| Member Contribution | '58 Impala By Member Rick Labuda I traded for the Impala with Morrison Motors located in a Concord, NC. Mr. Jimmy Morrison purchased 6 low mileage pristine cars from another collector. At the time I was originally looking at his 1956 Super 88 2dr hdtp Olds, all original as well and the Impala. But at the time because of price I elected to go with the Olds. On the day Mr. Morrison was going to deliver the Olds, he called me to say that the Bendix failed and was going to order another one. At this point I felt someone was telling me to go with the Impala, which I did. So the Impala was delivered instead. This happened to be one of the best decisions I ever made when it came to trading cars.
My 1958 Impala is an all original car with currently only 22,688 miles. The car is driven to local shows. It is equipped with a 348 CI engine and 3 deuces, the color combination is Rio Red and Artic White, has a padded dash, Turbo Glide transmission, radio, clock, windshield washer and more. It is very similar to the 1958 Impala I had before joining the Army in 1962. Without any type of storage and because of my assignment toSoutheast Asia in 1963, I very reluctantly had to sell it. I have several pictures attesting to it's originality including one with a factory tag still on the bottom cushion as well as the original burlap, paint is all original as well as the interior. The car was meticulously maintained. Bumpers have never been re-chromed nor has any of the stainless been buffed out or any of the emblems replaced.
The 58 Impala has a interesting history. It was purchased new by Mr. L. A. Edwards (deceased) of Crawfordville, GA in 1958. According to his niece Mrs. Alice Thornton of Crawfordville, who he raised as a daughter, said he loved the car and seldom drove it but enjoyed driving the car to church and local functions. The car was garaged and had lots and lots of TLC. In 1975, he wanted to please his wife so he reluctantly traded his beloved Impala for a new 1975 Chevrolet Caprice. Within one week he returned to the dealership to repurchase his 1958 Impala because his wife was not pleased with their new Caprice, only to find that the dealership now wanted twice the amount they gave him in trade. He wasn't able to do it. Within the next week the car was purchased by a collector, whom I understand was Mr. Benny Bootle, past 1995 president of the Antique Automobile Club of America and a collector of automobiles. I have a copy of a South Carolina inspection receipt dated July 27, 1979 with Mr. Bootle's name on the receipt.

News from the Library and Research Center
Last year I had the opportunity to speak with the AACA Museum's large group of volunteers. Among many things, I talked about my approach to customer service. Simply put, I treat everyone the way I would want a stranger to treat my grandmother and we perform research as if we are researching something for our own use. This is just a continuation of a long history of quality customer service here at the library. Evidence of this came in the form of a mid-summer phone call from Mr. William Seuch of Norwalk, CT. During that call he stated that he wanted to donate his 1968 Chevrolet Impala to the library. It was his wish that the vehicle be sold to raise money for the library! He said he was donating the Impala because former librarian Kim Gardner had been so helpful in the past.
It should be nice to know that no matter who you are you will be getting the best service possible here at the library. It doesn't matter if you have a $1-million dollar classic car or a rusty project with a tree growing out of it. We do this not because we think you will donate something to us in the future, but because we take pride in the work we do and our reputation among library users.
The Impala will be sold on Ebay in December. Stay tuned to Speedster, the library's web & Facebook page, and future issues of Antique Automobile for more information. Most of all, thank you Mr. Seuch!!! |

| Message from the Executive Director | |
A serious mistake was made in the September/October issue of Antique Automobile. In the listing of candidates for the 2011 AACA election we neglected to include the picture and biography of Hulon McCraw. This election is unusual in that it has 12 members vying for 7 seats instead of the normal 11 candidates. Mr. McCraw, to his credit, will not allow us to make a mailing to all members but we hope you can reach your fellow region/chapter members with your newsletter or at meetings to point out this mistake on our part. Hulon's name is on the ballot, but there is no biography or picture in the magazine. As you can tell from his resume, Hulon has been an active part of the AACA national board for the past two terms and is deserving of everyone's consideration.
Thank you for your assistance.

1. Who was the first President of the United States to ride in an automobile?
- President McKinley in 1900. The momentum to integrate automobiles into official White House use would have to wait, however. McKinley was killed that year, and the next president, Theodore Roosevelt, would not part with his beloved horse. William Howard Taft made extensive use of the automobile during his campaign, and was able to hire a chauffeur with 13 years experience. During this presidency, in 1910, the White House officially adopted the automobile for presidential transportation.
More information on the Official Presidential Vehicles here.
2. Before the advent of drive-in gas station, where did one buy gasoline for the car?
- Local drugstores and hardware stores sold gasoline before the days of gas stations.
3. When was the first drive-in gas station opened?
- Shell Oil opened the first gas station in St. Louis in 1905. The first combination gas and service station opened in Pittsburgh in 1913.
4. Name that grill... 1937 Delage Aerosport Coupe
