Sarcacocca - Himalayan Sweet Box A Great Plant for Winter and Spring Fragrance

Sarcacocca is a very under appreciated and used plant. It is a small slow growing (just 6" a year), evergreen shrub that almost does it all. It grows in the shade (yes, it does well in dry shade), it has tiny white blooms that are incredibly fragrant in the winter/early spring, and it has shiny black/red berries in late summer. It is a very easy plant to use around the garden in a Pacific Northwest.
Hughes carries two varietes:
Himalayan Sweet Box (Sarcacocca ruscifolia) grows 3ft wide and tall has fragrant white flowers in early spring followed by red berries and deep green, wavy edged leaves.
Dwarf Himalayan Sweet Box (Sarcacocca hookerana humilis) only gets 12"-18" tall. This plant can be used well as a ground cover in shade. It has blue-black fruit after the fragrant white flowers.

Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Variegatus' Variegated False Holly
Another great plant for winter interest around the pond is Variegated False Holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Variegatus"). This plant looks like holly but is better behaved. It is a slow growing, evergreen shrub that get 4 to 5ft tall and wide. It has a delicate small white flower in autumn that is sweetly fragrant.
Variegated False Holly likes full to part sun. It lneeds regular watering, but does not like to be over watered. It is hardy to zones 7-9. If you would like a more formal look you can shear it to shape after it flowers.
Variegated False Holly looks great all year and is well worth having around your pond. It also looks great in pottery for holiday decor.

Autumn Blooming Camellias
This fall at Hughes we have Autumn blooming Camellias. Camellia are wonderful shrubs for all year interest. They have dark green glossy leaves and flowers in red, white, yellow (we sold out of the yellow - it was fabulous) and pink. They generally get 6 to 8ft tall and wide and can be pruned to shape right after they bloom.
Camellias like slightly acid, moist but well drained soil. They do best in dappled shade.
