they prepared for their recitation. Elder Trent Erickson, whose daughter Kate participated (as did Pastor Anderson's daughter Miriam) gave the opening prayer and officially welcomed all. Karen also welcomed all and led the children through their presentations. The program went very smoothly and culminated with the awarding of certificates.

Our two students from SLPC, Kate Erickson and Miriam Anderson, beamingly received their certificates. Incoming Director Kim Erickson paid tribute to Karen's 14 years of service and wished her well in retirement. At the conclusion Elder Erickson invited those without a church home to consider joining SLPC as they would find a warm welcome and hear the Word preached faithfully. He closed with prayer and everyone went to Starkey Friendship Center for a lovely reception.

TO OUR SLPC FAMILY

The month of May was consumed with Art's hospitalization and then his transfer to Judson Park for rehab therapy. He worked 3 hours or more each day in rehab to get stronger. He came home the first of June. This is an answer to our prayers.

Art and I wish to thank all who have helped us so much. The great meals delivered by "you know who" - many thanks. A special thanks to Ron Perrone and his assistant, who built a ramp for Art and installed it. We couldn't do it without you all. We are so grateful.

-Art and Gloria Riggs
