Hughes Water Gardens customers are always excited when the Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce are available in late April early May (weather permitting).

Our customers know that floating plants are a great filter for your pond and should keep the pond clear all summer.

Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce are  tropical plants that need the water temperature to be above 65 degree consistently before you add them to your pond.

Annie loves to create Waterbowls.  She loves to work small and the challenge of keeping thing in scale.  Creating a mini ecosystems that will bring in wildlife such as frogs and damselfly fascinates her.  She also love the instant gratification.  In an hour you can have a beautiful mini pond in you yard.

 waterbowl 3

Below are a list of the plants used in her fairy water bowl pictured above.

Eriophorum angustifolium / Cottongrass

Narrow blades of light green. Produces soft, white cottony tufts. Enhanced graceful motion and form with group plantings.

Height: 1' - 2'

Single yellow flowers and deep green leaves with scalloped edges.  One of the first plants to bloom in spring.  Best if planted in a cool, shady location.
Part / fall shade  Spring blooming.

There is nothing better at creating a healthy ecosystem. A must for water clarity in waterbowls. Hornwort is a free floating plant with whorls of delicate forked leaves on slender stems.  Simply place the plant in the waterbowl to float freely.  Excellent oxygenator.

Fairy Moss / Azolla sp.

Tiny free floating plant.  Soft, green fern like leaves turn purplish red in fall.  Provides rapid shade cover in new ponds.  Helps reduce algae.  Can be charming in a water bowl.

Iris ensata / Japanese Iris
An excellent pond plants.  Lots of wonderful colors. full sun/ part shade. Hardy perennial.  Blooms late spring.

Be whimsical you can anything to your favorite waterbowl.  The picture above includes one of Hughes collection of Garden Fairies.

Waterbowl Tip:  One of the most often asked question about waterbowl is "do I need to have moving water to help with water clarity".  Moving water definitely helps.  However with the right combo and number of plants you can create an self sustaining environment without moving water.

Algae - The Ultimate Green Fuel

AlgeaAll pond hobbyist know algae can grow really fast. Given the right conditions it can double its volume overnight.  All it needs to grow is water, sunlight and carbon dioxide.

Did you know that 50% of Algae weight is oil that can be used to make biodiesel and ethanol.  Both are a much cleaner burning fuels than petroleum based diesel or gas. It can yield between 10 to 100 time more energy per unit than other biofuel crops.  5,000 to 20,000 us gallons per acre year, 7 to 30 times better than the next best crop.

Algae can be grown in ocean water and waste water freeing up or fresh water resources and it is biodegradable and relatively harmless to the environment if spilled.  Algae can also be grown on land that is not suitable for other established crops,

Currently there is a lot of research into using algae fuel to replace our dependency on fossil fuels.  Some predict that by the year 2017 Algae fuel will have a  price parity with oil.

Next time you are fighting the algae in your pond considered that in the not to distant future it could be powering our cars and supply energy to our homes.  For more on algae as a fuel click here.

As a side note Duckweed is also being researched as an alternative fuel.

Several of our customers have asked us to include what Eamonn has been designing and building in our construction division and include it in the newsletter. Here is the first of many projects:

WATER FEATURE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

PROJECT PROFILE:    DUNDEE WATER GARDEN

This garden was built to provide a tranquil oasis for a very busy couple who lead quite stressful lives. Once we had completed the feature and turned on the waterfall pump all the hubbub noise of everyday life melted away and we were transported to the side of a brook in the Cascade Mountains. The streambed originates in the front entry and then wraps around the house to the pond.
