New Meet Next Year in Auburn

We are delighted to announce a new national meet and collaboration with Auctions America with the presentation of the Central Division Spring Meet, May 9-11, 2013 in Auburn, Indiana.

Held onsite at the historic Auburn Auction Park and coinciding with Auctions

America's Auburn Spring Collector Car weekend, the new AACA spring meet will expand the weekend program with the addition of a judged car show, judging school and training, apprentice program, members' round table discussion, various seminars and other social events.

"It is very exciting for AACA to partner with Auctions America to bring a national AACA meet to Auburn.  Both of our organizations have been at the forefront of promoting the collectible vehicle hobby and together we will be able to offer a spectacular event to our members and the hobby," says AACA Executive Director Steve Moskowitz.  "Our members are going to be thrilled to not only attend a national car show but to be there for Auctions America's great spring auction."

Donnie Gould, President, Auctions America adds, "The AACA is one of the world's most respected automotive associations and we are delighted to be partnering with them and to welcome them to Auburn for our Spring event. The new AACA meet adds an exciting new dimension to our Spring program as we work to put Auburn back on the map as the world's classic car capital, celebrate the hobby and create a truly unforgettable event experience for motoring enthusiasts. As a lifelong member of the AACA, I'm personally thrilled about this new partnership and look forward to working with the AACA team."

Planning for the new AACA Spring event is currently underway with organizers anticipating more than 500 cars will participate in the meet. They also plan to take full advantage of all the wonderful automotive themed attractions in the Auburn area, including the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, National Auto and Truck Museum, Early Ford V8 Foundation and Museum, and the World War II Victory Museum as they work to showcase the area and craft an ultimate automotive weekend for AACA members.

If you are going to the Labor Day Auction in Auburn this week stop by the AACA booth!  The club will be in the main auction building Wednesday through Sunday. Bring us some new members!  We need to sign up a large number of new members at this big event.  If you want to volunteer some time please offer to do so.  Chris Ritter and Steve Moskowitz will be manning the space and rumor has it that a director or two and West Peterson will make an appearance!

Hershey, the Experience

By Member Stan Sipko

Last year just as in the prior few years, myself and Walter Kreig had gone to the greatest motor vehicle spectacle called Fall Hershey. As usual there is so much to see and do and to cover it all you definitely need days to walk through the thousands of vendors and see all the parts and items for sale. I was lucky enough to have some capital to look to see if I could find a car in my price range that appealed to me. Now for those of you that have gone there before, you know exactly what I mean when I say "if you cant find it at Hershey you probably won't find it anywhere". So after Walter and myself went wondering through the vendors and looked at several Model T Touring cars we decided to look in the car corral and see what gems it had to offer. As we started walking through there were a list of cars that drew my attention: a 1955 Packard 400, 1979 Chevy Camaro Z28, 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire, then we came across a 1970 Chevy C-10 from Florida that was mostly original. I was on that like ants on a piece of candy! It was at the end of the day so the owner was ready to leave for the day and go back to his hotel so I started to look the truck over and made an offer on it. The owner told me his bottom line and I said that I would think about it and took his number.

This era trucks brings back some memories from my younger days as club member Bernie Boback had a gold C-10 when I was in school, and my friend Mark had a blue 69 that had cherry bombs on it that were turned backwards and would shoot out flames when he downshifted. I think I drove Walter nuts for a little while because as soon as we got back to the camper I broke out the computer and started checking the price guide to see how much they valued the truck. Needless to say the price he was looking was not outrageous but more then I felt I should pay and still come out on top. The next day I continued to the beginning of the corral as Walter was going to catch up and we were going to meet club member Jerry Weber by a Nash Metropolitan that I had seen. My father had wanted one of these cars for years and years so once I got there I checked the car out and spoke to the owner. Both Jerry and Walter then arrived just in time to hold my backpack while I took the car for a spin with the owner. As we were cruising the parking lot I made my offer and the owner accepted. We parked the car there and the transaction was made. Not my first choice of cars but I figured my father would like it. We then proceeded to walk through the corral as Jerry picked cars that interested him and we stopped and looked at them giving our two cents of the cars to Jerry. We then came to a 1940 Dodge 9 passenger sedan that caught Jerry's eye. We checked the car over inside outside and underneath. It was a beauty and as I commented before Jerry was on it like ants on a piece of candy! Jerry and the owner went back and forth and the deal was made.

We then told Walter it was his turn but because of lack of garage space this wasn't his year. I always tell people that Hershey is not just a car show it is an experience!

School Days

By Member Rick Lindner

Our local Model A Ford Club in Columbus, Ohio has been collaborating with JC Sommer Elementary School for the last few years to show Model T and Model A Ford cars to them. We worked with the 5th grade class of the school as they had been studying Henry Ford and his assembly line.  We had seven Fords show up in past years and had a very good time. I drove my 1915 Model T and asked for ten "volunteers" to whom I let pick a job from my job jar. They may have had to check the oil, gas, adjust the spark, or some other task. They all were very interested in the demonstration and the teachers were thrilled also. To teach is one thing, to be able to see, touch, and learn from the actual car is something else indeed. We received a very nice packet of "Thank You" letters from the class - and did it again this year.

