Grief
How do we begin to move through it?

There are seven stages of grieving. I have my own interpretation of each.

 First Stage..Shock/Denial
This varies depending upon the level of shock and or trauma. With the shock often comes some form of denial or disbelief. Almost like you may be despondent.

Second Stage..
Guilt/Emotional, Mental, Physical Pain
During this stage, the individual begins to feel the pain that surrounds their grief. This can be felt on all levels...mind, body and spirit. Many become filled with guilt and the burden of blaming themselves in some way.

Third Stage..
Anger/Bargaining
You may suddenly begin to feel angry with the person you have lost or even lash out at other loved ones. Many people also bargain...as if to say..."if you bring them back, I promise not to continue this behavior".

 Fourth Stage..Depression and Reflection
This is when the reality of the loss begins to settle in and many experience depressive symptoms and typically pull away from others. There is a great deal of reflection during this stage that is needed in order to move through the grief and begin to process it. This also varies depending upon the person and their situation.

Fifth Stage..The light at the end of the tunnel
Gradually, as time passes, you begin to adjust to your loss. Life slowly returns to normal and you begin to transition into the new routines of daily life.

Sixth Stage..Rebuilding Your Life
In this stage you start to make important decisions without your loved one. You begin to gain your sense of personal power again and get back to living your life.

Seventh Stage..Acceptance
During this stage you know the importance of accepting the loss and make strides toward this goal. This may not mean that you are completely happy, but there are moments of happiness and hope is alive again.

There is no right or wrong way to experience grief. We are all so unique and each of us will grieve in our own way. Some will go through each stage like a textbook, others will skip steps and or go out of order. While some will stay stuck in one stage for an extended period of time. Be gentle with yourself and give yourself permission to FEEL your pain no matter what you are grieving.

Thought of the month

Nonhuman primates also grieve the loss of others. Gana, a captive gorilla, clearly grieved the loss of her infant and the image of her carrying her dead baby was shown around the world. Jane Goodall observed Flint, a young chimpanzee, withdraw from his group, stop eating, and die of a broken heart after the death of his mother, Flo. Here is Goodall's description from her book Through a Window:

"Never shall I forget watching as, three days after Flo's death, Flint climbed slowly into a tall tree near the stream. He walked along one of the branches, then stopped and stood motionless, staring down at an empty nest. After about two minutes he turned away and, with the movements of an old man, climbed down, walked a few steps, then lay, wide eyes staring ahead. The nest was one which he and Flo had shared a short while before Flo died. . . . in the presence of his big brother [Figan], [Flint] had seemed to shake off a little of his depression. But then he suddenly left the group and raced back to the place where Flo had died and there sank into ever deeper depression. . . . Flint became increasingly lethargic, refused food and, with his immune system thus weakened, fell sick. The last time I saw him alive, he was hollow-eyed, gaunt and utterly depressed, huddled in the vegetation close to where Flo had died. . . . the last short journey he made, pausing to rest every few feet, was to the very place where Flo's body had lain. There he stayed for several hours, sometimes staring and staring into the water. He struggled on a little further, then curled up- and never moved again."

 Inspiring Reading

Vanessa shares how her Intuitive Reading impacted her life

I am in the middle of going through hard and first time "life lessons" in my business and personal life surrounding themes of betrayal. I got kicked down by several major issues and because it happened for the first time I have been confused on how to pick myself up, wipe myself off, address the problems and people and move forward. I didn't think I was capable of getting up and fighting this fight. When I sit in these "holding patterns" of not feeling capable, I get further from my own truth and my intuition gets blurred, I can't move with confidence or strength. Which leads to a spiral. In the past, I would tend to spiral for a long time in this chaotic spot and not sleep, not eat and over work myself to over compensate for failure. Not anymore, for the past year when I get to this spot of "confusion and lack of confidence" I get a reading from Julianna for guidance. It never ceases to absolutely astonish me by her readings. I read it through for the first time and it brings tears of joy and relief. It is so clear in the readings what I need to do and I realize I had the power and options in front of me (they just got lost). Once I re-read the reading for the second and third time I immediately get my power back, which brings this feeling of strength and confidence to pick myself up and GO! It brings a sense of relief that I am not alone in this journey and my path begins to flow. I can breathe again. Thank you Julianna for saving my life every time. That's how I feel about your power, it saves me from spiraling into a lonely place. You give me my intuition mojo back. I print your readings out and pin them on my mirror until I get through the "chapter" entirely. Love you, earth angel!

Have you heard of Myopractics? It is one of my favorite types of body work!

Myopractics is the the art of gentle dynamic mobilization of joints and manipulation of soft tissue to bring about a state of balance and harmony in the bodies biomechanical system. The guiding principal in Myopractics is that life is motion and once this motion becomes restricted the end result is limited movement, tension and pain.

Myopractics works on these restrictions by releasing muscular and fascial tension and mobilizing the joints to restore balance.

Myopractics is unique in that it treats the structural and muscular systems simultaneously unlike most other modalities which focus on one or the other. These two systems are completely interdependent and treating them in unison gives a more comprehensive and permanent relief from pain and tension.

Myopractics main focus is on balancing the pelvis as this is the foundation and center of gravity of the body. An imbalance in the pelvis can cause problems in all areas from feet, knees, low back, neck, shoulders, etc. Once the pelvis and the core postural muscles are balanced the other problem areas can then be addressed e.g. low back, neck, shoulder, etc. Releasing these restrictions and restoring balance eliminates pain and tension leading to greater range of motion, improved flexibility and a heightened state of well being. The client remains dressed during the treatment. Loose fitting, comfortable clothes are best.

At RENEW THERAPEUTICS, Noel McDonnell, LMT has been in practice in Scottsdale since 1995 and has specialized in Myopractics since 1999. If you have any questions or would like to book an appointment, please contact Noel at

Tender, well-intentioned little guide to learning to live with deep loss. A good book to read early on when you have precious little energy to cope with what you are going through.
