Don't forget to forward SPEEDSTER to a potential member, it's a great way to introduce your AACA,
the premier resource and destination for the collectible vehicle hobby!

Forward this issue to a Friend

Board_MikeJones2AACA's 2009 President is Michael J. Jones of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania!

Many of you know Mike as the Chairman of our Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Our new first lady, Marcy Jones, has also been a fixture to many of you at the registration desk in Philly.  This great couple is well loved and respected in the hobby and we all wish them a very successful year at the helm.

In the May/June Antique Automobile issue, you will learn more about Mike and Marcy and the plans they have for AACA.  For now, we would like to mention Mike's theme for the year "Focusing on Our Future, Service Beyond Self".  In these few words, we all understand on how the AACA National Board will be directed and will work in the coming year.  Powerful words that hopefully will help us make AACA stronger and give us the ability to provide our members with the services they want.

Mike asked us to tell you to please stop him and say hello whenever you get the chance.  He really wants to hear your thoughts and ideas!

The 2009 AACA Annual Meeting ... an opportunity to share ideas!
Thursday, February 12 ~ Saturday, February 14, 2009

2009 Annual Mtg YouthSeminar
AACA members, friends and supporters made historic Philadelphia their home over the Valentine's Day weekend!

Attendees eagerly participated in the wide variety of interesting and fun activities offered, including the Lady's Breakfast, Trade Show Exhibits, AACA Museum Auction, AACA Seminars, Philadelphia City of Brotherly Love Trolley Tours, Social Events and Outings, and the fabulous year-end AACA National Awards Reception and Banquet. Congratulations to all the 2008 National Award recipients presented at the 2009 Annual Meeting!

Attendance was high at the seminars on Friday and Saturday, providing everyone with a great chance to learn, meet one another, collaborate and exchange ideas!
Pictured above, at the seminar, Engaging Youth in the Hobby, Charles Crane, Vice President Youth Advancement, presented a program that included a virtual roadmap of different ways to get kids of ALL ages excited and involved in the hobby.  From appointing a Youth Director in your Region/Chapter to a "moving show and tell" at your event or local school..... brainstorming was in full swing at this seminar!  Tom Cox, Assistant Vice President Membership Development stressed that, "we need to continue to get kids in and around our antique cars, encourage, invite and mentor their interest".  Youth, the future of AACA!

Another informative seminar, Women in the Hobby, lead by Fran Shore and June Crane, pictured below, provided the audience with a rich and entertaining history lesson highlighting women's involvement and long-standing contributions to the hobby.  Further adding to the fun, Fran Shore changed her dress from coveralls to period touring clothing as she moved through history and relayed many amusing personal anecdotes. Ever baked a manifold in your oven or put a part in the freezer? June Crane challenged the group to draw on their interests, imagination and creativity to find ways to have fun in the hobby and become actively involved ... joining the judging program, organizing a period fashion show, getting behind the wheel .. to name a few. Attendees came away with new insights and ideas!

2009 Annual Mtg Women Hobby Seminar
These two seminars represent only a quick snapshot of the over 50 seminars and learning sessions conducted at this year's annual meeting!

Members left Philadelphia energized ... not only by the exchange of useful information but also by the opportunity to come together and enjoy passion for our hobby!

If you weren't able to attend this year, be sure to join us in 2010!

A sincere THANK YOU to the Michael Jones, Chairman, and the ENTIRE 73rd Annual Meeting Committee for all their hard work in planning and conducting this wonderful AACA gathering in Philadelphia!   And, a special thank you to all the Seminar Presenters!
From our Members ......

A Grand Adventure for Sally Barnett       Sally Barnett_Alice Ramsey Crew
By Sally Barnett

On June 9, 2009 at 9:00 am I embark on a grand adventure. I will be part of the volunteer support crew for the centennial reenactment of the journey of Alice Ramsey in a 1909 Maxwell for New York to San Francisco.

Alice Ramsey, Crew 1909 SanFran
Rich Anderson of the Seattle Washington area has rebuilt a 1909 Maxwell for the trip.  His daughter, Emily, and three of her friends will be the basic driving crew. They will follow Alice's original route as closely as possible today.  Along the way, they will celebrate Alice's achievement and honor the contributions women have made to our history.

I will assist with logistical support and am very excited that I will have the privilege of telling Alice's story at Museums and other public stops.  To me, doing this is the answer to a dream as I get to combine many of my loves: Alice Ramsey, automotive history, women's history, storytelling and a Road Trip!

For more information and ways you can help, go to the website ~ www.aliceramsey.org.

To learn more about the original trip read Alice's Drive, a reprint of Alice's original title, Veil, Duster, and Tire Iron. For children I recommend Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure by Don Brown.

Editors Note:  Donning period clothing, Sally Barnett (pictured above) shared her excitement as she reviewed the details of her upcoming adventure during the "Women in the Hobby" seminar at the 2009 AACA Annual Meeting.  Enjoy your adventure Sally!

We encourage anecdotes, photos, short stories and information about our members and/or their vehicles that may be of interest to other AACA Members.
Headquarters Starting Grid...   Peggy Hoerner Picture

Meet Peggy Hoerner!
"Do what you love," a phase coined often, lived by a fortunate few... and Peggy counts herself as one of them!  Although Peggy retired last April from full-time employment, she has continued in a part-time capacity working in the AACA Library, devoting time to database entry for the online catalog, and generally assisting wherever needed at Headquarters. We are thrilled to draw on her over 24 years of experience.

Throughout her AACA career, Peggy has been responsible for administration of various judging programs and region/chapter affairs while at the same time always willing to wear many hats in an effort to serve you, our members.  She adds that, "the members are a joy to talk with, and truly values friendships developed over the years with members from across the country."

Peggy and her husband of 48 years, Allen, enjoy the hobby from behind the wheel.  Along with fellow AACA enthusiasts, they participate in tours driving either their 1979 Camero Rally Sport or the 1978 El Camino (with over 260,000 miles on the odometer!). These touring adventures have included visits to Georgia, North Carolina, Iowa, Long Island, Vermont, and Massachusetts!  Peggy and Allen are also very active in the AACA Pennsylvania Dutch Region and the Keystone Region of the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America.

A native Central Pennsylvanian, Peggy has 2 daughters, a son, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren!
So next time you find yourself in Hershey, take time to visit your Headquarters and Library & Research Center, and Meet the Crew!