AACA Library

A Very Special, Special Collection

While rooting through the attic or basement, have you ever stumbled upon a hidden treasure?  On top of the AACA Library's extensive collection of reference books and sales literature, we also house special collections from ten different organizations-gems which were originally tucked away in our basement.  To make these materials more accessible they were transferred to the main floor in the space formerly occupied by our collection of periodicals.

On July 21st and 22nd, the staff was accompanied by fine folks from the Friends of the Library in moving our periodicals to the basement.  With more than 40,000 periodicals and around 1,800 publication titles, this was certainly no easy task!  A special thanks goes out to those who volunteered their time, blood, sweat and tears.  Their positive attitudes and hard work helped make this move possible.

That all of our magazines are now downstairs is appropriate, since we left behind one special collection, the Society of Automotive Historians' (www.autohistory.org) Dunwoodie Archives, which utilizes them exclusively.  Sixty-four drawers spread amongst sixteen filing cabinets contain countless hours of valuable research on everything from cars, parts and accessories to information on the AACA and women in the automobile industry.  A stickler for detail, nothing was considered too obscure, not even Chinese cars built in the late 1950s.

Thousands of different marques and more than one hundred sixty coachbuilders are represented in the collection, each with a file or set of files arranged by year.  Along with letters of correspondence and copies of articles, each file contains its own individual periodical index.  Whether he was paging through a 1907 issue of the Horseless Age or the latest copy of Automobile Quarterly, Dunwoodie took it upon himself to note his findings in the appropriate index, jotting down the publication title, date, page number and, sometimes, the subject matter.

In 1988, the Society of Automotive Historians bestowed upon Dunwoodie the Friend of Automotive History award which, according to the organization, "recognizes an individual who has made a profound individual contribution to the automotive history community..."  And what a contribution it has been!  For example, let's say you have an interest in the Dragon Automobile Company, which was only in operation between 1906 and 1908.  Imagine the tremendous amount of time needed to spend paging through every period automotive magazine, hoping to catch a glimpse of a Dragon car.  Yet, a brief scan through the Dunwoodie Dragon reveals, not one, but more than fifty different references!

Much of Dunwoodie's research was carried out under his tenure at the infamous Harrah's Automobile Collection in Reno, Nevada, owned by casino mogul Bill Harrah.  At one point, Dunwoodie was in charge of acquiring new cars for the museum as a purchasing agent.  With Harrah's collection of periodicals at his fingertips, he also served as the museum's Chief of Research.

Following Harrah's death in 1978, Dunwoodie continued doing what he loved, albeit independently as a free-lance researcher.  Later, he played an important role as a consultant for the Standard Catalog of American Cars: 1805-1942, first published in 1985.  In the acknowledgements to the second edition, editor Beverly Rae Kimes expressed her gratitude to Dunwoodie for updating her "weekly" on his latest discoveries.

After Ralph Dunwoodie himself passed away in 2003, his archives were donated to the Society of Automotive Historians, of which he was a founding member.  In 2005, the AACA Library and Research Center was fortunate enough to be chosen by said organization as a custodian of the collection.  While not accessible online, the archives are available for research requests, whether you are writing an article or just interested in what the press had to say about your favorite car.

The Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805-1942:

With information on production numbers, factory pricing, specifications and options for more than 5,000 automobiles the Standard Catalog has remained a staple here at the Library.  Interested in owning the masterpiece which Ralph Dunwoodie helped create?  If so, you'll be happy to know it's available for purchase through the AACA!

eBay Auctions and Book Sales:

In order to help raise money for the library, we will be auctioning off fifty books this month, including several vintage and antique pieces.  These auctions will end on Sunday, September 2nd at 9:30 PM Eastern Standard Time, so be sure to have you "clicker" finger ready! Auction Link Here.

The Library is also continually adding factory photographs to our eBay store. You can purchase them directly from us through our eBay store or by email or phone. eBay store link here. Only a small sampling of photographs are in our eBay store, so be sure to check out the complete list of photographs we have online. Master list of photos here.

Trivia Answer

1. This major disaster, which occurred in 1906, would become a tremendous opportunity for the truck industry, as truck capabilities were tested and not proved wanting. The San Francisco earthquake. Walter White organized a caravan of White trucks in Los Angeles. Aid and relief were rushed to the disaster and the trucks were instrumental in the clean-up.

2.  When did state highway departments first use trucks to remove snow from roads? 1922. During that winter, trucks equipped with snow-removal gear opened 27,096 miles of snow-covered highways from the Midwest to the East Coast.

3.  When was the "camel back" or cab-over-engine (cabover) introduced? Several manufacturers introduced the camel back, as it was then called in 1934 - Autocar, Mack, Sterling, and Hendrickson. In a technical sense, these were not the first cabovers. Early trucks also had the motor under the driver. Thus, 1934 was a comeback for the style. This time its purpose was to shorten truck wheelbase and to address the problem of axle load restrictions. The trend became more pronounced in 1938 when Dodge, Chevrolet, GMC and Ford introduced their own cabovers.
