Bending Pipe or Tube
We are often asked when bending tube or pipe, do I need a mandrel ?
Unfortunately there is no easy answer to this question. A machine with a mandrel extractor system will be more expensive and complicated than a draw bender but the simpler draw bender may be able to bend the part but may not provide the tolerance you need.
There are many factors that need to be considered such as the wall thickness, diameter, material type, the bending radius or CLR (center line radius) and the tolerance.
For example a 2" mild steel tube with a wall thickness of 16ga. will require a mandrel if the CLR is anything less than 7". Over 7" we can bend the tube with out a mandrel. To bend the same tube at a 4" CLR , the wall thickness would have to be at least .125". If the material is stainless steel instead of mild steel, you would need at least a .150" wall thickness to bend it at 4" CLR. Sometimes the material or CLR can be simply adjusted from the original design of the part in order to use a draw bender rather than a mandrel bender.
