UV Lights and Green Water
Are you tired of green water and using chemical after chemical to combat algae? Ultraviolet (UV) lights are great for treating green water and reducing pond maintenance!
UVs are generally easy to install and very energy efficient.
Two factors to consider when choosing a UV light are the size of your pond and the water flow rate the UV manufacturer recommends.
These units should operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the warmer seasons. The bulb should be replaced yearly. Though the bulb will appear to be working,it will become less efficient with time.
Winterizing is easy - just remove the unit and place it in your garage or shed until late March. Keep in mind UV lights are great for treating green water algae but are unfortunately not effective for string algae.
Hughes has a great selection of lights on hand and a great staff to help you choose the right one for your needs.

Customers are Going Pondless!
Disappearing Waterfalls and Creeks Hughes Water Gardens has found that many of our customers are going pondless. Instead of building a traditional waterfall or creek flowing into a pond they are opting to build a disappearing feature, where the water flows into a bed of stones at the base. Hidden under the stones are sturdy grates that cover an underground reservoir, which holds the water needed for the waterfall.
There are many benefits to a pondless water feature. Besides being a very attractive feature with all the visual beauty and babbling sounds of traditional waterfalls or streams, it is safer for small children and pets since the only exposed water is the waterfall itself, and the reservoir is covered by a protective grate that can support the weight of a child. In addition because the main body of water is protected from the sun and falling leaves, algae problems and mucky maintenance are reduced to a minimum.
Tips for your pondless waterfall or creek:
- The volume of your reservoir must hold at least twice the volume of water required to fill the waterfall or creek.
- To calculate the volumes use the following instructions.
Multiply the length by the width of your water course by 0.25 and then by 7.5 and you will have the volume of water needed to run the system. Remember you will need to double this volume for your reservoir. Multiply the Length x Width x Depth of reservoir x 7.5 and you will have the volume in gallons of your reservoir. - All pumps need some maintenance. Therefore it is very important to make an access area (a hatch in your grate) for your pump.
- Use protective material under and over your liner, especially if you are filling the reservoir with river rock or using cinderblocks under your grates.
- Make the reservoir wide enough to handle any splash caused by the waterfall or creek. A splashing water feature will empty your reservoir faster than you would think.

Artist Focus |
About the Artist M.J. Anderson
I am an artist dealing with personal, social and political themes. I carve stone because I feel it is the least artificial of art forms and the most enduring to our humanity. While classical imagery of the figure is predominantly from a male perspective, my work is often that of a woman carving the story of woman in the first person. Much of my figurative sculpture focuses on an unapologetic pose, front on and present, a portrait of woman as participant in the viewing of herself.
Instead of trying to carve figures and images -- whether realistic or abstract, I try to carve what it feels like to be human, to convey the unspoken emotions of our being here, to create an image of the intangible.
M.J. Anderson's work is currently at Hughes Water Gardens

Susan Schenk: Collage artist bio/statement
I discovered that collage is a wonderful way to wake up the sleeping artist within. Anyone who can rip paper can make a collage. The challenge is to see that collages are unique individual expressions, just like the artists are. I am exploring a range of subjects without a political agenda, welcoming the technical challenge of making realistic renderings from recycled materials.
I enjoy making something attractive from discards, appropriating images and putting them together in intriguing ways. My goal as an artist is to let my work bring joy to the viewer. Like any artist, I am especially thrilled when my work calls to a viewer to come closer and spend some time engaged in the piece. While my pictorial collages are best viewed from a distance, a close up inspection can reveal a very different piece of art. Susan Schenk [email protected]
Susan Schenk work is currently at Hughes Water Gardens.
Susan will also do a demonstration during the festival with limited material available for people to join in Saturday July 25 from 2 to 3:30.
