Oldest Running Car in the World Sells for $4.62 million! |
|

The oldest running motor car in the world, an
1884 De Dion Bouton Et Trepardoux Dos-A-Dos Steam Runabout, topped sales at the Hershey auction last week, held on Thursday, October 6 and Friday, October 7 in conjunction with the AACA Eastern Division Fall Meet. With standing room only at the Hershey Lodge, the 1884 De Dion steamed across the auction stage to the delight of the packed house. Those in attendance or viewing the auction online were treated to a good old-fashioned bidding war, which drove the price up to double the pre-auction estimate! Ultimately it sold for $4.62M, setting a new world record for an early motor car sold at auction.
The sale also featured the 1936 Packard Super 8 Seven-Passenger Phaeton, originally built for the White House Garage and offered from the distinguished collection of David Kane, with proceeds benefiting the Packard Proving Grounds in Michigan. Beautifully presented, the Packard realized a final sales price of $159,500, purchased by well-known collector car dealer Mark Hyman, who was proud to also lend his support to this important institution in the hobby.
Overall, 84% of the cars offered were sold for total sales of over $10M, and bidders hailed from 16 different countries, from Europe and the Middle East to China and Australia.
Full sale results can be found online at www.rmauctions.com |

84th Birthday at Hershey
By Member Wilda Ishmael
We are Pete and Wilda Ishmael from Dayton Ohio. We just arrived home from the AACA Hershey Car Show, having attended for 55 years, not missing a year. Pete has restored 2 cars since he retired in the early 90's. It took him 6 years to restore the cars. He worked with my cousin Richard Stockton of Urbana, Ohio, a long time member of the AACA. They worked 2 days a week, Monday and Wednesday, each working on their own car, helping each other. The first car Pete completed was a 1926 Ford Model T Roadster. He did everything but the upholstery and cloth top. His 2nd car is a 1940 4 door Mercury convertible. He did all of it except the upholstery, top and exterior painting. He jokes that if he had done the Mercury first, he may not have made it to the Model T. The Mercury was a lot more car. His Mercury has received awards, EFV8 Dearborn through Emeritis. We are members of the Ohio Regional Group 141. We meet many of our members every year at Hershey. We have celebrated Pete's 83rd and 84th birthday at Hershey, cake and all. We always make our motel reservations for the next year. This year is over and we are already looking forward to next year--If the Good Lord is Willing and Creek don't rise.

The Story of Our Graham
By Member Robert Feldes
The year, 1988 and my wife and I were invited to the Graham Owners Club International meet held in Atlanta, Georgia. Meeting the friendly members of the Graham Owners Club International and seeing the beautiful cars was a wonderful experience. I didn't own a an antique automobile yet, but I had a magazine that was two months old that had a 1940 Graham for sale that I had my eye on. The problem being the fact that it was on the other side of the country. My neighbor was the one who invited us to the meet and he owns a 1941 Graham and has been a member of the GOCI for many years. He contacted a member at the location and he did all the ground work for me including arrangement to have it shipped home. It was a basket case and in nine months I had it assembled, painted and running. I got the car in August of 1988 and drove it to the GOCI meet in Williamsburg, VA in June of 1989. Not complete but we drove it and over the next several years found the missing pieces with the help of club members. In 2004, with the paint showing wear, it was time to re-restore it. This time it took two years and in 2006 it was back on the road. This year will be my 24th GOCI meet and will be driving the Graham to the annual meet. I have driven the car over 40,000 miles over the years and still enjoy the ride. I am also the newsletter editor for our local AACA chapter and doing an eight page newsletter monthly. I am also the editor for the Dixieland Region of the GOCI doing an eight page newsletter quarterly. I am currently finishing a restoration on a Mullins trailer for a Graham member and working on a 1958 Triumph TR-3A for my brother.
With the passing of my wife in 2008 I have slowed down due to time restraints of dealing with other matters. We shared many great Graham meets and have traveled throughout the USA and have met many great people involved in the antique car hobby. |

History of our 1911 Warren-Detroit 30 11C Five Passenger Touring
By Members Roger & Linda Rodine
June 20, 1910- A Warren-Detroit 1930 was driven by Scot Miller, he won a five mile event with a winning time of 6:55 minutes and received a silver cup trophy from the QuakerCity Motor Club in Point Breeze, Philadelphia, PA. That trophy is now with our 1911 Warren-Detroit. The 1911 Warren-Detroit in its 100 year history has had only five owners.
1911 to 1948- Mr. Brundage of North East, Detroit. Purchased the Warren New for $1,325.00
1948 to 1949- Richard Teague of General Motors and American Motor Designer. At that time he paid $250.00 for the Warren.
1949 to 1976- Bernard J Pollard of Detroit. Bernard collected hundreds of cars before and during World War II to save them from the scrap iron drives to make ammunition. Bernard stacked them on their ends against each other to save space for more vehicles; he also sprayed them with used crank case oil to preserve them. At that time he paid $300.00 for the Warren.
1976 to 1987- David Stewart of Longview, Texas. He purchased the Warren at the Pollard Auction for $5,000.00.
He also restored the Warren and won the Antique Automobile Club of America Senior Award Class 13B in 1980.
1987 to Present Roger and Linda Rodine of Denver, Colorado. Purchased the Warren for $22,500.00.
1991 & 1992- The Warren went to Scottsbluff, NE. To participate in the Sugar Valley Rally. The Warren was presented with a cash award for winning one leg of the race and also won the "Peoples Choice Award" that included a hand tooled brass hammer with a hand crafted wood box to keep it in.
May 13-15, 2011- The Warren ran at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis, IN. "100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 Celebration of Automobiles." |

Library During Fall Meet
We are happy to report that the AACA Library & Research Center had a tremendously successful literature auction and Fall Meet.
The Fall Meet got off to a great start on Monday with our biennial literature auction where bidders were able to snag pre-war literature, MoToR annuals, owner's manuals, and much more. The auction earned nearly $25,000 - our second-best auction to date! Auctioneer Dave Berg was kind enough to donate his voice to the event and didn't even take one break!
During the remainder of the week volunteers spread the word about the library and sold used automotive books and advertisements in our flea market tent while library staff and volunteers helped well over a hundred visitors locate research material and provide over 2,000 photocopies! Needless to say we were tired by the end of the week. In case you were wondering, the visitor who traveled the longest distance had to be even more tired as they came see us all the way from Australia.
The library is tremendously grateful for the help that our library committee, friends, and volunteers provided. We would not be as successful without help so, publicly, we want to say THANK YOU!

Oh Deer!
This past week the AACA Library had an unexpected visitor when a local deer crashed through the window and invaded the library! After knocking down some boxes and filing cabinets the deer escaped through the back door that we opened. Never a dull moment at the AACA Headquarters!
