1911 MAXWELL MODEL GA
By Member Thomas W. Reese
This car was purchased new in Cooperstown, ND, by Adolph Kjelson, a well to do wheat farmer, reputedly with the profits from but one year's harvest from his 3 quarter sections of wheat land. Adolph was from nearby Sutton, North Dakota, which town was small enough to have disappeared from road maps by 1927. The Maxwell was one of the first cars in the area, and a source of pride to the Kjelson household, comprised of Adolph, Isabelle, his second wife, some years his junior and her children.
The car was seldom driven, and was stored between trips in a garage, where the tires were covered against the light, and jacked up to remove the load from them. When later cars were purchased, the Maxwell was retained for extraordinary family uses. A Kjelson step daughter, Iva, was a school teacher. During the late teens, she was permitted to drive the Maxwell to and from her teaching job, along with a cousin, Calma Hoffard, who survived when I first wrote the article, who provided much of this information.

Upon the death of Adolph, who preceded Belle in death by some years, the car was stored away, eventually finding its way to MacIntosh, Minnesota, through a relative who was a Chrysler dealer. Evidently, something was said about the widow getting a new Chrysler for it, but this never materialized. It finally was purchased by the succeeding Chrysler dealer in MacIntosh. It sat in his show room on and off for the next 18 years. Its existence was well known to many car club members, who also knew or thought they knew that it couldn't be bought. I arrived on the scene on the day that it could be bought, and I proceeded to do so.
The car has very low mileage and is nearly all-original. It had been repainted once, many years ago, but the original striping is clearly visible everywhere. When purchased it still had mounted one all white smooth tire, which had to date back prior to 1915, and could even be an original, but I can't prove that. I ran the tire some 450 miles before dismounting it for preservation. I did considerable research on the tire. It is a Congress trademark, which was a house brand of the E. C. McGraw Tire & Rubber Company of East Palestine, Ohio. It is felt to be the oldest functional pneumatic tire in the United States. The upholstery is original as are the running and floor boards, the chassis paint and fittings, the engine components and the brass. The Presto-Lite tank was last filled in 1915 and still has ample gas in it to run the headlights. The car received one of the first HPOF (Historical Preservation of Original Features) awards from AACA
The engine smoked lots and lost power badly on hills. Disassembly disclosed much rust on the cam lobes and valves, and a general lack of tension in the rings. The bearings were perfect. An overhaul returned the engine to vitality and ended the smoking.
The top was not original, and was ratty looking. A new top and side curtains were installed, so that the car could be driven in all kinds of Minnesota weather. Great pains were taken to exactly duplicate the Westchester top that would have been an original equipment accessory. (Early pictures disclosed that the car came without a top. Interviews stated that the top was purchased later. Perhaps the wheat crop wasn't that good!)
The car is a good cruiser and is comfortable and fun to drive. It completed the 600 mile 1990 AACA Reliability the 2004 Maxwell Centennial Tours and many local tours without incident. It is too nice to restore.

Accessing Your Library During Fall Meet
The Fall Meet is just days away; are you excited yet? For many AACA members the Fall Meet is the only opportunity they have to personally visit the library collection. Each October hundreds of guests file through our doors to view sales literature, advertisements, shop manuals, parts lists and, of course, books. If you plan to visit us this year observing the following guidelines will ensure a smooth visit.
- Leave all of your bags, briefcases, and boxes in your car. Yes ladies, that includes your purse. The reason for this restriction is simple; we don't any pieces of our collection accidentally falling into your bag and leaving the library.
- Please bring your driver's license, state-issued ID or something of value. We will hold on to your card while you hold on to our material. When you are finished with your research we will swap again.
- For obvious reasons we do not allow food or drink in the library.
- We offer black & white photocopies for $0.30/page, color copies for $0.50/page, and digital scans for $1.00/page. If we are exceptionally busy during your visit and unable to make copies immediately, we will mail your copies to you at a later date.
- Remember that this is your library! Be inquisitive. Keep in mind that there are many more pieces in our collection than you see from our reading room. Ask questions and enjoy the library.
Please visit the discussion on the AACA Forum here for more information
about the Library Auction during Meet Week.
We hope to see you at least once during your time in Hershey. We are located at 501 West Governor Road, Hershey, PA 17033 in the same building as AACA National Headquarters.

GAVEL LIFTS ON CHICAGO'S WORLD FAMOUS LEE ROY HARTUNG COLLECTION
The Lee Roy Hartung Collection | | | AUBURN, IN (September 2, 2011) - Auctions America by RM in partnership with RM Auctions announced today it will lift the gavel on one of the Chicago area's best known treasures, the famous Lee Roy Hartung Collection, during a multi-day sale in Glenview, Illinois, November 3 - 5, 2011.
Well-known to collectors around the world, the Hartung Collection was amassed over five decades by the late Mr. Lee Roy Hartung for display in his private museum. From motor cars to motorcycles, bicycles, license plates and other vintage memorabilia, the amazing collection is comprised of items Hartung acquired locally, many from within a 15-mile radius of his Glenview location.
Following his passing in May 2011, Hartung's impressive collection will be offered 'without reserve' in November, presenting a unique range of ownership opportunities for those looking to continue his amazing legacy. In fact, in Lee Roy's own words and sentiments, he always viewed himself as a caretaker to the items in his collection, and he anticipated its dispersal to appreciative collectors greatly.
"Lee Roy Hartung was the ultimate collector with an incredible passion for history and a remarkable eye for originality," says Rob Myers, Chairman & Founder, RM Auctions and Auctions America by RM.
"We are honored to have been entrusted with the sale of his vast collection. In terms of its originality and diversity, it is unmatched, presenting a true treasure chest and range of exclusive ownership opportunities for the savvy collector," Myers adds.
For the motoring enthusiast, the collection is highlighted by a wonderful series of highly-original motor cars, from a rare and exquisite BMW Veritas Convertible with a Spohn body to a thoroughbred Edwards that won two races in its class at Pebble Beach, as well as an amazing collection of Ford Model T, Model A and V-8 motor cars, many presented in all-original untouched condition.
Those with an affinity for classic two-wheelers will appreciate the collection's outstanding series of vintage motorcycles, including an all-original 1911 Pope, a 1912 Sears Twin and a time-warp 1913 Flying Merkel Twin, which with its original paint and lettering is believed to be one of the most original examples in existence. Beyond motorized vehicles, Hartung was also known for his avid love of bicycles, which like almost everything in the collection remain in time-warp, original condition. Highlights include a like-new 1934 Iver Johnson, an Elgin Bluebird and a Schwinn Aerocycle.
For the mechanical engineering enthusiast, the collection boasts a large assortment of NOS Ford parts, highlighted by Ford "Speed Equipment," including heads, carburetors and upgrade kits, many of which have never been used.
Rounding out the collection is an diverse assortment of other collectibles including: - an extensive collection of hit and miss engines - vintage outboard motors - vintage toys and antiques - aircraft engines - promotional models - automotive mascots and motometers - automotive badges and emblems - political buttons and ephemera - porcelain signs and advertising - typewriters and housewares - fire and law enforcement memorabilia, and - petroliana and gas pumps.
The Lee Roy Hartung Collection auction will be held onsite at the Hartung Museum in Glenview, Illinois November 3 - 5 with a two-day auction preview on November 1 - 2. Further information and event details will be posted online at www.auctionsamerica.com. |
