Biological and Mechanical Filters
Proper filtration for a pond includes the use of both biological and mechanical filters.
A biological filter provides surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize on. Beneficial bacterias remove excess nutrients from the water. Excess nutrients feed algae.
A few examples of good biological filters are:
- Creeks with a lot of rocks for suface area for bacteria to colonise on.
- Waterplants
- Manufactured Bio -filters. Such as a gravity 50 gallon barrel filter or a pressurized filter.
A mechanical filter removes the larger debris such as leaves and needles from the water.
Examples of mechanical filter are:
- A prefilter for your pump.
- A net over the pond.
- A net for skimming the pond.
- A skimmer installed on the side of the pond.
A skimmer usually houses the pump therefore acting as a prefilter. They will also skim debris from the water's surface to prevent the accumulation of organic materials.
