Water Hyacinth

The water hyacinth has attractive foliage setting off its spire of orchid-like blooms but its real value in the garden pond is as "clean up crew". More and more is being learned about this plant's ability to filter out impurities in water and it is playing an important part in water purification projects world-wide.

If you have at least 4 hours of sun on your pond but not getting good bloom check for these common causes:

Root bound: Is your water lily in the same pot you bought it in? Then it is past due for a larger pot. For detailed information on repotting your water lily stop by our store or click here to go to our website.

click here for information on how to plant water lilies.

Lack of Fertilizer: Water lilies are very heavy feeders and need to be fertilized monthly during the growing season for best bloom. We use and recommend Pondtabbs Aquatic Plant Food.

Turbulent Water: Water lilies need to be grown in calm, still water. Too much splashing from a water fall or fast moving water near a stream can even kill a water lily.

Attention Hughes Water Garden's Pet Lovers
PAWS

cat 1For the first time in her life, Niki Atterbury, our retail manager, found herself without a cat. This could not go on!  So, with much excitement and joy, she adopted a cat from a truly wonderful shelter in the Willamette area of old West Linn, PAWS animal shelter. It was a truly wonderful experience and we would highly recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a loving addition to their family.
Paws is unique, in that the cats roam freely throughout the
shelter. They become well socialized with each other, visitors
and shelter volunteers.

PAWS Animal Shelter is a non-profit cat adoption center in West Linn, Oregon. Our mission is to place as many homeless cats and kittens into loving, caring homes. In addition, we aim to educate pet owners, especially children, about proper care for their pets. We opened our doors on June 6, 1999 and have since found homes for over 1,000 cats, 45 dogs, 1 rabbit, 2 turtles, 1 pigeon, and a miniature horse. We invite you to come visit us and see all the beautiful cats available for adoption. They would certainly like to meet you!
