Tinkerbelle's Pond Tips
Tinkerbelle Hughes
Warm Weather Alert
Take special precautions when using
algaecides during the summer, when the temperatures reach the 90s to 100+ degrees. They can become harmful to
your fish by depleting the oxygen in your water, which is already in
short supply when the weather is warm. It is best to skip your
treatments until the temperature cools or use a beneficial bacteria product
instead. Remember Sunshine |

Garden railroad of Odell & Hazel Lee. |

Through July Rose City Garden Railway Society is graciously setting up a fabulous miniature garden train for Hughes to help celebrate our Waterlily Festival and Art Show towards the end of the month.
Miniature garden trains have something of interest for everyone, be it trains, flowers or ground covers, miniature water feature, miniature buildings and figures or creative vignettes that spark the imagination.

Waterlily Festival & Invitational Art Show Artist Showcase Susan Frohnmayer
Susan Frohnmayer is a northwest photographer who has been actively
photographing a wide range of subjects for over fifteen years and
professionally for five years. She has a passion for close-up photography
but has created a portfolio that includes running horses, landscapes,
and nature images. She says, "it is a journey and the destination keeps
changing."
Her work is hanging in many homes and has been shown
in local art shows, hospitals, businesses, and most recently in a
permanent collection in a physician's office and a cancer clinic at a
Portland hospital. She likes to put together a selection of images that
create a mood or evoke a feeling of peace and calmness in stressful
settings.
Susan also designed this year's Beautiful Waterlily Festival Poster.
"It is the love of beauty and spirit that inspires my
passion for photography. Everywhere there are wonderful images, very few
are ever captured. When it is possible to record a moment in time and
place that warms the heart or speaks to the soul it is truly a gift.
Sharing those moments with others gives me great pleasure and
satisfaction." -Susan Frohnmayer

Egyptian Papyrus with a Red Banana | From statuesque to diminutive,
this family creates
"A Penchant for Papyrus"
When you think of papyrus,
you may think of Egypt and papyrus "paper" festooned with colorful paintings, but did you know that papyrus is also beautiful water garden plant?
This dramatic plant gives a tropical feeling to a
Water Feature. When combined with the large leaves of Canna lilies and
Elephant Ear Taro you can have a Tropical Paradise! Break out the
Barbecue and Tiki Torches! We have many varieties of Papyrus of various heights and hardiness. One
example of a large Papyrus is the Egyptian Papyrus, which reaches heights of 6 to 10 feet. For a smaller selection, we have Dwarf Papyrus that grows 1 to 2 feet tall. Most papyrus have to be brought
into the house for the winter, however one of the hardier
varieties is the Umbrella Palm, Cyperus
alternifolius. Unlike most Papyrus, this variety can be over-wintered outdoors with protection.
There is a Papyrus for everyone here at Hughes
Water Gardens.
