UV Lights and Green Water

Are you tired of green water and using chemical after chemical to combat algae?  Ultraviolet (UV) lights are great for treating green water and reducing pond maintenance! UVs are generally easy to install and very energy efficient.  Two factors to consider when choosing a UV light are the size of your pond and the water flow rate the UV manufacturer recommends.   These units should operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the warmer seasons. The bulb should be replaced yearly. Though the bulb will appear to be working,it will become less efficient with time. Winterizing is easy - just remove the unit and place it in your garage or shed until late March.  Keep in mind UV lights are great for treating green water algae but are unfortunately not effective for string algae.

Building our Backyard Sanctuary

Customers Jon and Debbie Russell Talk About Building their Pond Last Summer

Did you do lots of research?
My toms picturewife & I were looking for a "centerpiece" to our backyard.  After being blown away by the beauty and tranquility of the water features at Hughes Water Gardens our minds were made up.  A pond it is!  A little Q & A  session with the very helpful and informative staff at Hughes had us excited to get the project started.  We also did some online research, which included looking at many photos and visiting some "How to" sites.  Last but not least we took a couple waterfall specific hikes to check out the real thing.

What is the style of the pond?
Natural Waterfall I guess?  I tried my hardest to envision a small waterfall and pond we would see on a beautiful Oregon hiking trail.  The waterfall is about 4' tall and 2.5' wide.  It drops into a 6' X 3.5' pond that is 2.5' deep.  It also has a plant shelf about 16 inches down.  This is a must!

What was the main purpose of your feature?

Our backyard was missing a good focal point.  This was unacceptable since we love spending time outdoors.  It also helped produce a more tranquil environment for enjoying a good glass of wine on our patio.  The sound turned out perfect.  Not so loud as to disrupt a good conversation, but loud enough to hear from our adjacent master bedroom with our windows open.  Helps us sleep like babies!  Although usually disappointing when I realize I am not next to a fly fishing stream when I wake and in fact have to go to work!

Did you do a filter, UV light, etc?
I added on a Tetra filter with UV about 6 weeks post production.  The pond was getting quite a bit of early afternoon sunshine which seemed to make the water a bit murky.  The addition of a beautiful water lily and prolific water hyacinth seemed to help a bit, but the tetra filter really made the difference.  Crystal clear water in 2 days and ever since!

What was the most enjoyable part of the building process?
Creating backyard art and seeing it come to life.  It was so cool to see it from start to finish, especially when it turned out how we envisioned it!  My wife did a fantastic job picking out different moss and plant varieties that really compliment the pond and one another.  She has a bit of a "green thumb".  Thank goodness for that!  It was such a fun project to work on together.

What was the most difficult part of the building process?
Lugging and rolling large boulders to the building site was no small task.  Unfortunately our small side yard would not allow us to back the truck to the site.  A close second was strategically draping and folding the thick pond liner into position.  Definitely a two person job!  I took it on by myself, which proved to be very difficult.

How long did it take?
It took us a little over one month.  I was lucky to have a friend with lots of pond knowledge help me out in a few crucial spots.  Thanks Dan!  It was so much fun once I got started, I just couldn't stop.  I did most of the work on weekends and weeknights as time and weather allowed.

What mistakes did you make?
I should have added a drainage system in the beginning.  Even though the pond is fairly small it can fill up rather quickly when the rain hits.  Still need to ask the experts at Hughes about the easiest way to accomplish that after the fact.  To be continued...

Would you do it again?
In a heartbeat!  We love our pond!  Have recently made it home to a koi and two goldfish and they seem to love it too.

Conclusion:
My wife and I have done numerous home improvement projects since purchasing in 2003.  When we sat down to think about which of these have had the greatest impact on our happiness and quality of life, we both agree that this project ranks at the top.  So what are you waiting for?  It's time to be creative and see what a water feature can add to your life!

Happy Gardening,

Jon & Debbie Russell

Come Visit Tiama over her pond at the Yard, Garden & Patio

Display Garden Created by Hughes Water Gardens and "Tiama" created by Laurel Hagner

Tiama

The Fairy Glen

Deep in the woods is a magical place where the fairies love to play. Here, an ink black pool mirrors the beauty of white birch bark  and red and gold dogwood stems. The queen of the fairies swoops low and delights in her reflection. Come and spend a while relaxing  in this tranquil setting.

"Tiama" was conceived and created by artist Laurel Marie Hagner.
Inspired by Lalique, the great Art Nouveau jeweler and glass artist of the late 1800's, Laurel felt a larger than life mystical representation was the only way to pay homage to such an era of creativity and ideals.  Laurel's more major works frequently depict humans crossed with winged creatures.  The result is stimulating, thought provoking, and emulates spiritual roots we may only experience in our dreams.

Profile:
Laurel Marie Hagner is the owner and sole designer for Glassometry Studios. She has her BFA in sculpture and has studied and taught art glass at several institutions within the U.S. as well as in Italy. Her work can be found nationally spanning public and private sectors. Through the studio glass and metal sculpture and custom artwork are created.  This year Glassometry Studios will move into a new 8000 sq ft facility.  The public will be able enjoy a diverse range of works in the gallery space, glass blowing demos, and a sculpture garden, all accompanied by a beautiful view of Mt Adams, located in stunning Hood River, OR.  Her work can be viewed online at www.glassometry.com
Please plan to visit us on your next trip through the Hood River Valley.
