Floating Plants
Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce
Each spring at Hughes Water Gardens, customers wait with great anticipation for the arrival of Water Lettuce (Pista stratoides) and Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). They generally arrive in April or early May, depending on spring water temps.
Water Lettuce and Water Hyacinth are free floating tropical plants that are the most effective of all water plants for removing excess nutrients, therefore starving out algae.
Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce are tropical plants and are treated as annuals in this area. They can be placed in the pond once the water temperature has reached 60 degrees.

Tinkerbelle's Pond Tips
Tinkerbelle Hughes
Why a Water Feature is Better than a Lawn.
1. You don't mow a pond once a week. 2. Ponds attract more wildlife. 3. The sound of water is therapeutic. 4. Fish are cool! 5. A water lily is better than a dandelion any day.
6.There are many
different and lovely plants you can grow in your pond. 7. A pond and waterfall is much more relaxing. 8. A water feature is artistic. 9. You don't have to water a pond. 10. No crabgrass! 11. Frogs are cool and they eat bugs!
12. A water feature is better for the environment. 13. Watching grass grow is never exciting.

"STEPABLES®" The pond is done; the rocks are in place; but...the edges look so bare..... Never fear.... STEPABLES® are here!
Are you wondering how and what to plant around your newly completed pond? STEPABLES® are ground cover plants which are very well suited to this purpose. They soften and naturalize the edge, making the pond look like it has been there for years. Two of the best are the moss-like plants, Scotch Moss, Sagina subulata 'Aurea' (chartreuse) and Irish Moss, Sagina subula ta (emerald green). Mosses can thrive in very little soil so they are perfect between the stones around the pond. Both like a brightly lit, cool place. Provide a place with moisture and good drainage.
Scotch Moss
Thymes are other favorites. They are tough plants, able to withstand full sun and little water once established. There are lots of choices with Thymes and we have many in stock. Lemon Thyme smells, not surprisingly, like lemons. Wooly Thyme is fuzzy with a lovely sage color. Doone Valley Thyme also h as a lemon scent with green and yellowish foliage. Most Thymes have lilac blooms in the summer. They are not only wonderful between rocks, they are good between pavers on a patio.

For a nice woodland look New Zealand Brass Buttons, Leptinella squalida is priceless. It provides a fern-like covering in soil or between rocks. This plant enjoys a cool, moist, brightly lit area. Two other Brass Button relatives are Miniature Brass Buttons Leptinella gruver i, which has tiny serrated leaves and is very compact, and Black Brass Buttons, Leptinella X 'Platts Black' which has noteworthy bronze/black foliage.
Brass Buttons Check out our charming purple and green Bronze Dutch Clover, Trifolium repens and purple hued Stonecrop, Sedum hispanicum minus 'Purple Form'.. For early blooming there is 'Victor Reite' Arm eria with plump pink Dianthus blossoms held on green stalks above a mossy type crown. Of course, everyone's favorite, Blue Star Creeper, Isotoma fluviatilis has dainty blueish star-shape flowers. Dutch Clover All of the groundcover plants we sell are excellent container plants. They look beautiful spilling over the edge of a container (or rock wall around a pond) and compliment taller perennials, ornamental grasses and shrubs. Speaking of ornamental grasses, we have the "perennial" favorites (pun intended), Black Mondo Grass and golden striped Carex aurea 'Variegata'. My personal favorite "STEPABLES®"is the Australian Violet, Viola hederacea. Small and shiny green leaves are a great backdrop to the gorgeous bicolor white and purple flowers. Australian Violet These plants are but a small sample of the many "STEPABLES®" in stock now with more yet to arrive. Blue Star Creeper |
