Tinkerbelle's Tips

PREDATOR CONTROL

Is your pond becoming the neighborhood lunch wagon or a playground for furry and feathered friends? Hughes Water Gardens offers these suggestions:

Fishing for Herons:  Criss-cross fishing line above your pond 7 feet or higher with about 3' in between.  This will make it harder for humans to see but the heron will be deterred for fear of entanglement.

Heron Replica (decoy):  Herons are a territorial bird and if they think they see another bird they may stay out of the area.  Important: The more realistic the replica the better. (Herons are smart and skilled hunters). Regular relocation of the replica is necessary for the same reason.

Gazing Globes:  Non-breakable floating gazing globes are placed in your pond so heron see their reflection. This causes the heron to believe another heron is nearby and leave.

Pond Dyes:  Pond dye not only helps with algae control but it also makes it harder for predators to see your fish. The disadvantage: it is harder for you to see your fish as well! We have black and also blue dye choices that can be very attractive in your pond.

Construction and Planting Techniques: Making your pond deep with straight sides can help fight predators.  Raccoons can swim but prefer not to. Herons generally like wading into the pond. Both prefer an easy lunch. By providing an abundance of plants and or rock caves, your fish can hide.  Plants however can become a play toy for raccoons.

Traps:  Humane traps for raccoons can be effective. The question is where do you relocate the animal after you capture them?  Your neighbors out in the country will not appreciate any donations.

Scarecrow: This is a battery powered, motion-activated impact sprinkler. It simply connects to your garden hose. This has proven effective for both heron and raccoon.

Hot wire (electric fence): This is by far the most effective method for racoons. By placing one or two low voltage wires around the perimeter of the pond you will build an almost impenetrable fortress for your valued plants and fish.  Of course, there are a couple of downsides (figures!).  First if you are not careful humans and pets might experience the low voltage charge.  Secondly you will have to adjust to the new visual aesthetics of the pond. In plain language, it just does not look quite as nice.

Still not sure? Come in and the staff at Hughes Water Gardens can assist you.

Sedum, Sempervivums and Jovibarba

sempervivum 1

Sempervivum arachnoidum 'Pittonii"

Sedum, Sempervivums and Jovibarba are durable garden plants requiring very little care. They are perfect for the end of the summer "heat" and come in fabulous colors and textures.  However, they produce the best color in the spring. They generally need very little water and soil so they work perfectly in that hard to plant rocky area around your waterfeature.  They also look fabulous in containers  (funky containers are the best). They are becoming the plant of choice for the very popular Living Walls and Green Roofs.

Sempervivums - or "Hen and Chicks" ha

sempervirum 2

Sempervivum Icicle

ve a great

evergreen structure with their beautiful rosette leaves.  They come in outstanding colors that vary from reddish to grayish green. Each rosette "Hen" propagates by producing lateral offset rosettes "Chicks". The main rosette will grow several years before flowering, then after producing a flower that is starlike and usually reddish, yellowish and sometimes white, the main rosette will die and the "chicks" will take over.

Jovivarba

Jovibarba sobolifera

Jovibarba are very similar to Sempervivums - they

usually have a wonderful rosette form that is evergreen.  The flowers are pale-greenish yellow or yellow flowers with six petals.   Like Sempervivums the main rosette is monocarpic and dies after it blooms and then the offsets takes over. Many of the Jovivarba are classified as rollers meaning that the offsets break loose naturally from the main plant and roll to a new location. Jovivarba's have amazing fall colors making them even more sought after as a garden plant.

Sedum 1

Sedum confusum

Sedum or Stonecrop is comprised of about 400 species and are very diverse. Many are evergreen groundcovers, some are reliable perennials, and all have excellent color, texture and form.  The flowers usually have five petals  and come in  variety of colors. They require very little care and can tolerate poor soil and dry locations in full sun or light shade depending on the variety.

Autumn Joy and the very popular Angelic sedum are easily recognized and are valuable garden plants.  There are many varieties to choose from.

Come check out Hughes Water Gardens great selection of Sedums, Sempervivums and Jovivarba.

Hughes has on display the Waterlily of the Year

Nymphaea 'Wanvisa'

 wanvisa 2

Nymphaea 'Wanvisa' was discovered in Thailand by Dr. N. Nopchai Chansilpa growing among a pond full of yellow waterlily Nymphaea 'Joey Tomocik' . It is the first hardy waterlily to win the International Waterlily & Water Garden Society's Best New Waterlily competition. Past winners of the New Waterlily competition have always been day-blooming tropical waterlilies. The flowers are pink with white streaks and held well above the water surface. The foliage is also unique as it is mostly red-brown with green spots.

If you come for a visit be sure and see the Wanvisa waterlily. Hughes has this remarkable waterlily on display in the hardy waterlily greenhouse and it is looking awesome. In the future we hope to have the Wanvisa available for sale to the public.

Warm Weather Alert

Take special precautions when using algaecides during the  summer, when the temperatures reach  the 90s to 100+ degrees.  They can become harmful to your fish by depleting the oxygen in your water, which is already in short supply when the weather is warm.  It is best to skip your treatments until the temperature cools or use a beneficial bacteria product instead.
